Jet still sliding on Tarawa -- known issue?

Recommended Posts

I recall one of the 1.5.8 updates fixed the issue of the Harrier sliding off the Tarawa, but currently it seems that the jet still moves. This time forwards, very slowly. In the time it takes to start the engines and systems, the jet seems to have moved forward about 10m, with the parking brake on. It seems to creep forward at about 2m per minute on a moving Tarawa. I have not checked if this happens on a stationary boat.

Is this a known issue? I didn't see it listed.

I noticed this as well. After completing an A/G mission, I returned to the Tarawa to reload/refuel. I picked up the slight drift forward too while on the deck.

Trying this today in 1.5.8 I haven't, although it is a bit of a bumpy ride that prevented me from refuelling (the ground crew got a little vocal...). Rearming worked with no issues, though. Could this be an issue about wind speeds, maybe?

This may be user error, are you pointing the nozzles forward or down while this is happening, the only time I see this is when I've set them to conventional/short take off position after landing (which means you're light), and the idle thrust is enough to move you forward slowly.

Make sure they're still in a hover position and see if you still see it.

I'll check it on my next mission, and report back. thanks.

I've tried with all flap/TO positions, adjusting the nozzles front/back, all around. Parking brake on/off, etc. Engine at idle too... I'll still see the slight forward drift of the Harrier.

FWIW, I'm flying a homemade mission. I have the Tarawa moving at 27kts. Is that too fast for this ship? what's the right speed for her to carry out carrier ops? Whether my bird is loaded, or coming back with just 2,000 lbs of fuel (after a mission), I see the drift. As noted above, I've toggled through all sorts of TO, nozzle, and throttle positions.

Maybe that speed is masking it.

To establish any drift is actually occuring you'd have to have the carrier stationary with no wind, then play about with the nozzle angle and see if that causes forward speed at idle, then we'd know for sure, infact I'll have a go myself.

In the missions I've built so far I've been setting the speed at about 10 or so knots.

In a bit, I'll modify my mission to slow down the Tarawa. I presume 27kts is not RL for it? I'll go somewhere between 10 and 20.

edit -

Wiki says 24kts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Tarawa_(LHA-1)

so I'll slow here down to around 20...

Weird... I've tried both 20 and 10kts, and I still get the "drift". Maybe I'll just ditch this mission, and rebuild a complete new one.

For me I have Tarawa at 20 kts, no winds, and the jet noticeably moves in the time that I do my before-engine start checks, so this is even with engines off.

Falling through the port elevator

I've tried looking for other threads regarding this bug but haven't found it anywhere else, so moderators if you think it not the right place to post please move it, thanks!

Since everyone here is talking about the Tarawa: recently I've been landing in spot "7 1/2", the slot between 7 and 8, with the Harrier's wheel close to the edge where the port elevator and the main part of the Tarawa is, my Harrier's left outrigger gear/wheel falls through the elevator as I passed over it taxiing to park the aircraft.

It seems the port elevator surface was not defined to be solid and I have the aircraft fallen through once and stuck precariously twice.

I have not experienced this with my landings. As another poster mentioned, if your nozzles are directed backwards, even at idle thrust it will roll forward.

You must either engage the parking break, or direct nozzles downward to avoid this. I typically set nozzles to 60 on the deck and for taxiing.

Edit

If it's 2.2 I believe it's missing the latest Harrier/Tarawa patch, btw, may contribute to the issue.

I just saw about engines off =)

Btw, the Tarawa model is not finished. Some parts are still untextured even, so yeah, there are holes in the model =)

This bug is definitely still present.

Just let the carrier change his course, or let him move in a circle - your harrier will slowly move to the outer side of the curve and sooner or later drop from the carrier.

Tested 5 minutes ago in multi-player with 4 other guys on 2.2.

No wonder if this guy is right:

I was on a MP server the other night and there was a MI-8 with a start

position on a Tarawa ... soon as you spawned in the heli, you fell off the desk and went splash
