Completed the tutorial numerous times successfully.

However if I add the Essex CVN to mission editor and fly a mission the corsair wont catch a wire?

Any clues anyone?

The ATC doesn't appear to be working at this stage but is it because I haven't requested to land properly?

Did you assign any frequency to the carrier? And have you set the appropriate frequency into one of the preset channels of your radio?

Also there should be no difference between training mission and your own mission. Are you 100% certain your tail is on the deck so the hook has a chance to catch a wire? Requesting a landing is not necessary for that.

Make sure you drop the landing gear first, then the hook. Hook won't come down unless the gears down.

Yeah hook is definitely down. I've caught the wire on every attempt in the training mission, done it about 6 times now. Just getting different results from my created miz I'll have another look and go through things again and Try the radio freqs

Thanks all.

Feel free to attach a track so we can see exactly what is going on.

Started a new build mission, carrier only this time its working fine.

Bit puzzled I think something in the conditions or an asset or something in my original mission is causing a bug, trying to pinpoint it but so far haven't found the culprit. Thought it may be wind as I know setting wind speeds effects ILS on Caucasus but doesn't appear to be this.

Anyway created a new mission and its ok now so far.

I have a problem like this. I was able to trap just fine in the training mission, which is on the Caucasus map. I built a mission in 1944 Marianas and was never able to trap on that in several tries. Same with a mission I tried on the Normandy map. Finally I built a mission on Caucasus myself and I was able to trap first try. Something funny is up, I find it hard to believe no one has been able to trap on the other two maps I mention?

I'm having the same problem. Hot start on the CV, request landing, atc answered, LSO talked to me behind the boat...hook is down. But, I have done pass after pass in the last hour (many of them quite respectable) and can't catch a single wire. Bolter, bolter, and bolter again. The odds seem against missing the wires that many times in a row.

Here is one of the best reference videos I have ever seen landing the Corsair on carriers narrated from the British pilots who flew her.  Going to use this as a guide to start landing her in DCS.  Highly recommend the watch.  Great footage.

This is hands down the best interview/documentary I have seen on the Corsair. 100% worth the watch start to finish.  Do not cheat yourself.  The last story about the British pilot that ditched in the sea and was picked up by a US submarine was worth the wait.  Total honor to listen to these pilots.

What I took from it for DCS corsair on the landing is this.  Best approach in the Corsair on a carrier is the turning approach.  As your wings are coming level with the ship, you should be pretty much one wheel or both close to the deck.  When wings level cut the throttle completely. Sounds like a 3-point landing almost.  Touch down speed from what the pilots said was 88 to 90 knots. Through a little research total speed over the deck was 28 to 30 knots (need to adjust this in the mission editor.  I find a balance between wind speed and Essex Speed). Something I want to try is lifting the tail on takeoff with the brakes applied as stated in the video.

Highly recommend listening to these pilots and trying this out in DCS.  I will do the same and post a video here.  Something else I noticed in the footage was it appeared most Corsairs on deck were launching with cowl flaps closed.  I will try this a keep an eye on the temps.  Looked like they all had them open on landing.  I assume this helps with two things, reducing speed and heat.  The other thing I noticed in the footage was on what appeared to be on the break, they were already in full landing configuration with flap, gear, hook down.  Not sure if these were wave offs in the video or the proper approach.  A lot of good stuff in that video.  Look forward to hearing the comments on it.

Really very interesting video, thanks a lot : " she was a delightful airplane to fly, it really was although it looked heavy. In the air it lost all its weight"

This is interesting. I have not been able to hook the cable at all using the instant action on Mariannas, but if I fly the training missions which Caucasuses I had no issue hooking the cable.

Makes you wonder if it is some how map related.

...it's probably not. I can land on the carrier in my self-created mission on Marianas WW2 without any problems.

Whatever you do, make sure the carrier is in the wind and there is at least 20 to 25kts of wind over the deck. If you have to slow down too much on approach and line up, the plane will get very unstable. The higher the speed you can keep, the easier it is to handle. :pilotfly:

good point.  I'm editing my Carrier mission to now have the wind at +20kts.  I had it at 10kts, but I have the Essex moving at 27kts.

on the first 3 attempts, all were bolter's.  The 4th I managed to snag a wire and got a C rating.   I'll give it a whirl with the increased wind.

I used wind @12kt and for the carrier 18kt. Did work fine.

I am trying to land on the carrier now on the new WW2 Marianas map.  Hit the deck at the right speed and angle I feel to trap a wire and keep missing.  Have two recording of it.  About to try a third time and will record again.  Are you guys calling inbound before the trap? I have not done that and will try on this next attempt.  I am also trying it the aforementioned way the Brits did it in the video.  Works well, just cant seem to snag the wire.

Make sure the boat is heading into the wind... 15kts on the boat, 10 - 15 knots of wind.

I've tried to make a mission on the Caucasuses to see if that was the issue and I could not get a hook engagement on there as well.

I've tried both calling inbound and also not. Didn't seem to make a difference. I have a 0% boarding rate in my user missions, but using the missions that came with the plane give me no issues. Also I've noticed that if I use a super carrier that I can trap on that with no issues as well, so I don't think it's my just ok approaches.

Contacting the Essex via radio is not required to trap.

And I am still having issues with this which appear to be map based. I can now trap consistently on the caucuses training mission and a caucuses mission I created myself, but the hook does not seem to interact with the wires on Marianas, I haven't had a single trap there.

One thing I've noticed is that once hitting the deck I really pull back on the stick to plant the tail and ensure it catches a wire. at 90kn it wants to be up on 2 wheels and I wonder if that has the hook passing too high? Haven't had a close look on external view to see whats going on
