A follow-up question from me, is why would you favour using a Mk-82Y over a Snakeye?

The mechanism used to retard the bomb is different, but isn't the end result the same?

I've found that the ballute Mk-82Y has a much higher retardation effect compared to the SnakeEye or AIR. By the time the bomb hits the ground it's practically vertical. This would probably be a good choice to use in a high-threat area that requires a very low-altitude AUTO release that the AIR or SnakeEye may still provide a danger to the releasing aircraft.

It's not very accurate in this mode, but if you're having to use them in that manner, you'd probably be saturating the area with the entire payload in one pass anyway.

In real life there were enough instances of one or more mechanical fins not deploying on a snakeeye that they developed a parachute retarding function - hence the 82Y.

I suspect that no "Mk 82Y" exists IRL at all and it just resembles the stores page code for the Mk 82 AIR since the Snakeye is listed as 82X and there's no Mk 82X as well... (note that I haven't run the latest update yet and I don't know what's in the loadout pages now)

There's no such thing as a "Mk-82Y" only the code 82YT which denotes a certain configuration of Mark 82 bomb.

82YT is a code associated with Mk 82 bomb with BSU-86 metal fin similar in appearance and function to Mk 15 and not a BSU-49 ballute as used in Mk-82AIR, three entirely different tail mechanisms. The US Navy doesn't use the Mk-82AIR with the F/A-18 Hornet at least I've never seen evidence for it.

The 82_ codes B, P, S, X, Y are not really models of the bomb but just letter codes for ballistics, weight, and drag purposes. I'm guessing they stand for blunt, pointed, simulate, X-fin, and Y-the-letter-after-X-fin.

That explains it, thanks

The Y is a strange beast. I battled to get the pipper on target a if I do a level pass like I would with the snakeye the Y can travel quite a distance. Not very retarded feeling to me. Maybe just need to learn it more and you understand it more.

is there a tutorial for these high drag bombs? i match the piper on the target but goes somewhere else. i don't have such problem with normal free fall bombs like mk-83

Just out of curiosity, did you remember to activate retardation, when I dropped them they did a very fast deceleration with the ballute.

82Y (non-thermal protection) is the SMS code for the Mk-82 BSU-49.

Thanks for that Wags. However, it begs more questions. What is meant by 'non-thermal protection' and how does that relate to the ballute?

Navy added thermal protection to ordinance after experiencing several bomb explosions on carriers in fires during the Vietnam war . Killed a bunch of people .

Presumably there are both configurations Mk-82/BSU-86/NTP "82Y" and Mk-82/BSU-86/TP "82YT" and the DCS weapon is the former. They are the same weapon with the coating and slightly different physical characteristics.

Thermal protection is some goopy thick paint stuff (gray or green) that help the bomb last longer sitting in a fire before it explodes. It's distinct in appearance. It adds a fair bit of weight and aerodynamic difference so the SMP has a different code with and without the coating. E.g. 82B and 82BT for the same basic bomb without and with the coating.

In the docs I'm reading there is no "82Y" code in the system, only code "82YT." Thus any non-coated "Y" bomb has to enter the 82YT code and live with the slightly inaccurate representation. Maybe the software or system of the DCS-modeled variant has this code though.

Yip, set to retarded, and when I F6 the bomb, the ballute is out, well it looks like it is out. The white balloon thinggy maggingy at the back of the bomb.
