Pimax 5K+ DCS review and 2080ti benchmarks

Hi,

Have tried to set the supersampling in steamvr. However, as soon as DCS starts, it resets the SS to 100%

Is there some setting for this ?

Hey all, I just got my 5k+ today, and I am loving it, but I am having an issue with VR Zoom. When I zoom in I find that it makes me extremely cross-eyed and its near impossible to use. Is anyone else experiencing this and does anyone have a fix?

In pitool enable compatible parallel projection option, de game will be slower but you will have zoom, personally, I never use zoom so I have this option disabled.

I know I keep asking but is the picture clarity the best when being compared to other headsets you have owned? Just want to make sure I made the right decision in ordering the 5k as the cockpit clarity is a big thing for me.

I for one can definitely say that clarity and readability of cockpit instruments is much better than in the Rift.

There are some issues to be aware of though and it seems quality control needs to be improved if you read the pimax forums.

My Headset arrived in great condition.

Picture quality is far better than Vive and better than Vive Pro, In the F-18 I always used the zoom to read the DDI, with the pimax 5k I don't use Zoom anymore. At the other hand, performance can kill you.

I would take performance over clarity any day. I can use zoom for better clarity, much harder to better performance.

Not knocking anyone's choice of headset . I would love to have the ability to run a Vive Pro or Pimax , but the lower pixel-count of the Rift or Vive taxes even the best equipment available now while running DCS . I chose the Rift partly because it or a Vive are the only headsets that can give satisfactory performance with my 'puter as currently configured . Even when i incorporate planned upgrades , i will be using the extra horsepower to increase things like PD , visibility range , grass/clutter , shadows and the like rather than running a higher resolution headset at the low settings I run now to maintain performance .

Sadly , we can't have it all :)

Glad to hear clarity is good.... Not the least bit surprised on the performance comment.

VR performance in DCS is one of those really really bizzare things. It is literally the only VR title where my system struggles. Think about that... Bottom of the barrel system, runs fine with "generic dangerous space sim" in ultra VR mode, no issues... "Generic ww2 flight sim" on highest settings... Not much problem... DCS, it works ok... But dudes with 2080ti's aren't running much better than a dude with a 980m? WTF-O?

Pimax user just tried DCS with new Pitools update and said the below:

First time a try a PiTool with Brainwarp. It’s impressive makes IL-2 Sturmovik smooth. DCS is playable, a few stutters here and there, but mostly smooth.

I tried the 60Hz (or is it 64?) and there was some visible flickering on the map in IL-2, but nothing too problematic. I did not notice any flickering while flying. I also tried 72Hz and I think I’ll stick to that for this kind of heavy games.

I did not see any option for variable-rate shading, is it automatic or disabled in this version?

This may help those with lacking performance in DCS.

if that is the case, then the gpu is probably not the bottleneck.

but keep in mind it’s difficult to

compare systems. when two guys say they are both using ABC settings, it turns out it’s almost never actually the case. they just think they are running the same settings.

so most often you are comparing apples and oranges.

Getting closer... Keeping fingers crossed!

Having tried the new Pitool with Brainwarp, 72Hz and with very conservative settings in DCS (PD 1.0, VR Settings with 2x AA), I have to say that it's still not at the level of performance where I would like it.

No wonder, since a PD of 1.0 on the Pimax 5k+ is the equivalent of over 2.8 (!) on the Rift or Vive.

And that's using hardware that's close to the fastest available.

I'm hoping that the fixed foveated rendering and performance optimization in DCS will fill the gap that's still there.

Not what I wanted to hear. Can you get better performance with a reduced FOV?

I haven't experienced a noticeable difference between low and normal FOV, so I've stuck to normal.

I played around with the settings a bit more yesterday, but didn't get particularly far with Pimax and DCS settings alone.

In search of more performance I installed kegetys VR are shaders mod and I'm glad to say that performance is much improved. It's at a level now where I would say it's more or less playable.

I think that with official ED performance tweaks and improvement of brainwarp + ffr, I may become quite happy with the headset.

Hi, could you please share your settings ? (pitool, steamvr and DCS), I almost have the same hardware as you (WC 2080TI@2100mhz) but very low fps in DCS solo airbase strip with F18.

What is strange is that CPU is 50%load and GPU max 80%, even with brainwarp disable.

I have a Pimax 5k+ and the clarity is really good, but with noAA or AAx2 I think it's really flickering.

Thanks for your return

I've now tweaked various settings to a point where I'm pretty happy with the performance. I still get a few micro-stutters which haven't been able to get rid of yet. I'm thinking maybe preload radius?

Steam VR:

Manual override SS: 126% (steamVR recommended) - I tried setting below this without any real performance gains.

Nvidia control panel:

Power setting - Prefer maximum performance (helps a lot with GPU utilization issues)

VR pre rendered frames - 3

Pitool settings:

Hidden mask area - on

Brainwarp - on

Refresh rate - 72 Hz

DCS Settings:

Textures & water set to high

Visib range medium

Heat blur off

Shadows high

MSAA 2x

Depth of field off

Clutter/grass off

Trees about 2/3

Preload full

Chimney smoke 1

Anisotropic 8x

Terrain shadows flat

Cockpit global ill. on

VR pixel density 1.0

Mods:

VR shaders mod - very important, as it probably gave me the best boost. Super long loading times after first start is normal, be patient.

... Settings ...

Do you reach 72 FPS with your machine and these settings and how consistent are those, which maps are you flying and which aircraft(s)? Do you barely get into Brainwarp area or does the FPS counter push towards 72 FPS "easily"?

Does the shaders mod work with the Pimax?

Yes it should since the shader mod replaces files in your DCS folder. So it's not dependent on what kind of VR goggles you have.

Honestly, I haven't been looking at fps at all, only at the qualitative experience, which is good overall, but I see ghosting on fast moving objects.

What's the best way to view fps from within the headset?
