Spitfire F.IX was a rushed development to get the series 60 Merlin (the 61 to be precise) on the front of an F.V airframe to counter the general issues presented by the early series Fw 109s; the A-0/1/2.

The Spitfire LF.IX comes when an Fw 190A-3 force landed in Pembry UK and was captured. Direct performance evaluation discovered there was still a few altitude bands where the A-3 was faster than the F.IX but by changing the supercharger gear ratios on the Merlin - and thus creating the Merlin 66 - that gap was closed. Ergo the LF.IX is born.

The Fw 190A-8s primary difference to the A-5 is that it had a structurally redesigned and lighter wing (from the A-6) and the nose mounted armament was increased to two MG 131 fuselage machine guns (A-7) and a new radio, IIRC.

Weight of fire for tackling US bombers seems to have been the primary driver in the development of the A-8 (via the -6 & -7).

Given the disposition of the Jagdwaffe in late '43 and into 1944, their primary concern was intercepting USAAF B-17s/B-24s, not dogfighting Spitfires over the Channel or Pas de Calais.

what ? a-8 high alt interceptor with that supercharger gearing? wierd

With the failure of the Fw 190B to reach production, developmental work on the C (DB603 powered) stalled due to engine shortages - amongst other problems - and the D variant now in development as a stop-gap variant whilst the Ta-152 was perfected there was no option for the Jagdwaffe to get a 'high-alt' Fw 190 before late '44.

So, whilst the A series wasn't ideal at high altitude it didn't mean that it couldn't operate up there - and if it's all you have then you do what you can to make it as effective as possible.

The A-8 had an additional rear fuel tank like the Dora, for GM1 or C3 fuel, but GM1 was never used.

My sources states that very small percentage of A-8 was indeed fitted with GM-1 injection system but no combat records survived. Most probably these planes never made it past test phases.

Since June 1944 all planes were fitted with engine boost system "Erhöhte Notleistung für Jäger" that increased the engines performace up to 2050 PS.

I have not bought it because it is basically a slow D9 with a radial engine(it will be eaten alive by the P51 and Spit 9). Though I would buy an F - 8 but no idea if that is included or a separate module?

Luckily not everyone thinks that way or by the same merit no one would have ever brought the Spitfire, P-51 or P-47.

I would have brought it already were I not waiting to blow my money on a new GPU.

Why would you not buy the spitfire or P51? The spitfire is a great fighter and has a very good chance vs the D9 and K4.

The P 51 sucks at dog fighting the K4 but it is the best WW2 ground attacker at the moment and can at least dive away from the K4.

The P47 should have dive flaps, a radial engine, fastest dive speed and fast at very high alt. It will also be a very good ground attacker, fastest fighter at 30000ft+ and the heaviest WW2 fighter in DCS. These are all unique characteristics that make it interesting.

I don't want to get an A8 if an F8 is going to be released separately because the F8's ground attack capabilities were pretty awesome and I don't see much fun trying to dogfight in it. The P51D is faster at all altitudes so you cant even hit and run. The Spit 9 is only about 10mph slower then it on the deck, turns way better and climbs way better and is generally faster above 5000ft.

The F8 should be a little faster on the deck, more armored and carry some nice ground attack load outs. One 250kg bomb with four 50kg bombs, or maybe a single 1000kg bomb, I think it could carry one 500kg with two 250kg bombs to?

Don't get me wrong, its a really cool plane and I'm glad it is being added to DCS. I would definitely buy it if I did not know the F8 was coming. But choosing between an A8 or F8 the F8 is way more interesting to me and more useful in multiplayer which is what I fly.

If you start the dogfight with you behind him, you've got a good chance. Just need to use flaps and not have loaded gratuitous amounts of fuel. I was out turning a 109 on the deck yesterday. We did 2 revolutions before I crawled up on him and knocked off his wing. The trick is defueling and balancing on the rudder. The P-51 doesn't suck at dogfighting. It's not great either, but it's no slouch in the right hands and conditions.

Can't wait for the P-47. Will be fun taking more ground fire than I ever could before in the Mustang, all while I laugh maniacally.

every thing is on pilot side good p-51 pilot met bad bf-109 pilot, that is why after combat reports have very little common with actual plane preformance

for exmple lots of ppl are flying bf109 without auto prop so they are flying fixed pitch so they cant go past 1ATA at higher speeds to not over rev engine, lots of ppl in dcs dont care about keeping ball centered in turns

New planes usually come out with updates, and updates drop wednesdays. Also, they did write the exact date of release in the trailer which is the 5th of june, today. But since there is no update today, it won't be released today.
