You should - still struggling to find a 4090 for myself.

Newegg has been having a good amount of drops. If you haven't already, join a discord or nowinsktock telegram for notifications. Alternatively, you can try the best buy app trick to see if there's one in your local stores that's not showing up online u can get.

In the last week I've been able to get 3. I got an FE from best buy with the app trick, that one is going to my brother, I got me the gigabyte a day after that from Newegg, and an MSI trio for a coworker yesterday. They're starting to pop up, but still sell out stupid fast.

Yeah I have been checking Best Buy as well, just checked again and it had a "buy now" button so thinking allright finally. Denied - clicked on buy now and then got an out of stock message.

Sorry to be a pain, but I’ve just put the 4090 into my (brand new) machine and installed the latest drivers. Is that all I need to do? Is there anything else I need for tuning the card or should it be good to go right out the box?

Sorry for the simpleton questions.

i would recommend setting an 80% power target through MSI afterburner or Asus gputweak III, it should reduce your power draw by about 100w and cost you a tiny percentage impact in performance... i mean the difference between 170 and 168 FPS in a game ... for example .

that said, the coolers on these things are vast (way beyond what is needed for the voltage you can drive to the card)... so it is the coldest GPU i have run in some time (FE)

I would run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) even if you're coming from an Nvidia GPU. Then do fresh install of new drivers. Make sure you select "block automatic windows driver installation" in DDU settings until you manually install new drivers.

Make to run DDU while in safe mode.

Looking at it now, I’m pretty sure you could fit a small to medium size iceberg in there with room left for a couple of confused penguins.

Thanks for the tip, but I’ve already installed the drivers. 😬 it’s the first gpu that’s ever been in there so it should be fine, right? 🤞

This for sure - bit of a pain but I do it with every new GPU I get.

Probably, yes. My only reservation would be if windows tried to install drivers for it. But if you did the fresh install it's probably fine.

I’m hopeful that that didn’t happen, downloading the drivers from Nvidia was the first thing I did after turning it on, fingers crossed. 🙂

I had a go with it last night, WOW!

No mods, no FSR/NIS, SS @ 100% (G2) I’ve even been able to turn flat terrain shadows on (I’m still on 2.7) and have better performance than on the 3090 and with much better visuals.

I’ve been flying the Harrier on the Apache Training Ground mission (Syria) at a solid 90fps at 20 feet agl with the tgp on! I did have to turn MSAA off to make sure it stayed at 90fps down low over big cities but honestly I do t notice much difference where as I always noticed the shimmering before. I think having no upscaling makes a big difference there.

Anything with a radar and the cpu frame times can hinder reaching 90fps down low at least. That being said on the F14 Syria free flight instant action I had 90fps by about 10,000ft. I haven’t seen 90fps in the Apache (Syria, Apache Training Ground again) but still, it’s a rock solid 45fps and you can really turn up the eye candy

On the Spitfire/Channel instant action A8 Dogfight, with my 3090 I had a GPU frame time of 20+ms with the 4090 it is 11ms. Holy Sh….

A 4090 with the upcoming multithreading and I reckon we’re sorted, For a while at least, as cpu frame times are the main problem now. Thank heavens that it looks like that’s gonna be this year.

Something I observed was OpenXR is very stingey in handing out 90fps if you have motion smoothing on. With it on I was always at 45, turned it off and it was mostly 90fps. Going to try Steam VR next as I have a feeling that it’s a better option if you are between 90 and 45 fps.

So to my past self I say: Bloody hell yes, it’s worth it! I’m very happy indeed, and it cost “only” £1700.

I am not even going to tell y'all what I have been through all day today trying simply to get this new card put in my machine. Oh I had plenty of room for it, have a huge full tower case. Let's just stay it started out with me totally locking myself out of Windows, had to go the the Windows 11 forums on my iPhone, and get some help. Finally got some help and got it restarted into safe mode and proceeded from there. And that was just the first hour, took me well over 3 hours to finish and be good again with the new card it. That was the short version.

Card is running great, at idle with zero fan speed it maintains 45 degrees C. Very impressive. No time for further testing, after all I had been through today I needed a break so had a relaxing dinner in with my wife and we watched a movie. I will get started fresh in the morning with some Spitfire flying in the Channel Map. If this baby runs at 2.5 GHz and maintains a decent temperature like I think it will, I am going to be pleased I think.

Not sure what this MOAR is ?

Btw before going to bed last night I ran a TimeSpy benchmark. She is boosting to 2805 MHz and the warmest it got during the run was 58c. Now I will take that! By comparison my 3090 boosted to 2100 MHz and high temp of 70c during same benchmark run.

Will be resuming my Spit flying on the Channel Map later today and hopefully start The Big Show campaign. Am hoping for at least a somewhat decent improvment in performance.

i upgraded from a 3080 to a 4090 a couple of weeks ago, it's a huge difference, sometimes 100% more FPS with my Reverb G2. It still struggles sometimes especially on maps like the channel and the marianas.

I am confident that with vulkan and multithread support we can get a very smooth vr performance, I hope this is a bit of an endgame regarding constant upgrading to get decent vr performance.

Just finished the paradise lost campaign with the huey on preset high settings, it’s a dream, it struggles in busy environments but it’s doable. It’s was unplayable with my 3080.

That’s what I think too, after almost 7 years since the cv1 and always having to compromise and wondering if the next gpu was going to be the answer. And each time being quietly disappointed that compromise was still the name of the game

At last we seem to be approaching the point where there’s no reason not to play VR. Well apart from the eye watering cost, but maybe that’s why we have 2 kidneys 😉

What are we going to spend our money on now? Ah yes, energy bills!

(Disclaimer: I may be a little over excited)

I too have a 4090 which i LOVE, but the one thing that's still missing is a really great interface to the cockpit controls.  I have a pointctrl, and it's by far the best way to go, but what I really want is a glove with haptic feedback in the fingertips (index and thumb would be enough) so that i can reach out (hand tracking) and "feel" the buttons and dials!

In the meantime, I'll keep working on building my motion seat:)

I’d love to have something like that, I have mfds but it isn’t the same thing. What you describe would be next level.

But to be honest I reckon if someone sat me in the cockpit of a real F18 (for example) and asked me to use the ddis I’d instinctively reach for my mouse hehe.

The ability, or not, to interact with the cockpit as a reason not to go VR is one I’ve never understood. It really doesn’t take long to get used to if your mouse is always in the same place. I know that’s not what you’re saying here,  Ive just heard it many times. 🙂

Well if you have a 4090, it has to double as space heater so you can afford to play...

I'd say that is true for the 3090, but not so much for the 4090.  Nothing scientific, but it is winter here, yet I don't need to close the vent and open the window when gaming hard with the 4090.  It does put out some good heat, but not near as much as my 3090.

Yep my 4090 runs much cooler than my 3090 ever did. Nvidia did a good job with the cooling of these behemoths.
