Top Jockey Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 (edited) My "path" along with stuff related to the F-14 Tomcat, here in the country most to the west of Europe : In the early 80's, there was "ZX Spectrum". This was the PC early days here, and for this computer I don't recal any software specific about the Tomcat. (Only in late 80's or early 90's saw the world famous TOPGUN movie.) Early 90's - got TOPGUN for Game Boy. 1995 or '96 a cousin offered me : TOPGUN: Fire at Will !, for my 486 PC. Besides the movie, this PC game was the main reason for my growing interest in the F-14. Around this time, also tried Afterburner I at arcade galleries at the malls. Late 90's tried: Afterburner II for Sega Saturn. Early 2000's bought the outstanding Tomcat Alley for PC (which I never forgot once I saw it for Sega Mega Drive the first time.) The full motion vídeo, along with the fictional missile aiming reticule, really attracted me to this format. Also tried Ace Combat 5: Squadron Leader for PlayStation 2. 2012 or so, tried Flight Gear's F-14. Then Strike Fighters 2: North Atlantic came out. Even being a "light sim" this one was also very good... and was the ONLY reason why I updated to Windows 7 at the time. The last was Aerosoft's F-14X for FSX. This was the most feature complete and realistic sim I've played relating the F-14, but understandably lacked the combat aspect. Also bought the Mile High Sims NAS Miramar scenario for FSX, and VRS weapons tacpack. About that F-14's "flagship" for PC gamming - Fleet Defender: Unfortunatelly when it came out in the 90's, I've never seen it here in Portugal ... if I did, my school achievements at that time, would probably have been worst... And that Gentlemen, was my "path". streakeagle Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 That Strike Fighters 2 looked impressive. Wow. Bummer I didn't know about it. Until Flaming Cliffs 3 was patched to have professional flight models, the Strike Fighters series was more realistic aside from slightly more simplified avionics and a terrain engine the looked dated from the time the game was originally released in 2002. The Strike Fighters 2 series remains the best combat flight sim for 1950s to 1980s air combat considering its unmatched plane set, historical terrains/campaigns, and the unbelievable number of free user addons available. But when Strike Fighters stopped development / patches in favor of simple mobile games at the same time that DCS World started adding the MiG-21, F-86, and UH-1, I made the jump. I can only hope that DCS will someday have the terrains with ground objects and to some extent the plane set of the Strike Fighters series, particularly Vietnam and Israel as well as Korea and Germany. But DCS World moves very slow. At least there is an F-4E planned somewhere over the horizon. If the Heatblur F-14 is at least as good as the Viggen, then the F-14A is going to be one of the best DCS World modules and make all previous games featuring the F-14 look like crap. I am very much looking forward to flying an early F-14A with tempermental TF30 engines. Challenging but rewarding to learn, fly, and fight. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Top Jockey Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Are you people training your carrier landings ? Thank you DOSBox 0.74 ! Top Jockey Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 (edited) These are from the unbelievable : Mile High Sims's NAS Miramar scenario (circa 1986), for FSX. (For those who like the immersion feeling, that's probably very well spent money.) That's a pity I didn't keep more photos from the base / hangars / flight line, and I have not FSX neither the tons of stuff installed now. And no, I wasn't trying to kill Maverick - just to show the point the developers went: The film character is included in the scenario, in the road at the end of Runway 24R... edit: The aircraft itself is obviously not related with the scenario developers, it's the Aerosoft's F-14X for FSX. (The most realistic portraying of the Tomcat I've seen so far, systems and external model wise.)
