Frankly in a dogfight he is useless, because his audio is canned files, he seems to have to play them in order, which puts him way behind where everything is at, he's even called out bandits as if they're at 6 o'clock, after I've had them in the gunsight and have shot them, then made several other calls, and then finally caught up.

If anything he is a distraction and the opposite of useful, his audio is frankly wrong.

So would it be possible to make him only say something maybe 1/4 as often as he does, so that the audio can complete quicker, or even stop the audio with a short burst of radio static and skip ahead if he gets too far behind.

Jester Menu, Crew Contract, Shut-up. (or maybe it's just "stop talking" 🙂 )

I'm not updating this anymore. It's safe to assume I have all the stuff, and the stuff for the stuff too. 🙂

I haven't had the same issue.  My issue comes more from being in unusual attitudes and not knowing what "4 oclock high" means when I am 50 degrees nose up and rolled 130 degrees to the right.  I often need more speed readings that he gives, especially when I have tally.  This is where I would ideally like (such as I would in MP with a human RIO) the ability to say "Tally" so my RIO can go to speed, altitude, and fuel calls and wait for me to say "Lost him" to go back to position readouts.

Then you don't get speed callouts, which are a necessity for fighting from a gaming chair.

I don't want to shut him up completely, but just a bit, he talks way too much, which leads to a lag between what's actually happening and what he's saying is happening, it really doesn't help when in the middle of a dogfight he says stupid stuff like "oh look candy", or "pew pew pew", it's a bit of useless encouragement that adds nothing to the tactical situation, and that I do find really hard to believe would have been allowed to be done IRL, it would be really unproffesional and would likely lead to bad outcomes.

Those useless sound files will only lead to more lag as they have to complete too.

What does your gaming chair have to do with it?

Also, how did you manage, before we got the Jester speedcalls?

I mean it’s subjective opinion , but „necessity“?No. Nice to have? Yes.

Real pilots know how much G they are pulling and roughly how fast they are going by physical feedback in a real jet. We don't have that physical feedback, which necessitates other feedback like sound effects, visual effects, or in this case RIO callouts. We also aren't chameleons who can keep one eye on the speed gauge and another eye 120° to the left on the bandit.

I didn't. See above explanation.

Yes, I've always been curious about that. Does Jester make calls based on the plane's orientation?

I wonder if this will all be addressed with Jester 2.0? I love Jester and all of the work that the devs has put into him. Though I would like the ability to "customize" him in some ways. Such as:

  • The ability to tell Jester to "be professional" to stick to simple, clear information calls, to "be himself" which would allow for all of his callouts, or even to "be dramatic" which would limit most of his calls to ones with attitude or nonsense.
  • The ability to tell Jester to limit his callouts during a dogfight to speed only, to bandit position only, or to speed and bandit position only. Alongside "emergency" callouts like "missile inbound" and "we're hit."
  • The ability to customize the format of callouts. For example, a speed callout could be limited to simple numbers: "320," "480," "550"... not something like: "155... we're getting too slow" or "600... we're going ballistic!" As another example, bandit position callouts could be limited to simple time positions: "1 o'clock," "3 o'clock low," "11:30," or "6 o'clock high"... not something like: "Dead ahead" or "he's on our six!"
  • The ability to set the rate for certain callouts like speed or bandit positioning. For example, in the first part of this message, a single "4 o'clock high" may not be enough information in a maneuvering dogfight. Jester may need to "walk" the pilot to the bandit in quick succession, especially if the relational maneuvering is quickly changing (on a [re]merge).

Again, I love Jester and all of the information he brings. But he does exist to assist the pilot, not necessarily to entertain him. While I'm happy that he does both, we are dealing with a computer/AI. Being able to take advantage of that, and turning him more into an automated information source instead of an actual jester, could be very, very helpful sometimes.

Has anyone found a keybind for Jester Stop/Start talking which could be added with Quaggle's? Sometimes in the middle of a fight he's a real PIA telling me what to do.

"I will fire when I'm (expletive) good and ready! You got that? "

Opening up the menu in the middle of a dogfight isn't really feasible.

Cheers

All the bindable commands should be in "DCS World\Mods\aircraft\F14\Cockpit\command_defs.lua"

The ones I would experiment with are:

{down = device_commands.JESTER_Quiet, cockpit_device_id=devices.JESTERAI, value_down = 1, name = _('Jester Quiet'), category = _('Quaggles Custom')},
{down = device_commands.JESTER_Pause, cockpit_device_id=devices.JESTERAI, value_down = 1, name = _('Jester Pause'), category = _('Quaggles Custom')},

Then maybe make a duplicate command with value_down = 0 to disable quiet mode? Or maybe try using JESTER_SPOT to make him talk again?

{down = device_commands.JESTER_Spot, cockpit_device_id=devices.JESTERAI, value_down = 1, name = _('Jester Spot'), category = _('Quaggles Custom')},

This is exactly what I needed. Many, many thanks for this, and for all your brilliant work on the input injector. You improve the game immensely!

True, there are days when a boring Jester would be the better Jester. It would be cool if we could choose it situational. Just like in real life when you would tell him "please, not today".

I mean it is funny and feels a bit less AI, but if you heared the Dale Earnhardt, Morgan Freeman, Illuminati stuff long enough, it gets a bit annoying.

I only fool around the F-14 - and still having a hard time on it as there is so much to learn and so little time and talent. But I love it.

Just set him to no talking, problem solved. I personally have no problem with how jester is right now.

No, that's not problem solved, there should be something between STFU Jester, and non-stop jibber jabber.

When you get enough time in the Tomcat, you tend to get a feel for what your speed and G is and no need to rely on Jester to tell you.  But I agree that his clock code calls are useless.

I would also like to know if he's chaffing.  The logic as i know it is if he can see the missile, he will chaff.  But I want to know if he is, can he just say "Chaffing?"  Also, can he chaff anyway when there is a radar lock on us, not just when he sees the missile?

Maybe you should switch to the hornet if it bothers you that much. They’re more serious in that part of the community anyway.
