I am of course using the mod bettertrees by Taz1004 and I find that the last ED screenshots are showing such a kind of improvement.
The Taz mod combined with the Bartek mod you can have such kind of environement which is clearly giving a new nice Caucasus map! 😀

I wondered the same.  They were posted here:

Silver_Dragon doesn't mention exactly where they were from, just "ED add new Caucasus map screenshopts: On develop".  First mention I've seen of any possible updated.

They're from here:

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/screenshots/

But I think they mostly show different types of clouds and how they lay upon terrain.

Any plans to add detail to the Crimean Peninsula and southern Ukraine?

Edit: Maybe a separate paid map for this area up to say, Kyiv.

Hey, didn't want to start a new thread but thought my question woud fit in here pretty nice. 🙂

Since you guys now launch Afghanistan in that new way, I was wondering, if you've considered maybe launching some new parts for Caucasus in the same way as well? I know, it's a free to play map and it is awesome Full Stop!

But i for myself would really would like to get some more points of interests into it. And this seems like a perfect opportunity for something like this. 🙂

Many ppl surely would like to see Crimea but I for myself would love to go for a spin above a high-res Istanbul.^^

Caucus was build on what is now a pretty old technology so the chances of adding anything to it are pretty slim.  To do so they'd probably need/want to start from scratch and I don't see that happening.

Now that ED has new terrain tech, that speeds things up (as Wags said), they should retouch their maps, starting with Caucasus. And expand it all the way to northern Turkey and southern Ukraine. The whole black sea coast 🙂

I'm wondering if ED are making a rod for their own back here when they try and make it 'backwards compatible' for all the missions, and whether it would be better to treat it like Normandy, and have Caucasus 2 released, with the original still being available. Users can choose which one they want to play on, and leave it to the mission makers to update their missions to be compatible on v2 if they want to support those missions with the new map?

I imagine this would be far less work for ED, and give them more flexibility to improve with less restrictions, and give an opportunity for updates to be released far earlier.

Don't get me wrong - I think the desire to keep it backwards compatible to minimize the workload to mission designers to upgrade is an admirable one... I just wonder though if it's more trouble than it's worth long term if the same thing could be achieved by having a v1 and v2 version of the terrain?

Yes, you are right in this point. For me it would also be better to have a aditional caucasus map with all the new technologies instead of a beefed up version of the old caucasus map with still 20 year old technology in it just to keep backwards compatibility

Didn't ED go through that exact same process when they updated Caucasus for v2.5? If I remember correctly,  there was a fairly substantial increase in ground mesh resolution, which led to concerns that existing missions would find ground units suddenly hovering in mid-air or stuck inside the ground as if it were another Philadelphia experiment. Didn't they make changes to the ME so that any ground units would be checked for elevation automatically?
Even this week, I opened one of my older missions only to find a SAM-battery had the "units are tilted" icon in the ME, and moving the icons on the map just by a few centimetres fixed it.

Maybe to start fresh is better than a remake, while like Raven says they've done it before. If they start fresh a tool for porting missions would be nice.

It's a good map because of the mulitude of missions and it performs well.

If you make it fresh and incompatible you lose the benefits. Better make a new different map instead.

Imho best to refresh it with new textures, objects and better mountains mesh, optimizing it in the process.

At least they should update all of the airports of the map to the same standard as Senaki, Mozdok or Vaziani. Airports like Krasnodar or Kobuleti still have the bend pag-14 plates from old flanker 2.0 or lomac days 25 years ago.

If a new revamped Caucasus is built with the new tech, we need to have the option to remove the old. So much potential for this map.

You can completely remove Caucasus through the module manager if that what's you mean.
Cheers!
