I wondered about this, as they are talking about «mountain hangars» and not the hardened aircraft shelters. Bodø has traditional large maintenance hangars, but there is also a large underground hangar complex called «anlegg 96». The complex can fit a whole squadron of aircrafts and was intentionaly designed, during the cold war, to withstand nuclear attacks.
I'd love the underground ones too,. Do you know how deep they were dug, as you can't go below sea level in DCS. As all landmass has sea under it in the current engine.

Cheers!

I don't think they are at lower level than the other movement-surfaces, right because of the sea-level
I don't follow. Bodø airbase lies 13m above MSL. If they've dug the tunnels deeper it won't work in DCS.

Cant say I know how deep it goes, but I guess the hill on top over the enterence to the complex could be used.

News from BD (on Facebook) about the new campaign which will be released together wirh the Kola Map:

After long discussions and deliberations, together with Reflected Simulations we're happy to announce the name for our upcoming campaigns which will be released together with the Kola map:

ARCTIC THUNDER

As a reminder: they will be set in 2023, where NATO forces fend off Russian attack against Finland. Many missions will be intertwined which means you will experience the same situation seen from the cockpit of US Viper (Reflected) or Finnish Hornet (BD) as parts of the same strike package - or just flying separate sorties at the same time.

Release date of course depends on the pace of the development of the map itself, but we're working closely with Orbx to have everything we need for good set of missions implemented at the release. Stay tuned for more information!

Now we're going to need Russian "trawlers"
Sailing on their "fishing" missions.

Yeah, they do look very nice and I'm somehow getting even more excited for this map.

My only gripe so far is that the mountains look fairly angular, but I'm sure that'll be cleaned up on release.

Me too.
I had an incredible time when I played EF2000 Typhoon on the scandanavia map by DID back in the days.

It would sure be looking much more better than what was available in EF2000 back then considering the fact that Orbx are well renowned for map making and the quality of the software technology available currently in making maps.

This map and both Arctic thunder campaigns are a no-brainer purchase from me upon release. I hope the fjords will be visually better represented than in South Atlantic map. We also need Typhoon class submarines (Akula). A good way to learn about them is to read books by Eduard Ovechkin (former submarine officer stationed on Kola peninsula).

There's a lot of submarine classes that were or still are stationed around the area (in the process of making my .kmz I've come across a lot of them).

Though less related to the map itself, going with a ballistic missile submarine is probably a poor choice given the total lack of ASW and the fact DCS is staying away from nuclear weapons. A better candidate would probably be SSGs and SSGNs - Juliet, Echo I/II, Charlie I/II and Oscar I/II (all of which were/are stationed in the region) as they will be more relevant to the kind of warfare DCS can currently simulate (even if there's still massive limitations there). Personally though, I'd prefer more Soviet/Russian surface combatants, such as the Sovremenny guided missile destroyer.

Not bad if ORBX build a assets team with a "NATO/Russia Pack" to Kola map. Meanwhile, ORBX has building a modern "2020" Kola map, not a 1988 aka "Red Storm" Kola map.

About Thypoon class, that was always a minority on soviet and russian northem fleet.
- 1988 scenery.

  • 5 Project 941 Akula [Typhoon] SSBN + 2 on building (1 scraped on 1990) (All on Northem fleet)
  • 5 Project 667BDRM Delfin [Delta IV] SSBN + 2 on building (All on Northem fleet)
  • 14 Project 667BDR Kalmar [Delta III] SSBN (7 Northem fleet / 7 Pacific fleet)
  • 4 Project 667BD Murena-M [Delta II] SSBN (All on Northem fleet)
  • 18 Project 667B Murena [Delta I] SSBN (10 Northem fleet / 8 Pacific Fleet)
  • Some Project 667A Navaga [Yankie] SSBN (on decomised or convert on SSGN / others)

- 2023 scenery (more plausible)

  • 3 Project 955A Borey [Borey II] SSBN + 4 on building (1 Northem Fleet / 2 Pacific Fleet)
  • 3 Project 955 Borey [Borey I] SSBN (1 Northem Fleet / 2 Pacific Fleet).
  • 6 Project 667BDRM Delfin [Delta IV] SSBN (All on Northem fleet)

Great to see new screenshots, and having been to Norway recently I can atest to the weather in that region, but to show off the detail of the product and help sales, why not show the map in nice weather, rather than sunset, sunrise, night time and rain!! 😆
