The Gryphon Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago Hi all! I have been playing DCS for 5 years on a 2D-monitor. Today I bought the Quest 3S, jumped into DCS and was completely blown away! DCS is a completely DIFFERENT game in VR, not only that you are suddenly sitting inside the cockpit, all the proportions is completely different! I have never liked or enjoyed the A-10C, but now I am IN LOVE with the A-10! This bird is HUGE in VR and the cockpit is sooo beautiful! I also jumped into the P-47 and ohh man, let me tell you, if you enjoy warbirds, you are teleported back 50 years inside the real P-47 and it looks NOTHING like on a 2D monitor! The thing is I am running a pretty crappy home computer, RTX 3080, 32 GB Ram, I5 and the most simple VR-headset a Quest 3S for 300 dollars, I am getting a solid 40-60 FPS in singleplayer even on Normandy map. This is the best spent 300 dollars in my entire life, I am NEVER going to play DCS without a VR-headset again, just doing some simple flying is 10x more fun then before 11

Yeah everything has been running smooth with a stable 50 FPS in singleplayer until I tested multiplayer , then everthing crashed. But I think it is because I am running my Metaquest 3 /steamlink with Wifi, and they stronlgy recomend using a internet-cable, so down to the store tomorrow to buy a cable

Let me tell you I just did a barrel-roll with my F-18 in DCS and I almost throw up! I tried to pull 7G and it was to much, I started to feel light-headed and a bit dizzy, if that's not immersion I don't know what is! 1

skywalker22 Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago Indeed, VR is next level. I have Quest PRO, but still for some more serious flying I still use TrackIR, and thats because of head turning. I just can't turn as much or as fast or even that often in VR as with TrackIR. Else, experience in VR is stunning indeed. The only complaint is that the graphics are still not as sharp in VR yet. I have VR for almost 3 years now, constantly trying to tweak and use any kind of trick there is, but still missing that image sharpness which we can have with a 2d monitor. Maybe this vr headset that I use (or any other which are available atm), are just not good enough yet. But anyway, user experience is another level. I also want to point out that I drive car racing sims (Le Mans Ultimate atm), where the images seems to be way sharper and clearer then in DCS, and also the whole experience seems to be better just because of that. And with the same VR settings for both games (in openXR toolkit and Oculus Try Tool). In LMU I just can't drive cars in 2d anymore. Anyway, enjoy VR, I know love it.

I've been flying exclusively in VR for many years now, and I can't imagine doing it any other way. 2D and TrackIR are just a substitute. With VR, you're much closer to reality, and nothing can replace it. On my first left turn after the very first take off in VR I swore the whole house moved. No kidding. But (spoiler) this fades away rather quickly. A human brain gets used to almost everything I guess. The feeling to be inside an aircraft high up in the clouds stayed.

But you will notice the differences in performance of certain birds and or maps. Flying the Hornet on NTTR is easy für your setup but sitting in the Phantom over Germany is pretty hard work for your GPU. Maybe you will find yourselfe investing in some serious expensive equipment soon. VR is a gamechanger but also a rabbit hole. If its true the 5080 Super gets 24 GB of VRAM the next thousands will be dumped from my wallet. 1
