What VR headsets anticipated or rumoured to be coming out over the coming months are people most looking forward to, to compete with or replace what appear to be the two most popular at the moment - the G2 and the Quest 2? (I'm aware people are using other headsets, just as Pimax and Valve etc. but I get the feeling that the G2 and Quest 2 are the current headsets of choice for most people.)

I'm aware of the DecaGear and I've just heard rumours of a new HTC standalone headset for later this year. Are there any others?

For me, I really like the sound of the DecaGear. I like the clarity of the G2 but the value, convenience, software, ease of use and standalone portability of the Quest 2. If the DecaGear can combine the best of both of these, without the dreaded FB ties, it could be a real winner.

Well Quest 3 has been hinted at by Oculus, or a Quest Pro type version but who knows. I certainly would not look for anything from them this year as Quest 2 is so new.

I personally am hoping we see something new from Valve on the Index line.

HP was pretty quick on the Reverb G2, however much of it was fixing some weaknesses in the Reverb G1.

I hope they bring out a Reverb 3, but again I doubt we will see anything this year..

I think Oculus apparent dropping of the Rift line for the Quest mobile line maybe has some others re-evaluating.

Should be an interesting year for any VR news though.

Same here on the Index. Of the now 4 headsets I have purchased, the Index is the only one still running and it has been rock solid, no hardware issues at all. The main must-have I would look for in an Index 2 for DCS is to get rid of the screen door effect while mantaining a mura-free image. Nice to haves would be more resolution and an option to use camera tracking without base stations.

Valve Index 2 !!!

My G2 is currently out of order due to a hardware defect.

Waiting also for the Deca. Will decide after first impressions are in.

If the current valve index would just have higher res and less godrays I wouldn't even bother to look for something else.

This ^

It wouldn't be very difficult to offer a separate/optional face plate (Vive does it) for simmers who don't need lighthouse to track a controller while scratching their butts.

I am looking forward to anything that is not standalone... so much extra weight and heat on your face~

I think it's amazing that *everyone* is like "seriously just better Index with 10' more FOV and a bit more resolution is all I want", and every manufacturer (including Valve) is instead like, "Oh, you want brain waves? You want more resolution than a PC can drive? You want more FOV than is practical? Can we compromise on some aspect of image quality and comfort to get that for you? Great, we're on it!"

Fwiw - I have zero issues so far with the Reverb G2 and WMR/Steam VR.

Not to say others are not having issues and obviously several are which is a shame, just that there are some good experiences out there with the combination.

Yeah , i am aware of the implicit forum bias regarding problems , but the percentage of defective units on these and other forums seems high even accounting for that .

I actually built my system with the G2 in mind , but am being put off by the fact that HP can't seem to spec a cable .

Currently, like I mentioned, my G2 is dead due to, in my opinion, a defective cable.

Compared to valve, the hp customer service is sub par, which I think also of the headset and controller. Don't even get me started on WMR.

BUT I really miss the picture of the G2 and with a custom face mask the FOV is also Okish.

A lot of the griefs with hmds I believe is the poor vr performance of DCS. I would never think about other headsets or spending a lot of money on a cpu/GPU Update if I only would play e.g half life alyx. I don't miss anything with the index in half life, to the contrary, the hp controller suck big time there..... But anyhow, I'm just looking for the perfect DCS experience, so here we go, a lot of money need to be spend again, even if I hate it and my conscious mind tells me that I better open the window and throw the money out, so at least someone will be happy.....

IDK, currently I think the G2 will be the king of the hill for most simmers for the rest of the year. In terms of overall clarity its fine, it could do better optics wise/sweetspot wise and overall color depth wise, but it works pretty darn good IMO. It looks even better in MSFS than DCS though, at a severe gfx card cost.

I haven't really seen much in the way of real world news on higher PPD headsets and given the issues with performance with the reverb/vr in general I'm kinda doubting a ton of advancement there till GFX cards catch up, but then I think the current PPD is fine for now. I would now like to see the same ppd with a wider FOV/sweetspots and better color depth. Maybe the Index2 will adress some of that. I keep hoping that samsung delivers some sort of high end OLED RGB display that could be a game changer, but no real news on that front.

I'm hoping someone releases a non-Fresnel lens mod for the G2 like the ones I have in my Vive Cosmos Elite.

Yeah, that would be nice. I'd love to have better edge to edge vision with it, it is better than the G1 sort-of but still not great. But good glass=$$$

For me a G2 with wider FOV would be the ticket....

I haven't had any issues either but I zip tied my G2 cable to the headset like the G1. Still kept my G1 for back up just in case but so far smooth sailing (knock on wood)

To be honest the G1 was fine and although the G2 is a slight improvement visually for me the best thing about it is the headphone setup. Much nicer than the on the ear of the G1. I took those off and ran headphones.

Yeah that obviously is a nice improvement.

They weren't for me though, I run extended earbuds into my soundcard on PC and disabled and removed the G2 headphones.

I like total isolation of ambient noise.

I've thought about earbuds but could never find any with good enough bass ....what kind do you use?

I have no idea now - got them on Amazon back when I first got my Reverb.

Bass is decent though I would like it better - it is better than in the stock headphones though.

I will try and look through my Amazon purchases and find it.

Found it.

These were extended earbuds so the cord would reach back of my PC soundcard jack.

I think what we have currently on the market lags well behind the general graphics and computing power needed to run it properly anyway....it will be at least a year or two before mainstream systems catch up and the cutting edge systems can actually run current headsets at the settings they have available at the higher end......

Apple are supposed to be developing a high end headset out next year with eye tracking that is 8K resolution.

Its going to be a premium price between $1000-$3000, but loads of people around here seem to have RTX 3090's so money doesn't seem to be that much of an issue for some flight sim fans.

Mods I use: KA-50 JTAC - Better Fire and Smoke - Unchain Rudder from trim KA50 - Sim FFB for G940 - Beczl Rocket Pods Updated!

Processor: Intel Q6600 @ 3.00GHz

GPU: GeForce MSI RTX 2060 6GB

RAM: Crucial 8GB DDR2

HDD: 1TBGB Crucial SSD

OS: Windows 10, 64-bit

The real question is always how well it will run. Flight sims right now (not just DCS) suck at VR. I really don't know why, but MSFS and DCS are both dogs even with a 3090. Sure I can turn stuff down and they run, but still, every other title is like stable 90 on high settings. So unless apple has some magic goin on there (likely upscaling) then its gonna run bad. And really even a G2 reverb "looks" pretty good really even with turned down settings. I'm way more interested in terms of innovations for interacting with a cockpit.

I killed my cable that way and still wait for a replacement. Worked well from day one (stupid clip broke at first install) but developed a broken cable later on. Just check for bend marks and maybe think about fixing it a different way.
