CommandT Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Hey folks, I'm trying to figure out how trees look so smooth and 3D on videos of DCS but for me with all textures set to high they look kind of FSX-ish. 2D and with jagged unpleasant edges. Can't figure it out. Using 2.5.5
razo+r Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 What is your tree slider set to? (At far ranges they will go into simple "2D Textures" anyway due to performance reasons)
Bobik2002 Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Screenshot would help. Ryzen 9 5900x | 32GB DDR4 | RTX 3090 | 32GB RAM
Eight Ball Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 I think he meant a screenshot of the trees lol Find The Links To All My Mods And Liveries Here (in the gallery)
razo+r Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Pump the tree slider up, that should help a bit. But an advice. The higher FOV, the sooner the shitty LOD arrives on your screen.

What do you mean FOV? And what is LOD? I don't think the tree slider helps much here. At max it looks the same really.
razo+r Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 What do you mean FOV? And what is LOD? I don't think the tree slider helps much here. At max it looks the same really. FOV = Field of view = Zoom LOD = Layer/Level of detail.
CommandT Posted May 1, 2020 Author Posted May 1, 2020 My question is why in Matt Wagners videos the trees look silky smooth and 3D and mine look like crap haha
razo+r Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Lol, don't set your expectations based on ED's videos. We've already seen effects in our game that didn't look anywhere near what they showed us. And also, I think depending on how old the video is that you are referencing, it could be outdated as ED updated/messed the trees up someday in some update.
Rogue Trooper Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 I believe the overall view distance setting also affects the tree draw distance setting. HP G2 Reverb (Needs upgrading), Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate. set to OpenXR, but Open XR tool kit disabled. DCS: Pixel Density 1.0, Forced IPD at 55 (perceived world size), DLSS setting is quality at 1.0. VR Driver system: I9-9900KS 5Ghz CPU. XI Hero motherboard and RTX 3090 graphics card, 64 gigs Ram, No OC... Everything needs upgrading in this system!. Vaicom user and what a superb freebie it is! Virpil Mongoose T50M3 base & Mongoose CM2 Grip (not set for dead stick), Virpil TCS collective with counterbalance kit (woof woof). Virpil Apache Grip (OMG). MFG pedals with damper upgrade. Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound... goodbye VRS.

Hi All of wags videos are based on the same version of DCS as our clients. It's just a matter of settings, choosing good times of day, and sun angles. thanks Forum rules - DCS Crashing? CommandT Posted May 1, 2020 Author Posted May 1, 2020 It's not just Wags, I've seen other youtube videos with really nice looking trees. I am honestly absolutely lost as to how mine look so fake andunnapealing! I mean irrispective of zoom, they just look terrible. Like trees from LOMAC from years ago... do you guys have similar looking trees in your game? I've tried different locartions, different times of day and seasons and something just isn't right.
ED Team BIGNEWY Posted May 1, 2020 ED Team Posted May 1, 2020 Can you do me a track replay and a screenshot showing it, I may have a report already about it, but I want to confirm you are seeing the same issue. thanks Forum rules - DCS Crashing? wilbur81 Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 (edited) 2d trees by Timur Khayrov, on Flickr Honestly, what are you even talking about? The trees look great in this screenshot. And as BigNewy said, the beauty of DCS and the hype/trailer videos is that they ARE being made with the exact same graphics available to us. Have you ever cranked up the wind, by the way, and watched them? All however-million trees on that map move, bend, and sway in the wind. The trees are actually quite remarkable in DCS. Their shadows can make our hardware cry, though. :) Edited May 1, 2020 by wilbur81 i7 8700K @ Stock - Win11 64 - 64gb RAM - RTX 3080 12gb OC
Art-J Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Well, that's just the way they are. After introduction of speedtree technology, the trees in DCS have always been lacking in shading department, and with low LODs kicking in relatively close, they tend to look cardboard'ish from the distance indeed. The WWII-competitor-that-shall-not-be-named does an order of magnitude better job in this particular aspect. On the other hand, DCS can easily render insane amounts of them without much of a performance impact even on medium-grade computers (and those of us who remember DCS 1.2.x-1.5.x know what a giant difference it makes compared to the "old times"), plus, at some scenic low-sun condition even these trees can look relatively nice, as you noticed in the excellent trailers. You will get used to them after a while. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
applesinduck Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 It's been reported since ages ago. ED is still working on it, allegedly. See https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=260918. This is the biggest reason that keeps me from playing Caucasus because how ugly the tree can look at certain conditions. CommandT Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Can you do me a track replay and a screenshot showing it, I may have a report already about it, but I want to confirm you are seeing the same issue. thanks Could you confirm what you mean by "track replay"? Sorry I've not had DCS for too long so still learning the ropes. I assume it's the track file of a particular flight, not an actual recording for me to put up on youtube? How can I get a track file across? And looking at the other thread mentioned ealier about this from February - yes, that is EXACTLY the issue I have. The shading of the trees is all totally messed up and they make everything looks super ugly as opposed to the super nice textured 3D-looking trees you see in Wags's videos as well as plenty of other youtube videos. It's not an FOV issue. It's always an issue at any zoom, any angle, any time of day, any tree draw distance settings. So I take it this is some sort of computer-specific issue that a few people are clearly experiencing?
ED Team BIGNEWY Posted May 2, 2020 ED Team Posted May 2, 2020 Hi A track replay can be saved when you exit a mission during the debrief window. The file will save as a .trk and you can attach it here, please also take a screenshot so we can see what you see, you can use the print screen key for this. files are saved in your saved games dcs folder thanks Forum rules - DCS Crashing? ED Team BIGNEWY Posted May 2, 2020 ED Team Posted May 2, 2020 Thanks for confirming, yes we do have this reported, more noticeable in f2 or f7 views. It is the LOD on the trees needs to be tweaked. thank you Forum rules - DCS Crashing?
