Interesting asymmetrical loadouts on RAAF (alert) Hornets recently. ...

Very interesting loadout indeed! I wonder why they would choose to double rack the AMRAAM on 1 pylon, and remove the other one entirely instead of having one on each pylon. Those amraams must have a lot more drag effect than the TGP which is closer to the fuselage.

I'm guessing they're also using the TGP more as a FLIR, since it wouldn't make sense keeping it around if they're also cutting on pylons.

They're most likely using the TGP as a long range VID. More often than not QRA ROE dictate positive VID before engagement...the TGP can provide a PVID at 10 miles or more.

This video is from way back in 2006. I was lucky enough to fly online with the pilot who did this video. If you look close when he turns his head, you will see he is a member of VFA-192. "The World Famous Golden Dragons". As old as this is, I still get chills watching it!

Found on instagram... just in case anyone having problems seeing the differences between the F/A-18 models... ;)

Guess main gear malfunctioned (don't know if that can be done on purpose for training).

Couple of shots later, you can see, possibly the same aircraft, landing with all wheels down + arresting cable

Everybody gotta be offended and take it personally now-a-days

Friends, don't overfeed your Hornets. I'm sure the Navy started calling it the Super Hornet, so the poor thing doesn't feel bad about itself.

Super hornet looks like “hornet's fat cousin“... :D

...more like a “bumblebee“ compared to the sleek lines of the charlie.
