So it seems that there might be improvement on Vista systems over XP (due to this and others chiming in on Vista systems that it does help), so I will have to do an install on Vista tonight to test this out, since my XP test on a quad core cpu showed no difference or improvement in fps. This might just be a feather in Vista's hat for once.

Don't forget to make a note of the performance on XP! This way we would get the first XP vs Vista comparison.

First test:

Intel Core Duo 6750. Nvidia 8800GT. 2 Gigas RAM 800 Mhz. NO GAINS AT ALL. Same FPS with dual or single core. ( Excellent FPS in my rig, 35-45 , best over 60, worst 15-20 )

OK, I just did a little informal test....Vista Home Premium 32 bit, Quad Core processor....I alt-tabbed out and set affinity to all 4 cores. Prior to this I was getting fps from a high of 40 to the low 20's over citys....now its closer to 50 in open terrain....but the big difference was over a city the fps stayed in the 40's....it did not drop like it did. Seems that this might be something worth looking into.

Gents,

At the risk of appearing really dumb I have no idea what this affinity thing your talking about is.

Could someone explain in very simple terms how you go about rying this please?

Thanks in anticipation

I hit control-alt-delete while game is running ( flying ) NOT MENU. I then select task manager, then processes...look for DCS.exe.. right click on it and select infinity...then make sure cpu0 and cpu1 are selected. go back and play game. I'm running vista ultimate 64bit. I personaly did not notice a change. I'm running the newest nvidia 180.48 whql drivers released yesterday.

Hi Gary.

This is for Window OSs XP and up.

Run BS and ALT+TAB back to the desktop and then press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

If given the option choose task manager, if not task manager will open.

If not selected choose the Processes tab and look for the BS executable.

If you can't find this easily go to the Applications tab and right click on BS and choose "go to process", this will then take you to the Processes tab and have the BS exe selected. If it doesn't find your BS short cut (on the computer, basically whatever you click on to run the game) and choose properties and look for the "Target" path under the short cut tab. The name of the exe is on the very end of the text string.

Back in Task Manager now select the BS executable and right click on it, you will then see a "set affinity" option. Click this and choose which core(s) you want it to use. If they have a cross or a tick in them they are active.

If you don't have a "Set Affinity" option chances are your on a single core CPU.

So is this something we have to set manaually?

There is no way to just make the game utilize mulitple cores by default without havng to ALT-TAB/CTRL-ALT-DLT out and set the affinity?

Here you go:

GPU is n7800GTX

Run on those settings on both systems, just hit the Instant Action or what and made few screens ... :

Can you get AA on? It will really help your visuals.

And if that CPU is anything like the Core 2 Quad (well it is technically) you can overclock it to 3GHz really easily, which is always going to help.

37 to 28 for Vista! :surprise:

The other way round isn't it? Vista got a higher performance with using both cores.

And that is with only 2GB in...now imagine if he had 4+GB memory handling would start plaing a bigger role.

Can only confirm on XP it is no or almost no increase of FPS

I ran the test on my Vista x64 Sp1 drive. Went into Instant Action, went into a hover. Waited about 30 sec and recorded FPS

1 core 27-28 FPS

2 cores 35-37 FPS

did the test again, same exact results. No added benefit using 3 or 4 cores.

I haven't installed it on my XP drive but I don't expect the results would be any different then what has already been reported
