Reflected Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 I got my rift today....holy macaroni...no words. I couldn't care less about the lower res, I'M ACTUALLY FLYING! Now please, shower me with advice, because DCS is a bit stuttery now. Looking around, movement is jerky. What FPS can I realistically aim for (specs in sig), and what are the big watch outs in terms of settings? I know there are countless threads, but they confused me a bit. Thanks in advance! :pilotfly: Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
Precog Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 It's pretty awesome hey! Couple of this to get you started. Increase PD to about 1.3 for your GPU will improve clarity. Install The Kegetys VR mod for improve performance. You may be able to enable MSAA with this mod, but if performance is your main concern then disable MSAA. You want to aim for 45fps or higher most of the time. ASW to smooth out the frames. Check out my 'real world' video series [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Reflected Posted September 29, 2018 Author Posted September 29, 2018 (edited) I tried to install that shaders mod, but DCS wouldn't even start a mission like that...do I need to reinstall that after each patch? Also: Does it matter if full screen mode is on? Does the resolution setting matter with VR? Can I leave it on 1920x1080? What about ASW - some say it has to be on, some say it's a big performance hit? Sometimes when I start DCS with my headset off, the main menu is so offset I can't see it properly. How to recenter it? Thanks! Edited September 29, 2018 by Reflected Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
Precog Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 When you first install the shaders mod it can take around 10mins for the mission to load...you need to be really patient here. Reinstall after each update...pretty easy. I prefer just a window rather than full screen. That way I can browse the internet etc while missions load and check manuals etc In game resolution is irrelevant for VR. ASW has no performance impact...it smooths out frames but does introduce some minor artifacts. Some people prefer to not use it for this reason but you get stuttering if your not hitting 90fps. I have same setup as you and have been flying VR since it first release. I'd recommend some Pixel density and also some cockpit shadows...visually this makes a big difference. At the end of the day, it's a tradeoff between performance and visuals...only you can make that decision depending on what you prefer. Check out my 'real world' video series [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Quadg Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 5 on the numb pad is centre VR view :) ASW causes visual corruption (warping as the name implies). the gunsight on the spitfire is corrupted by the spinning prop behind it. with ASW on. and the rotor shadow moving across the huey gauges will warp all them and make them unreadable. so I fly no warping thank you very much :) but the choice is everyone's :) staying above 45 is the important number to avoid double vision. 90 is more important if VR makes you queasy.. visual corruption in the eye is better than stomach corruption in the lap :) My Rig: AM5 7950X, 32GB DDR5 6000, M2 SSD, EVGA 1080 Superclocked, Warthog Throttle and Stick, MFG Crosswinds, Oculus Rift.
Reflected Posted September 30, 2018 Author Posted September 30, 2018 Hmm...when I install the shaders mod, I get double vision around the edges of my FOV. Also, it doesn't seem to impact FPS. I get a solid 45 FPS in a Huey over the Caucasus, in a Hornet on a carrier in the PG, But I get 22 FPS in big dogfights over normandy as well as on a populated airfield in the PG. Another problem is that my FPS doesn't go above 45, and I get a strange artifact with the Spit's prop. Now I tried to press LCtrl+Num1, but it didn't help. Is it that I can't turn ASW off? CTRL Num1 is often read as "END" on my keyboard, not sure why, maybe that's it? Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
Quadg Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 if right ctrl num 1 does not work, press the numlock key and try again. I basically press rgt ctrl + num 1 twice with numlock in the middle. (the numlock light is irrelevant) to make sure ASW is off. with the shaders mod you need to increase the masksize setting because it was setup on a Vive. and apparently you see more in the rift (mask area). they tell you the file you need to edit in the thread. increase it to 0.7 or so. My Rig: AM5 7950X, 32GB DDR5 6000, M2 SSD, EVGA 1080 Superclocked, Warthog Throttle and Stick, MFG Crosswinds, Oculus Rift.

Quadg Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 did you press the VR preset button in the DCS settings menu? some people say it makes changes not related to any of the settings sliders. but it may just be a placebo :) you can also disable oculus home when running DCS. but you need to use the old oculus home and not the new opt in beta home. just change the home ".exe" to "run as administrator" and it will not automatically start when the game starts. this does reduce judders. why I opted out of the oculus beta. DCS natively runs the rift. shadows off and View distance to low are about the only settings that will get you anymore FPS, with your DCS settings. oculus does its own Vsync. so frame rates will usually peg at 45 or 90. mostly 45 in DCS. the only time I see different is when its below 45. then you get the actual frame rate. this is ASW off. My Rig: AM5 7950X, 32GB DDR5 6000, M2 SSD, EVGA 1080 Superclocked, Warthog Throttle and Stick, MFG Crosswinds, Oculus Rift.
Ala12Rv-Tundra Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 These are my settings - any recommendations please? Get water to low, and shadows off. Reflected Posted September 30, 2018 Author Posted September 30, 2018 I switched textures back up, and somehow I'm getting 45 now. I can only turn off ASW if I run the debug tool, or so it seems. It's all very confusing, but now it's looking alright. Thing is, that other game that I can't stand otherwise runs much more smoother in VR :( The ground looks quite blurry in DCS when I'm flying low...is it the PD? Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
sirrah Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 When you first install the shaders mod it can take around 10mins for the mission to load...you need to be really patient here. Is it possible that Windows task manager will show DCS World as "not responding" during the loading process? I tried loading a mission after copying the shaders mod but it took much longer than normal. Reflected Posted October 4, 2018 Author Posted October 4, 2018 I just overclocked my Ryzen 1600x to 3.8 as well as my 1070. It did help with the frames. I only wish I could use ASW without getting that hypnotizing propeller disk. I also found that 1.5 PD without MSAA runs much better than 1.2 PD with MSAA at 2x. Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
Reflected Posted October 6, 2018 Author Posted October 6, 2018 No. forget it. 1.2 PD with 2x MSAA runs better. I even lowered it to 1.1. You know what I love most about VR? After a long mission I park the plane, I shut down the engine, then I stand up in the cockpit as if I wanted to climb out. That just does it for me. I feel like I'm standing in a big, powerful WWII warbird, and it's not just a cockpit that's drawn around me. Priceless... :) Facebook Instagram YouTube Discord
Vannipo Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 Dont forget to turn ON the mirrors in the options. And then turn them OFF in the cockpit with a Hotkey in any aircraft. So you have a frozen image in the mirrors (if they dont fold away), but much more FPS. Mostly about 20% more. PS. Maybe someone wrote this before. I didnt read the whole thread.
