winz Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 Not if Steam isn't working (eg their authentication server is down). If steam doesn't load or connect properly then you can't load your game unfortunately. Once Steam has taken control, you lose it. The days of simply running an executable are over with Steam games. Oh yes you can. You can load steam in offline mode and then it's the developers choice wheter to allow playing in offline mode. I've played even CS in offline mode. So if you cannot play your game in offline mode, then blame the developer not the distribution platform. -Every Steam game I have is 100% integrated into Steam. Not all games are 100% integraded. I can installl beta-patches, addons, whatever is in Arma2 without problems. The same is true for Dow2, CoH, Empire:TW, and many other I have. I have installed mods for nearly all of the games I own on steam, without any problems att all. Heck, I can run Arma2:OA beta patch without steam running... -You say that version management is a non-issue but riddle me this...if the versions get out of sync then multiplayer compatibility and stability suffers, if allowed at all in that situation (which it is not). So the tools you mention to manage versioning are not sufficiently addressing the problems. If version get out of sync then it's the developers fault, not distribution platform, because he failed to deliver the required update to Steam. Steam version in terms of data files is the same as a boxed version, so if you get into these problems, then there is no guarantee you wouldn't get in them in a boxed version. Also getting your files to the actuall version after alchemy with tons of beta-patces, tweaks, and stuff like that is much easier in steam then in boxed version. You just select 'check files integrity' and steam will compare yours files hash with legitime files hash, and download those file where hash doesn't match. The Valley A-10C Version Revanche for FC 3
claud Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 i have steam for like a year..5 games i bought never had a single problem i dont know why ppl hate it so much its great fast and easy.

Apart from some special cases (napoleon total war) games not developed by steam are installed there and are pretty much the same as any retail version. I can even launch CoH, which I bought over steam, directly without the need to login to steam first.
jj_pt Posted July 11, 2010 Posted July 11, 2010 -And to be clear, I have no issue with downloadable content. I love Direct2Drive. What I am against is Steam's totalitarian approach to how WE manage our content. We can then assume you don't own an Apple product. :D [sIGPIC]http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/images/userbars/A-10C_UserBar_01.gif[/sIGPIC]
Squid_DK Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 I think I need to adress one thing noone here seems to thnink about, and it is the most essentiel thing... Revenue, if you release anything via Steam Valve would like to get their hand in the cookiejar and rightfully so, I think ED would like to make all the profit they can in the first period after release, and that can only be done if they are the sole distributor. This is a niche market and even if Valve's revenue is just 10% which is very hard to believe it is a loss that could hurt ED. Grimes Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Or they could just make a special hat for Team Fortress 2, where everyone who pre-orders DCS:A10 will get a special in game hat. TF2 is one of the best hat wearing simulations out there, and people take it very seriously. I guarantee that if A-10 had a tie in with TF2 like that the sales would be 100 times more than what was projected. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. leafer Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Special hat and hat wearing simulation? Not trying to be a prick but I don't get it. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
pyates2104 Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 No NO no NO no NO no NO!!! No Steam ever! Steam is single handedly ruining the PC gaming market: -games release late -updates are inconsistent -inability to perform manual version management is troublesome -if steam goes down you cannot play the game you paid for!!!! -if there is a problem with multiplayer, steam will never care. And the developer can blame steam. Down with Steam!! They are the WORST thing to happen to PC gaming, EVER!!! Just my 0.02 I agree, If they release it on steam I'm out. I've had nothing but bad experiences with steam enabled games and will never buy a product that uses it again!
Grimes Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Special hat and hat wearing simulation? Not trying to be a prick but I don't get it. Silly jokes related to Team Fortress 2 and its official blog. Basically they added character customization features to the game. Aside from weapons, which can be earned or randomly given to players, they added cosmetic stuff, like hats. The hats have an incredibly rare % chance of being awarded, thus alot of players are interested in getting them because they are rare. Valve has poked fun at itself by alluding to the fact that they keep releasing updates that add new hats rather than actual game content. Thus the "hat wearing simulation" phrase was coined. But yeah, they have done cross-game promotional stuff with TF2. If you pre-ordered Left 4 Dead you received a hat one of the characters in it had. kiss4luna Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 my days really suck when i bought Half-Life 2 the earlier days in 2005~2007 but now steam is stable enough and easy to use and makes buying games easy RTX 3070
CyBerkut Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 There are lots of different aspects to the issue: - Revenues and revenue sharing. - Copy protection. - Customer preferences on downloaded vs boxed media. - Control of the online / multiplayer experience. From my perspective, E.D. has demonstrated a clear, solid interest in all aspects, and has made good decisions to date, based upon what appear to be good reasons. I don't expect that to change in the foreseeable future. Steam can be a good *option* at some point, I suppose (ie. after direct sales from E.D. have tapered off), but I wouldn't want to see them be the sole point of access for anything that E.D. is producing. As long as privately hosted servers, and mod-ability remain intact, I don't think Steam could hurt, once it makes financial sense. I know a number of people who despise Modern Warfare 2 being on Steam. My experience with Supreme Commander 2 on Steam has been OK, but it hardly makes me want to use it for everything. Supreme Commander 2 has been a disappointment in community related aspects such as user-created maps and mods that extended the playability of Supreme Commander, and SC:Forged Alliance for much longer..... but that probably lies at the feet of Square Enix and/or THQ. Everybody has opinions, but in the end, E.D. has to do what they think makes the best sense. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] There's no place like 127.0.0.1
leafer Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Ahh...thank you, Mr. Grimes. Doesn't one of the characters lug a gattling gun around? It would be funny if he wore an A-10 hat. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

Raylon Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Just bought my second Black Shark copy, this time on Steam. I can't see anything wrong with Steam, I have a collection of 94 games on it, and love very bit of it. I hope A-10 comes out on it.
vrv Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Yeah same. I've been using it for around six years. I have something like 100+ games and besides the rare busy content server I haven't had any problems with it. Smoky Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Nobody is *forcing* you to buy it through steam. True, unless the only way to buy it or launch it is through Steam, which is what the anti-Steam advocates are suggesting is the concern.
element1108 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I doubt it will go exclusive to Steam, ED does fine with it's direct to download...options are proving to be nice though for some :)
leafer Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I seriously doubt ED will go the way of Steam only releases. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
luza Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I think it's brilliant bringing DCS series to steam, and hopefully it will get ED some more $$$, I woulda bought the game long before I did if it was on steam :) I love steam :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
RSharpe Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I pretty much buy games exclusively on Steam these days. I just couldn't be bothered with hunting down a physical copy from a physical store or mail order, or go the trouble of downloading and installing dozens of patches over the course of the lifetime of the game. It would be nice if users had the choice to purchase the game by whichever method suits them. Having said that, I hope that A-10C comes out on Steam at the same time the other versions are being released, and that it will come without StarForce. 1
digital_steve Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Agreed RSharpe I prefer the steam platform for delivery... just like i prefer xbox live for xbox game delivery. ED got a win out of me as i paid for DCS: Black Shark again to have the steam version; i'm not stoked about paying twice, but it makes life easier for me in the long run (reinstalls on systems, backup etc) AMD Phenom II 965 BE @ 3.8GHz, 8GB OCZ AMD BE RAM, ATI HD5970 2GB XFX BE @ 875/1215, TM HOTAS Cougar, TM Cougar MFDs, TrackIR 5, CH MFP, GoFlight Switch Panel, iMo Mini-Monster Touch, Mimo 720S, Saitek Pro Flight Headset
andysim Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 I personaly have no problem with Steam and use it alot. I remeber a few years ago when steam was still new I was playing COD World at War and a patch was released but it was 3 weeks before the patch came for Steam users. Ive had no problems since then though. The only shop in my town that stocks games never has what im after and when I ask if they can get a copy Im usualy faced with the usual anwser "oh that will take a week if we order that" I could mess about looking for it from a mail order website but its just so much easier to click >download. If i hadnt had my copy on disc already I would have got it on steam.
