I don't use mirrors in DCS because they don't look good in DCS with VR.

I wish they were better but I can't fly without them.

Can we pull the mirrors down but with a static reflection/reflective surface?

The animated mirrors are:

1. FPS hungry
2. Poor picture quality/resolution

RB, Heatblur and other developers has solved this by having a generic reflective surface when mirrors are not activated.
Will this also be available for MiG-29?

I guess I have to ask why? The generic reflective material is pretty ugly. If the performance is not great with mirrors for you, then you just fold them up, and they do not render. (Try not to judge too much by the dev video, I see much better frames than this).

2) We will have resolution settings for mirrors coming; you will be able to pick the resolution you want, much like cockpit resolutions. We will also have a render option as well, either sequential or not.

It’s not normal to fly with the mirrors folded up. But it’s currently the only way unless we want to take a heavy FPS hit and deal with low quality rendering in the mirrors. So the static reflection adds a bit of immersion for those who don’t use the mirror rendering.

I have played DCS with a large group for over 10 years and none of them has the mirrors turned on in any aircraft. The tradoffs vs gain is simply too high. Would it be nice to be able to enjoy MiG-29 without the look of folded-up mirrors? Yes.

I’ll guess we have to wait for the mirror improvements. But it has to be at least double the performance and visual quality from current standard to be worth it (in my opinion). Anyways, it’s just my take on the topic.

I am in VR testing the MiG-29A constantly, I am not seeing any FPS issue using mirrors, and they look good to me, but I suppose we all have our own preferences and tolerances. I would suggest you give them a go however once you get your hands on it.

thanks

There is undeniably a fps-hit when using mirrors in DCS. Maybe you don't notice it in VR because you are over the treshold of fixed fps with your HMD with and without mirrors.
It can become a problem when a user JUST reaches the needed fps without mirrors.

Anyways. The mirror-issue in DCS is twofold...

- the performance hit (which is probably unavoidable)
- the visual implementation (on and off), which is hit and miss across all modules (ED and third party). In VR this is even more noticeable.

I prefer Mirrors off and I appreciate it very much when the "off" graphics still looks good and are not just a black hole. (foldable mirrors are also neat).

Actually it is quite normal. Pilots rarely use mirrors in flight. Only used in leading formations or BFM.

Then again it all comes down to preference and needs depending on the situation. And if sun is behind, it can blind pilot in certain angles.

Airshow is not "normal" case either.

Forget the mirrors, what happened with SPO-15? (there was influencer video stating ED made statements in relation to SPO-15)

I hope Eagle Dynamics can clarify where they found evidence in the first place. Don't trust source from wartime mig-29 in 1999. As those were not maintained, nor updated as they were supposed to be in 1996 !

Will that be explained for those of us who don’t have a degree in computer graphics?

Does that mean we’ll have depth perception when looking in the mirrors?

My guess it's simply "every frame" or not, as it is already.

That’s just gonna make em look choppier, ruining the immersion.

It’s ok, it is what it is. Just wish that ED would be more considerate when it comes to adding options. And don’t even get me started on the non-adjustable NVG mask sizing/placement 🙂
