CH47 Engineer Stations and walking to them (VR)

I found one of the coolest functions flying last night I have not seen anyone discuss, walking to each station in the Chinook as the Engineer.  If you press right Ctrl + [ or }, the Engineer will walk to the hoist station or the ramp control/cabin lights station at the rear of the helo.  Right now, in the options it looks like there are other stations he can walk to, but only 3 (including the default) are available for the time being.

I was going to ask ED or Bignewy if the WASD keys were ever considered for a free walk around the Chinook, but to be honest, this works fantastic in VR.  I plan on doing some more videos with the guys later over the Marianas.  The below video demonstrates what I am talking about.  It is a crazy feeling in VR when you are walking towards the pilots in flight.  Good stuff!

Nice find! Hopefully the front doors will become functional along with the ramp controls as the Chinny moves through early access.

Agreed! Quick note, if you bind the ramp lower/raise key to something on your joystick, or however it works best for you, you can raise/lower it will standing at the back as the engineer.  Pretty cool to do in flight.

So I finally figured out the majority of what you can do with the Engineer utilizing the cargo hook.  Slightly longer video but I go through the key binds and process from start to finish hooking, transitioning, and dropping the cargo.  All done in VR.  Pretty trippy looking through the trapdoor in VR at your cargo swinging below.  Looking forward to when ED implements the Coop so we can actually have someone flying and the other as the engineer.

Anyone worked out how to CLOSE the trap door?

I’ve got it to open and found the extra view position looking out of the trap door with a sling load attached…..but can’t seem to close the trap door again, once the load is released……

I’ve opened and closed it with the same button.

Yeah, not working for me. The only button is a toggle - open/close. Maybe I bugged it out of sequence somehow.

Having said that, I hadn’t picked up a load in between opening and closing it so who knows, may be bugged or not finished yet?

Great find @Devil 505. I haven't heard or seen anything about this before. Bad PR by ED because this is the type of features I look for in modules. Need something like this in the SuperCarrier. Hopefully this is the first fruits of walking up to the aircraft.🤞🏾 Thank you ED for adding this.

If you look at the keys I bound mine to in the video, I have the open/close bound to one key.  The kicker is, you need to hold it down to open and the same to close it. Promise it works! If you just click it, it will not open right up.  My assumption is, it is simulating the open of each latch.  You can see each latch being pulled up in the bottom left and right corner when you open it.

I would say in ED's defense (I cannot prove this) is maybe its not fleshed out and in a state where they wanted to show it off, but it's implemented to a degree. Super cool function though.  I will do a few more videos soon.  I will do one on loading the dynamic cargo soon.  Pretty cool stuff.  As this module progresses, the guys and I have some cool ideas for our Coop Vietnam experince we will put out there for everyone.

I should’ve thought.

I have it bound to one of the grey press-buttons on the WH throttle. Same as Devil explains, press and hold it I think brought it back down.

Can you "suggest" movement to Bob (with Bob engaged of course) from the Flight Engineer position while standing at the trap door?

Not to be mean my friend but I am trying to figure out what you are asking.  Are you playing in desktop mode or VR?  I only play in VR, so even though Engineer stations 1, 2, and 3 are static, in VR I can look around everywhere and zoom in when/where as needed.  I am not sure how it is in desktop mode, but I would assume if you had the cursor activated, you can hit ctrl + c and deactivate the cursor and look around with the mouse.  Hope this helps.

I am in VR.

I just went onto our server and tried my idea out.

You can control the aircraft from the flight engineers hook position. There are also TWO positions at the hook, one standing over it, and one with your head in the hole.

With BOB enabled control is greatly stabilized, I can gently control the aircraft with my stick. Forward and backward are obvious, right is rotate a/c right, left is rotate a/c left, collective tells Bob to lower or raise the a/c. I have not found if we can translate left or right over the cargo, so it's a dance of turns and forwards and backwards to get over it.

You can also enable the Cargo Indicator, and it will show you where you are over the cargo so you can submit the right stick inputs to get over it, I was in perfect position to lift, but was too high, so I lowered my collective a bit, and Bob started to descend, and my hook attached, I pulled up on the collective, and we got tension, then lift. And off we went.

Oh and by the way…the yellow emergency manual release handle does work in the trap door position….so that’s cool. And the hook is animated.

There are also 3 ‘hook lights’ that are controlled from the same position. They work.

Unfortunately the radar altimeter doesn’t yet work.

Still couldn’t close the trap door, even holding the button. I’ll try again today. (I’m thinking now that playing with the emergency release lever may have blocked the trap door from closing?)

When I tried it I was stood over the trap while flying it. I didn’t try letting Bob have a go.

How are you moving from the standing position to poking your head out Antix?

I think if the trap door is open, it adds another position

There isn’t a lot of room for running in a B-17 Mike. I’d love a flyable one though.

I paid about £3 years ago for a look around Sally B. Me and a mate stood at the side gunners positions and you’re pretty much back to back, only the positions are a bit staggered so that you’re not. If that makes sense? The tail gunner doesn’t have a lot of room though he’s not as buried in there as a Lancs rear gunner.

I think ED should hurry up and sort us out a full fidelity B-17. Scoobys team are tinkering away on the Lanc already so ED need to get their finger out. 🙂

I did the same thing in my home town on one of the Now only 3 still in America B-17s As a child dreaming of getting inside of one. With my Son age 9 at the time. He stood at a side gun station and was about (still a bit short) the size of a Movie gunner at the station. I was 6' and 190 lbs and was shocked how small the Aircraft was. I walked over the Bombay doors(closed) like walking the plank "SO SMALL" I could only look into the Pilot station I don't think I could of fit through the door opening. My Dreams feel to the shocking reality of How far they flew in so much danger to drop Bombs so young and were the Tallest Smallest Men that ever Lived.

if the ramp is down on the ch47, can an ejected pilot walk up it and be transported?  and would the mission editor recognize the ejected pilot unit being moved to a zone for example?
