I dont Think they have ever said we will get the A model first. They have said that they will try to release both at the same time but if thats not possible, the B will come first.

Okay thanks for the clarification

Multicrew in this beast is going to be so much fun.

One question, was I hearing an RWR tone in that video? Watching on a phone with family blaring the TV in the background. Hard to make out.

You all aren't asking for the A with TF-30's are you? That would be crazy.

IKR, I don't get it either..... :wassat:

i guess they like compressor stalls....

I'm happy with the B model.

You don't like compressor stalls? WTH!

Next are you going to tell me that also don't like traffic jams, burned toast, or syphilis?

On a more serious note: This video is the perfect way to inaugurate the new Heatblur forum! :D

It was awesome.

Keep it coming and thank you for all the recent updates!

Hopefully some shots of USS Ranger on the horizon? :music_whistling:

As for this part:

It's not crazy, I am more excited about the F-14A than the F-14B (though I plan to love them both!).

The reasoning is simple:

The F-14A was the F-14. It was the only model for the first ~15 years of operations and continued to be roughly half of the F-14 fleet through 2001. To understand the F-14 you need to understand the F-14A IMHO.

Also, the F-14A was the model of the F-14's heyday. It was also the model of F-14 that I saw growing up. I want to know what it was like to fly her even of the F-14B performs better.

Lastly, my favorite parts of DCS and flight sims is the basic stick and rudder stuff. The F-14A offers endless enjoyment because those aspects are challenging, but rewarding. In addition the difficult low speed handling of the F-14A/B with AFCS (especially in the approach configuration), the finicky engines add another layer of challenge and interest to handling the aircraft. I like aircraft that are hard to fly and reward the investment learning them. The F-14A epitomizes this IMHO.

There are a very diverse set of interests in DCS and many people want different things, but these are mine and the F-14A fits them perfectly.

I see where your coming from. The Mig-21 is different and can be difficult to fly. It's Challenging higher approach speeds for landings etc. And I really enjoy that. If your a Tomcat fan then your going to love all its imperfections as well.

Two things:

1) The hud refresh rate still feels a bit too low. (Cobra has already addressed this issue)

2) The roll rate on the bird seems very excessive for such a big bird. Did she really roll that fast?

In any case, looking great. Keep em coming. It's my birthday next month. Im going to treat myself to a Heatblur module. :)

Excellent vid. Loving the multi-crew aspect of the F-14.

Any news on the LANTIRN integration? F-14B wouldn't be the same without it. :)

Not sure but in the combat scenes from Top Gun she has a good roll rate.

I'm happy with the B model.

I agree with other quotes in that the A model was the only F-14 in service from 1974-1987 and was still the mainstay of the fleet for the majority of its service life. I think back to movies like the Final Countdown and Top Gun and they are all A models. So are all the stories from my family about seeing the Tomcat's in the early 80's off the flight deck so it's a bit of a personal reason I guess (which I think is fair).

I think from a game play perspective the B will fit in better with the other 4th gen fighters we are getting along with the FC3 one's. But I also think using the F-14A in the mid 1970's would be fascinating to see it work in an era where there is not even F-15A's and F-16A's, where the F-4 and the F-5 still played a main role as a fighter. Also fighting against the new available MiG-23's in the A or fighting against the new available MiG-29's and Su-27's is a big difference! Just my humble opinion though...

Like an ice skater pulling in his arms, as the wings get more swept, the faster the roll rate. In fact, excessive roll rate can lead to roll coupling thus depart. The aircraft did roll at 270dps with roll SAS disengaged.

Side note, early cas in F15 did have this same phenomenon and in bNk, adverse yaw was prominent to a roll.. bitburg roll depart. I recall there were several f15s... A F15d stands out.. lost

Great video!

This might be a bit off topic but I have this fantastic book on the Tomcat that I cannot recommend enough: https://www.amazon.com/Grumman-F-14-Tomcat-Reminiscences-Service/dp/0760339813

Amazing photos, a lot taken by the crew themselfes. It's only filled with great stories and quotes from the RIOs and pilots who flew her. And yes the problematic TF-30 engines on the F-14A are mentioned time and time again... They had to fly with a lot of restrictions for years to avoid accidents.

Other cool trivia like putting in a consumer GPS during the Balkans conflicts. And of course, a lot of funny Joe "Hoser" Satrapa stories =)

Some of my favourite quotes from the book:

"If it says Pratt and Whitney on the engines, it damn better say Martin-Baker on the seat"

"We had that big beautiful display. With the F-15E you could put the bomb on the building. With the Tomcat, you could put the bomb in the third window from the left, and from miles away..."

"Hoser: Does farts have lumps? RIO: Ehh... no Hose. Hoser: Okay, you do de pre-flight. I'll be back in 10 minutes."

Bad news for LANTIRN.

I think LANTIRN might be a stretch goal, or perhaps a post-release addition, if we do it at all. It's not planned for initial release right now, but plans could change during the year depending on how things progress. We'd certainly like to do it of course, but there are so many other things that take priority.
