Turn off the cockpit bubble option for VR

Recommended Posts

The perspex (or whatever) is a barrier to clear view in VR. The F16 is noted for its clear all round view and I would like the option to turn off the graphic that interferes with the clarity.

With existing modules i can put my head `through` the perspex and the jump in visibility can be marked. I would like option to turn off for all cockpits actually. Clarity varies but can be like looking through a fine mesh stocking.

It is best to wait until it is released before passing judgement.

I am having no issues in VR with the F-16 canopy, visibility is amazing.

Also... Canopies mess with your visibility IRL as well. But they do other handy things like keep 600mph birds, bees, wind and rain out of your face. Which can be quite useful.

Strong reflections on canopies are very much a thing, due to the shape of the canopy. My issue here (and on other modules) is that the "reflections" are just static textures with an alpha channel, overlaid on the canopy, so they don't behave realistically. In any event, they're easy to get rid of, it's just a quick edit in Photoshop or Gimp.

You should try sitting in a real Viper-cockpit with the canopy closed once. You'll VERY quickly see that while it does offer superior visibility in comparison to jets of yesteryear, you'll also see that you get both a tremendous amount of reflections and that the canopy has more scratches than a gaggle of kittens will give you when you play with them.

I can understand the issue, though.

I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.

What, you've never flown with a jettisoned canopy in the hornet? Haha, works well!

This also works nicely in the Tomcat...and you even have a helpful gentleman sitting in the back that won't hesitate to assist you in getting that unobstructed view!

I stick my head out the canopy sometimes in the hornet when I am trying to spot something on the ground when in vr. It’s a way clearer view for sure. It would be nice to have an option.

Which VR set are you using? Is there any consensus on the best VR set within the testing team for the Viper?

Exactly. I expect better reflections from DCS. Be it a HUD or canopy... Even a MFCD or instruments...

Most definitely. It's immersion breaking for me to look outside or on the MFDs and see the reflections remain the same no matter the viewing angle. The Tomcat (best) and the Harrier (second best) have the best reflections in the game right now, because they're purely based on roughmets. I've used their approach for a personal cockpit texture mod for the Hornet and I very much prefer it to the original ones. They also have monitors give off light and in the case of the Harrier, it's reflected on the canopy, something that the Hornet and, from what I can see, the Viper don't do.

Concur. The cockpit reflection effect is wildly overdone in many modules. For example, the MiG-15bis is unusable because of it.

The big problem about those reflections is the utter fact they're totally static. This kills the whole visual immersion of DCS once 6DOF comes into play for some modules which is, otherwise, pretty close to perfect. And the F-16 as the most recent module brings this issue forth even on the MFDs...

But if you think the MiG-15bis is bad, you didn't try to use the gunsight of the L-39 yet... rainbowdashwink.png

But nevertheless I guess the whole light dynamics thing will be reworked eventually as DCS and it's engine naturally evolve over time. Things like proper reflections (especially on mirrors), refraction (The Bar™ comes to mind) and perfectly soft shadow borders are yet to come. Give that useless RTX silliness or similar technologies some time to get born, add a decent API like Vulkan to the mix and we'll see that in the future, the question is just: When? icon_redface.gif

Reminds me of someone asking HB whether there were some cats having had an orgy on the canopy... rdlaugh.png

IRL you can physically shift your point of focus outside the aircraft, which mitigates glare. In the simulation it's just a fake opacity that ruins the ability to see out of the cockpit at all.

In DCS it's basically like trying to look through a screen door with fixed lenses after a cataract surgery (which basically totally kills the possibility to focus depth-wise on anything). I know what I'm talking. Can't see anything through those anymore. Albeit I have the impression it's less of an impact in VR.

I am sure it won't take long for a 'Clear Canopy' mod to come out like every other aircraft if it's too bad. Generally you need the same 3-4 mods for most aircraft to make them actually enjoyable in DCS, such as a clearer canopy mod, readable cockpit labels in VR, various texture fixes, NVG blur removal in VR etc.

Hello :)

Could you please tell which mods (VR friendly) are you using for 18?
