DCS getting too big on my SSD, files to delete?

Recommended Posts

With all the maps and modules, DCS is about to fill up a hard drive (that only has one other game on it)

I've read before, and now for the life of me can't find, that there were temporary files you could delete along with MP track files to free up more space. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where they are?

Also, I never use the Nevada map anymore now that I completed Red Flag there in my A10c, is there a way to delete/Uninstall just Nevada to free up even more room?

Thank you all in advance, this community is the best!

I added another SSD for DCS. You can just copy the folder over and change the target on your shortcut and you're good to go.

SSDs are so cheap nowadays it's ridiculous. I got a 256gb NVMe drive only thing on it is DCS. THAT cuts down on load times for reelz :p

looking to cut down on file size.

Good luck. I think my install is over well over 100gb now.

I used mklink to move Nevada and Normandy to the HDD without any kerfuffle.

It's not as if anyone flies on those maps anyways...

That's a great idea.

Now I can spread out those modules/terrains to other disks:pilotfly:

If you have multiple small SSDs (like me), combine them into a larger disk pool with windows disk manager. It's basically raid 0.

Downside is even only one of your pooled disks fails, all your data in the pool might not be recoverable.

But i still do this because (1) nowdays ssd has pretty good lifetime warranty. (2) it's just game so in the case of hardware fault i can just reinstall everything.

Might a good thing if you have multiple SATA (3/6 Gbps) SSDs. NVMe can be a little bit waste if pooled with slower disks.

Keep in mind that DCS will grow even more with time. New maps are coming and modules anyway. What is exactly enough today will soon be a bad solution.

SSDs are cheaper than ever. Saw a Kins**n 256 GB for 18 EUR in a sale. Better and bigger ones are still cheaper than a DCS module. They are easy to install. (As long as you want em only for games.)

Online? Not really.

Offline? Who can say. I myself fly those maps all the time.

I wish performance was more even across all maps. If I could delete Dubai from the map so I don't have to deal with stutters and dibs every time I get close to it I'd fly the PG map way more.

An SSD performance depends a lot of the free space you have in it. The more it is filled, the worse is his performance, it's necessary to have always as much free space as we can.

So, you may consider to buy a large one. I bought a 2TB SSD for a reduced price last Black Friday, and I have all my games installed on it, it works perfect.

there are some good deals out there. i picked up a 1T (1000GB) ssd for $99 usd two months ago.

that should be enough for most DCS installations

Can this be done if each drive is a different size?

Yes, you can even add more drives to the array without losing its contents ... its a windows feature called "storage spaces". Is not the same as Raid-0 in that the performance isnt higher than the performance of the individual disks.

Also, if I remember correctly, windows cant be installed onto one of this arrays.
