2080Ti vs RTX 3090 for VR

I didnt mean to question that DCS was perfectly programmed but that we actually seeing a complete new release by one of the most powerfull companies in the bussiness.

If anyone should have the power to make this about right they should.

Its easy to understand the massive work and time needed to incorporate vulkan for ED, which I guess have quite small resources compared to microsoft...If it was a small and easy task to make FS2020 optimized we most definitive should have seen that on FS2020.

I have accepted that DCS will be hard on hardware and I have invested to compansate for this earlier and also now, by ordering a Asus Strix 3090 OC to increase the performance.

True that. I think it's because hardware iterations are more frequent than software optimizations.

In any case, flightsims in general are among the most demanding (consumer)software and often require quite a beefy systemspec. It'll always be a struggle in a way. :joystick:

FS2020 only load one core hard and all others more or less sleeps.

Correct, and somewhat surprising. I mean why DX11 in a flagship MS title?

However, I guess we're getting off topic here.

It's not the graphics, as I said, MSFS is totally CPU bound. GPU idles along, whilst the CPU knocks its pan out!

Not for me( 1440P screen, settings maxed out).

Most of the time the indicator in developer mode says limited by GPU.

Some times it says limited by main thread and some times is alternernating between the two.

Also, can keep 60fps quite much.

My friend with a 10980XE +2080ti +4k screen do not either allways say limited by main thread.

4K settings tuned down from highest to keep 60fps mostly.

Ok, so these are 2080Ti vs 3080 VR tests but the results are quite surprising and I felt worth showing:

1440p says it all. Yep, no problem at that res for me.

I'm going to stop now on MSFS, as we will get told off very soon!

Also I don't understand why people insist on Top Hi End CPU like i9 9900K or i9 10900K when i510600K will do the work same good as i9 in DCS?

My guess because no one really has JUST a DCS machine. I'm guessing lot of people do other work on the machine.

I know I do.

Hry, guys. I'm a noob when it comes to posting but I have scowered the threads for several years. I wanted to get your input/advice on possible upgrades. Bear in mind, I am sensible and understand graphic settings have a lot to do with how DCS performs, but I am trying to get more oomph and smoothness out of DCS. I use the Reverb, but have the G2 on pre-order. I mainly play only DCS, but now MSFS 2020 a d soon Star Wars Squadrons.

I currently have an i8700k, Asrock Pro4 mobo, 32gb patriot viper ram, low end aio cooler, rtx 2080 (non super) and Samsung Pro 970.

I have been looking at picking up a 3090 but Im hesitant that the $800 bump from the 3080 will be marginal. I could get a 10700k and Aorus mobo for that $800 spread. Trouble is the vram. Only has 10gb and I was really hoping for 16gb on the 30i0. Rumors say we are poasibly getting a 20gb 3080 but Id be surprised to see it priced under $1000. I wouldnt put it past Nvidia to price it closer to $1200.

Anyhoo, Im open to advice. Pilots here have a lot of experience and I respect that. While I can spend the money, I want to make sure Im getting my money's worth and also not wasting it in an area where my pc might already perform fairly well.

I should also mention spotting and maintaining visual is a problem for me that I hope the g2 will clear up a bit. VR in DCS can get pretty hazy.

Until recently, I had 8700K system but running at 5.1GHz. And when I went from 1080Ti to 2080Ti, I saw a nice bump in VR experience. So I would think you would see a better experience going from 1080Ti to 3080.

But as others have stated, there is AMD release coming out so maybe they will deliver something that's attractive.

This looks very promising. Big improvements at high settings and 4K res which is what I was expecting when I hit the button on the 3090.

Yes!

All test available tell us that.

I’m not worried at all that it will be a good upgrade.

I will recommend to everyone thinking in pull the trigger to wait until October 28, AMD is going to show their new graphics cards and NVIDIA is going to announce the 3060TI and 3080 with more memory (this is a leak).

No need to try and wait because it's virtually impossible to get your hands on a 3080 or 3090 right now anyways.

I bought the most ugly version from some Indian card maker for 1000 euro's , and it wasn't even from a scalper but from an opportunistic hardware shop :(

Well at least i got one

Interesting. He didn't say what HMD he was using (I don't think). But the fact that 3090 let's you jack up SS w/o penalty is interesting.

Doesn't tell that much but here a benchmark 3090 vs 2080Ti with VR games (also DCS).

200% resolution scale and GPU isn't doing much in this benchmark (12-14%), CPU: 9900K starting @ 3:05:

The 2080ti is at like 85 %, and the 3090 at 70 % for the most time. But nevermind that, as the fps is locked to 45 look instead at the GPU frametime. The 2080ti is 20ish ms, and the 3090 is 15ish. I would have liked to see average frametimes as well as 99 % highs, but that isn't shown.

The CPU is at 14ish percent, but that's just because the 9900k is an 8 core CPU and DCS mostly uses only one of those.

It tells me a lot! It confirms that I am very happy to have hit the button on the 3090 which will be arriving in the next 10 days I am told.

The performance differences in that vid are huge. Some are a waste of time as he doesn't seem to be able to work out how to turn motion reprojection off in some games, including DCS.

I'm hoping the 3090 with the Pimax 8K-X I have on order will be the ultimate solution for DCS...can't wait to see someone get that combo and report back in the ED forums

Got my 3090 today and it really makes a difference. The most important feature are the 24GB VRAM for VR in DCS. I had the occasional stutter problem in MP sessions, mostly after switching aircraft where i already suspected that it breaks the 11GB barrier of my 2080ti. Now everything is pretty smooth at 2880x3200 per eye on the Index, most settings maxed out, even MSAA at 4x. No more stuttering, switching aircraft goes pretty fast (geometry and textures load sooo fast!). It's still throwing money at the problem, but this time i'm really happy how it works out.

Yup, in DCS in some cases it was saving like 4-5ms+ off the GPU frame times which is impressive. And really he seems CPU limited with the High settings.

He mentions at 11:45 that if you turned down the settings a bit from "high", that he could get 90fps with the 3090, which well, I can get with a 2080ti as well depending on settings and conditions. But that 4-5ms in GPU frame time reduction looks promising. Again, I guess it depends on headset which he didn't mention. But Steam 200% is gonna be a decent amount of pixels regardless.

I’ll get my 3090 with my new system either late next week or early the following week. I’ll be using it with the Rift S, but got an email from HP stating the G2 will ship in November for anyone who ordered prior to 9/24.

I ordered on 8/6.
