I'm not as confident as you are, that it will be released in late May, but I most surely will get one - whenever it will be released ;)

Im going to buy one. I just hope they got the software in good shape. If the thing is released in BETA condition Im going to send it right back.

I'll be getting one also.

I just hope that the software comes pre-configured with a DCS:A-10C profile. It would really be nice to simply plug & play instead of spending countless hours doing research & configuring (like Saitek) to make it as accurate as possible.

How do you think Thrustmaster can pre-configure the Warthog, if DCS : A-10C is still in work and not published yet ?

They might bring out a profile for FC2, may be Black Shark and various other Flight-Sims but not for those which are not released yet.

They can and are, AFAIK, in contact with the developer. ;)

That's pretty easy indeed:

Make a software update when Warthog is released and include the profile. :D

Non of us mortals has any use for a DCS:Warthog-Profile now, anyway ;)

It's a Hall Effect stick, so my suspicion is that it will not be FFB.

Based on the picture that Sokol posted in #306 in this thread, I'd say it is a very safe bet that it is not FFB.

The detachable stick won't lower the cost notably as most of the hardware is in the base of the stick - at least that's how it was in the Cougar and if Sticks are really interchangeable with the Warthog-HOTAS, that won't change.

Maybe they will add a FFB-Stickbasis complete with a new stick instead, like an Apache- or F/A-18 Replica?

I dont think that Thrustmaster will produce any Force Feedback Base for the Stick in the future. Force Feedback never really was succesfull in the FlightSim market.

There were only a few models that really worked proper and i believe that Logitech might be the last company which gives this technology a try.

What i do believe is that Thrustmaster might release a russian Style Stick (replica) like the SU-33´s or SU-25T´s for the Warthogs base in the future.

That would be a cost effective solution. Bundled with a very thin metal plate which can be screwed onto the throttle base with russian style labeling for the buttons and switches it would satisfy the fans of russian aircraft.

This way there would be no need to produce a complete new throttle.

The same strategy would also work for any other type of american/european aircraft.

Development costs are very high and i doubt that expensive flagships like Cougar / Warthog will be sold as often as cheaper joystick models.

I also dont understand why they want to make the Cougar stick interchangeable with the Warthogs stick.

Why should i put an older stick on a new base ? Both sticks seem to have identical ergonomy and also the number and postion of the buttons are the same.

Unless it is a replica, it wouldn't satisfy... :smilewink:

You ever consider the other way around... It would let you use the new handle on the Cougar base if you'd like. That's great for all those (F-16) pit builders! (The new handle has realistic pressure on buttons and switches etc.).

Well i did, but if you have an unmodded default Cougar in your self-built-cockpit, it doesnt make sense to use the new Warthog Stick on the old "unprecise" Cougar base !

I would not buy a brand new precise stick and just use the stick itself to put it on the old base which is really crappy from factory default (potentiometers, gimbals and springs).

Instead i would just replace the complete stick and throttle and throw the cougar into trash or just sell it on ebay to make someone else "happy" :music_whistling:

And if you have a very cool Cougar with an expensive Hall sensor + gimbal + springs mod, there is no need to buy a new one... except you are the the kind of man who always wants to have the brand new toys on the market, just for fun.

Sorry, i cannot see any logic interest to keep the old Cougar stick for use on the new Warthog base and vice versa.

Well, if someone has something along those lines, and *wants* the newer buttons, etc. with more realistic pressures... that makes (expensive) sense. Considering what some folks have poured into their pits, this isn't inconceivable. I've certainly seen people spend far more money on less durable/permanent things in the pursuit of their hobbies.

What, like a U2nxt modded Cougar and Hall modded throttle? Yep, I'm buying this new stick the second it's available for pre-order. Jealous? EDIT: - looking back a bit I see you're a Cougar owner, and possibly a modded one, so probably not. Misunderstood ;)

Seriously though, it's the new throttle quadrant (including all those switches on the baseplate) which has sold it to me, I live in hope that the stick is going to be brilliant but I'm a long-time TM user so I'm prepared for all eventualities!

Some thoughts:

It has been predicted that the new TM offering will be "expensive"... the Cougar was what, 250USD back in 2003? How much have we all spent on other components like video cards, CPUs, RAM, etc. in the last seven years? Probably more than 250 bucks.

I'm hoping the detachable stick grip design means there will finally be other stick grip types available in future. This was the whole reason for making the Cougar grip detachable but we never saw any other grips hit the market. Although the throttles aren't exactly the same as those on the F-15/F-18 I think a Eagle/Hornet stick grip would be a good match for the Warthog.

Isn't one of the main reasons for having a detachable stick grip to make it easier for people to put them on long shafts so you can use them in your custom cockpits?

It's the first thing that springs to mind when I read that anyway.

Note I haven't got a clue about anything thrustmaster-related (Cougar) since I'm currently satisfied with my x52 pro ;)

Originally TM wanted to release replaceable sticks for the Cougar as well. That was the main reason for the exchangeable stick.

Why they made it compatible with the old stick is probably because they safe development cost. They can use the same connectors and possibly some other parts as well (hat mechanics, electronics). They were quite good in the Cougar, so why drop it and come up with something new that might have problems?

I also doubt they will make a FFB variant. That increases cost a lot, can cause a lot of possible mechanical and electronic/software problems and it increases the size of the base. But IMHO the later alone would simply crush a major advantage of the current design, as the baseplate and the slim case fit very well on a seat. For pitbuilders this offers a lot of possibilities.

Besides that, FFB is mostly used for WW1- and WW2-Flightsims, to my observations FFB-Joysticks in modern warfare simulations are a rare sight.
