Is your nosewheel strut compressed? You can't steer once you kneel the aircraft, you have to extend the strut

 that was it. thanks!

Same problem here after training with Jester. Tried extending strut, nothing worked, pressing N, using the joystick. nothing.

Odd, nose wheel steering worked perfectly fine taxiing in other areas/conditions. Any thoughts? Definitely not a key bind issue.

Nose Wheel steering

I was trying to complete the startup trainings and couldn’t for the life of me figure this out. What I didn’t check was to see if my strut was extended or in the kneel position. More than likely it was the latter. What I do find odd is that yesterday I was landing the aircraft at Nellis. All was smooth until I touched down and started to taxi. No NWS! I instinctively pressed S, being used to the F-18. Nothing. Kept pressing it and trying to turn and finally it worked. I swear I never pressed N, which I realized earlier was the correct button to engage NWS. Not sure how all that transpired, but thought I’d throw that out there.

As was mentioned in another tab, it seems if you inadvertently pull the emergency landing gear release, it stops nws from working. I know I've had that a couple of times when trying to extend the fuel probe for startup checklist.

is there a way to reboot the system/computer so that you can activate NWS again if you've accidentally pulled the LDG gear release? it's so easy to accidentally click the wrong thing, and even with differential braking AND throttle, the Tomcat just does not want to turn on the ground without NWS.

No, when you trigger emergency landing gear release, it empties a compressed gas bottle, so not an easy reset. Maybe HB will add it to the repair option in the ground crew menu.

Hi I made a flight on the Persian Gulf Map, with the Stennis. Flew out of Sharjah, and landed on the carrier. Released the hook and moved forward but nosewheel steering did not work.

Is it to do with the turning of the landing gear handle, I notice it turned.....don't remember seeing that happen before so will have to play with it a bit...pity really I was so chuffed, and then Jester realised I was screwed and told us to eject,yep...not the final landing I wanted lol....so much to learn

Every time you land, you need to enable Nose Wheel Steering by pressing the NWS enable / Autopilot enable button on your stick.

EDIT: Check for the Yellow NWS Enabled light on the left side of the HUD.

it's a hit or miss, on MP servers. you have to leave the server and come back in to get it to work.

I'm having same issues with the NWS, not turning on even though its bound to the stick "N", and the button is moving. Tried everything up/down on the nose gear, master reset, open close wings, even re-selecting role only thing that works is leave the MP server you're on and rejoin.

If you turn the Landing Gear lever, you are engaging emergency gear down. This depressurizes a nitrogen container to put out the landing gear in case of a hydraulics loss. Unfortunately NWS won't work afterwards and it can't be repaired on ground (yet), so you will have to restart.

Better yet: don't touch the landing gear lever.

Hey Heatblur, can we get this to be repairable please? If someone likes to do full alignment cold starts (me) and only has time for maybe one flight a night (me, tonight) it’d be really nice to be able to repair the nws if one accidentally twists the LG handle while attempting to check the refuel probe (yeah, me again).

Yup, I turned it trying to figure out how to hit the refueling probe. Clicked the probe but it turned the landing gear handle.

Thanks for explaining that I need to restart. Cuts down on my confusion! :)

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

No, had to do it last night. Right brakes, left throttle - turns on a dime ;) If you need more power you can disengage AB assymetry limiter.

I got into this at the runway end after 1h mission. NWS was a no go. I quickly remembered this OP so went check how to resolve. OK - there's no solution but to get mission success I needed to park in the right spot...

btw: It's HB's fault because I just wanted to check how that "floating emer. gear handle" looks like after fix ;P

SIGH.... SO FRUSTRATED.. ALMOST every time I TAKEOFF I HAVE TO CHASE THE AIRPLANE TO KEEP FROM RUNNING OFF THE RUNWAY. BUT it is WEIRD SOMETIMES IT WILL PULL TO THE RIGHT SOMETIMES TO THE LEFT. VERY RARELY IT WILL GO STRAIGHT. AND SOMETIMES IT WILL PULL REALLY BAD OTHER TIMES NOT SO MUCH. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS PLS? TY IT IS SO ANNOYING. A TIME OR TWO I HAVE CRASHED BEFORE EVER LEAVING THE GROUND. I'M A NOOB BTW IT STEERS WITH MY TWIST FOR THE RUDDER. I ONLY HAVE THE USE UF MY LEFT HAND DUE TO A BAD STROKE. TY IN ADVANCE

Crypta, welcome to the hard reality, planes don't drive on rails and are affected by wind and runway imperfection and they are never perfectly balanced (left/right) too. Just use gentle rudder corrections and you're good to go.

Hello Crypta,

I tried this out with only one hand, but it takes a little practice.

I used my CH 568 Combatstick with the left hand (I am right hand), and put my left little finger on the throttle wheel, and my thumb and first finger around the bottom of the stick. With the throttle I adjust the engines, and with slight movements on the stick left and right I was able to keep the nose on the runway, considering low wind speeds.

Don't give up too early, it is manageable! :pilotfly:

BTW: I never had rudders, not since 1991 when all started ...

Kind regards!

Repairs in general are still WIP a bit, but I put down an extra tracker for this.

Just found this one because I hit the emergency brake by accident on a cold start and couldn't figure out why I couldn't steer.

Guess it would be an expensive mistake, though perhaps the default binding would be a keybind instead of a mouse action since some other switches are nearby and wouldn't be nearly the same muscle motion to twist out the landing gear handle as flicking a switch.

I thought I had this, but it turns out it was the nose gear kneeling randomly on the server. The switch is always set OFF when joining the server, but the actual status of the nose gear value seems to be random for me.

Recently  I just always flip the gear switch to EXTD every flight and wait and see if I needed it... so far it's been reliable to resolve it on the private MP server I play on with at least a half dozen joins.

So, to be clear, your saying if NWS doesn't work to cycle the nose compression to EXTD and that clears it up?

Hi.

Last MP flights I had that kind of issue and cycling the launch bar to full extension of their travel did fix it. It is like if the kneel was partially engaged, not fully extended nor retracted, so completing the cycle did the trick for me.

Using this thread to ask another NWS question. (Keeps NWS questions together?)

If by accident you taxi a couple of feet too far forward on Stennis or Forrestal, I have found the bow area (FLY 1) too narrow to turn around in, even with what I believe to be full left/right lock. External view seems to show my F14 only showing approx 45degrees of turn.

Is this right? There is no NWS HIGH option like on AV-8B, but surely the nose wheel can turn further?

Thank you
