A scary thought no doubt, but even more scary would be this: I don't blame Allied soldiers for instinctively hitting the ground every time that thing opened up.
WinterH Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Hickok45, one of my favorite gun channels after forgotten weapons, inrangetv, and c&rsenal :). My impression of BAR has always been that of a pig though. Big and powerful but also kinda ungainly. What it has however, in my opinion, being inbetween a rifle and a machine gun, and can act as both to some degree. In that sense one may argue the Bren being similar, but I'd personally take the Bren over BAR anyday. Hummingbird Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 The magazine fed MG was obsolete before WW2 even started, the British & Americans didn't realize this before the war had begun. The Americans tried to patch solve the issue by modifying the M1919, but it remained too heavy & ungainly for the role. The result of this was that the average Allied infantry platoon often found itself outgunned when encountering a German platoon and both lacked any form of artillery, air or mechanized support. Fortunately for the Allies however such support was more often available to them than the German opposition.

They have a different role than the belt fed ones, but someone thought it is a good idea.
Los Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Regardless...The BAR was very popular with the troops.

Not really the same thing as the M27 is just an assault rifle modified to better cope with sustained fire, it's not a really a MG.
Hummingbird Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Regardless...The BAR was very popular with the troops. Sometimes, I've heard many a bad stories from vets about the weapon, most pertaining to the weight, low mag capacity & stupidly designed bipod.
WinterH Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 (edited) We may argue that BAR was kinda the same concept in a sense, it was maybe more of a precursor of SAW concept rather than what's usually called a universal mg or medium mg. It's just that intermediate calibers weren't quite around yet. Magazine fed "machine guns" indeed kept on existing in this concept way after war, RPD, RPK, RPK-74, machine gun versions of SA-80 and AUG and QBZ-95 can be considered examples of that. Some of these are still in service, and with militaries that aren't quite 3rd world armies at all. While not nearly as impressive in machine gun role as a MG-34 or MG-42, BAR was arguably more versatile for assaulting troops, as it could kinda sorta work as a rifle too. Also, since American squads typically had two BARs and like 6-8(?) semi auto M1 Garands, their suppressive firepower could potentially be as good as, may be even better than the German squad, depending on the context. Still, my impression of BAR has always been "neither fish, nor fowl". Too light, slow firing, and low magazine capacity for a machine gun, too heavy and ungainly for a rifle, too uncontrollable for an assault rifle/SMG replacement. Edit: well... just realized RPD is actually kinda belt fed, so shouldn't have included it in my examples above, but others still hold true :). Jhuss96 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 The BAR is one of my favorite weapons of the period, I wish I was independently wealthy enough to own one, I already have an M1 and 1903, it would fit into my collection nicely :) Intel i7-4790K 4GHz l 32 GB DDR3 l MSI 1080ti l Gigabyte 97ZX l TrackIR + DelanClip l TM Warthog HOTAS l CH Pedals AV-8B l AJS-37 l A-10A l A-10C l F-15C l F-16C l F-5E l F-14A/B l F-86F l F/A-18C l Hawk l M2000 l MiG 29 l NTTR l Persian Gulf l Su-27 l Su-33 l Su-25 l Supercarrier l L-39 l UH-1 l
Andy1966 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 The BAR was very effective in combat. Read Audie Murphey's bio To hell and Back. Been awhile since I read it but, he talked a lot about his bar man.. the problem with it was keeping it cool, 3 round bursts.. Hummingbird Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) Well it was better than no automatic weapon at all, and importantly it was very reliable which is something any soldier will appreciate. What I don't understand is why the US didnt experiment with more modern types in the prewar years. They put all their faith in the M1 providing the bulk of the platoon level firepower instead, which was quite a gamble, one which would turn out to bite them in the MTO & ETO. You hear about it all the time, but can't put it into context until you try to aim standing, unsupported. Schizwiz Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 I have this monster in 1:1 airsoft replica.Had fun with it during my dedicated airsoft time.It doesn't function anymore, but never really used it very much. The external state is very good. The weight is half of the real deal's weight. Can be great as an ornament to hang or put somewhere in your house. http://www.popularairsoft.com/files/images/vfc_aeg_BAR_WGCa.jpg Interested ?
