Adamg1987 Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 Just been added in on the latest update, How do you use it?
_SteelFalcon_ Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 keybinds -> smoke generator on/off bind it somewhere to toggle it on and off

razo+r Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 You still need to add it to the aircraft by rearming the smokepod. But no, no switch in the cockpit for smoke.

Just curious, if there's no switch in the cockpit, how does Thunderbirds pilots enable and disable smoke in real life?

Perhaps they just select the smokewinders, switch master arm on and press weapons release button? I mean, they won't have live ammunition loaded while showing off probably.... There was a Thunderbird walk-around/cockpit tour video on Youtube I saw some time ago where the pilot explained the smoke was controlled by the DF Override switch. A similar video on the Blue Angels showed the smoke was controlled by the chaff/flare switch on the throttle. Edited July 31, 2022 by Jetguy06
TobiasA Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 Do not activate it on the ground. It will smoke the whole airport. Did it once by accident on our squad server and I swear if I hadn't have been given a callsign already, I'd now be called "smoker". 1 1
Rich-Doe Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 (edited) I hope they eventually do Smoke Winders for all compatible aircraft along with a curving vortex smoke effect. Edited August 17, 2022 by Rich-Doe 1

I asked Mace Curran (TBird Solo from 2019-2021) and she confirmed that it is the DF switch. Rig: intel i9-9900kf @ 1.21 gigawatts of electricity | Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro | EVGA 1080 Ti SC2 Gaming
Dragon1-1 Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Would be nice if it worked like that in DCS. If the Smokewinders are loaded, DF switch would toggle smoke.

If the Smokewinders are loaded, DF switch would toggle smoke. You still can define the DF switch to smoke (usually not with a single use DX key, but a keyboard press instead) . And just exchange smokewinders with "no sidewinders loaded, smoke pods loaded" and you are good to go.
Dragon1-1 Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 (edited) Actually, since DF switch automatically enables Sidewinder cooling, I wonder if Smokewinders are actually triggered by that. If the jet thinks it's got a pair of Sidewinders, then it would send a signal for them to start cooling once dogfight mode was on. Perhaps the Thunderbirds' jets aren't modified for that functionality, but just exploit what's already there. Edited October 25, 2022 by Dragon1-1 1

Interesting idea, but we would need to see evidence of that. thanks 2 Forum rules - DCS Crashing? Dragon1-1 Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 Well, a Thunderbirds smoke generator isn't exactly a classified military tech, so perhaps a FOIA request could help. Although, I can imagine the people on the receiving end going "how should we know, any why would anyone want to know about that, anyway?" Maybe if the way the wingtip pylons are wired isn't classified, one could obtain info on how the Smokewinder plugs in, to see if it uses the lines that trigger Sidewinder cooling. 1
nws9140 Posted October 29, 2022 Posted October 29, 2022 Besides me, has anyone else noticed the smoke dissipates a lot quicker than before the update? For example, before the update, I was able to do a full loop with the smoke on and you would be able to see the entire loop before it disappeared and now it seems like the smoke disappears 30ft behind the jet. Was wondering how to "restore" to previous smoke if that makes sense. Thank you in advance.

Is there any way to increase the smoke duration?
Ladan Posted May 7 Posted May 7 Hey all, just got caught up on this topic. So, is this air show smoke a mod I need to download or something, or does it already have, and needs to be activated? Really would love to use it.

You just equip it in the rearming window and use the dedicated smoke keybind to de/activate it. 1

So as mentioned earlier then : keybinds -> smoke generator on/off bind it somewhere to toggle it on and off add it to the aircraft by rearming the smokepod
Ladan Posted May 8 Posted May 8 (edited) Y'all, the smoke was amazing! Holy smokes! The white doesn't show up as well as the orange and yellow. I have not tried the red, green and blue yet. Is there a density setting to make the light colors show up more? The white one needs it most imho. I really had a great time with it though. Thank you for helping me in activating it. I have a key bind set, but thinking to use a joystick button instead. Edited May 8 by Ladan
Ladan Posted May 12 Posted May 12 By the way, is there a way to change smoke colors on the fly? I have seen this done in air shows. I have been searching for this, but couldn't find anything about it.
