I’d be surprised if the F5 would ever work out what had killed it

Does make me wonder about the recent statement from ED that we shouldn’t discuss new aircraft details.

I thought the F/A-18 was the love child of an F-5 and MiG-29 that snuck out one night at a Farnborough Air Show. Dates are about right dirty old F-5 meets fresh young MiG-29 in '77, out pops the '18 in '78...

 

More seriously though, you can laugh all you want at the twin tail mod, but when Northrop went on to develop the F-5 into the YF-17 (which is the F/A-18's parent), one of the first things they did was add another tailplane…
