There are most likely plans that are not fit to be made public. The last word was that all efforts are focused on DCSW for now. Expect such news only very close to if not post release.

Awe that sucks, post release, that could be 3 to 4 months do to unforeseen patches and upgrades?

so we should see an announcement some time around May 2011.

This is my personal estimate, nothing official. I'd rather correct that towards end of 2010, though.

I forgot about the whole NVIS thing. The CP lights on the pre-NVIS A model are orange. Thanks for the info, Deadman.

stupid question time

this might be the wrong place to put this. sorry if it is. i was wondering why the targeting pod in the screenshots was always on station 8 or 9? could it be put on the centerline station, thereby freeing up a station for more weapons. please correct me if there is a specific reason for this. thank-you

Not all stations are wired for the TGP.

It's actually only loaded on stations 2 or 10 on the A-10C. It was loaded on stations 3 and 9 on the A-10A.

The only thing that can be loaded on the centre line is a drop tank, and only if stations 5 and 7 are empty.

The centerline can carry a Triple Ejector Rack. The TER can mount any Mk80 LDGP bomb, including the GBU-12. The GBU-12 can also mount directly to station 6, but that is less common. If it counts at all, a personal effects/cargo pod can also go on the center.

I believe you are misunderstanding. The DCS modules will be compatible in an online environment (ie Fixed wing and Rotary aircraft flying in the same airspace) The Idea is that you can have (eventually) several DCS modules installed on you computer. But each module will be a standalone install on your computer. Ie you cant select to fly the Ka-50 from inside the A-10 module, but you can fly with other KA-50 pilots online from inside the A-10 module.

The underlying Simulation engine gets patched/updated for all DCS modules, regardless of which, or how many, modules you own.

Nate

That is good enough for me. However, if older products weren't patched with the new features (not only graphic but avionics and functionality), it would be rather dissapointing.

Will we be seeing crude forward bases (dirt roads, highways, etc.) To take off from?

Thing is that in about 5 years you will have ~150Gb+ of DCS on your rig. Slightly too much for a "single" product. From my POV, would make much more sence to have single enviroment (or multiple, i.e. maps of other areas all as stand alones) and all flyables could be as add ons to the main package instead of stand alones. In that case, you must have an enviroment installed plus whichever flyable you want. Maybe with the new engine. In any way we all will witness evolution :smilewink:

In 5 years we could easily be sporting 50TB+ disks.

It's the way storage has trended ever since hard disks started racing off.. whether it's MB or GB or TB it starts out in small numbers but follows the same sort of patterns..

0.5 or 1 to 2 to get going with... then it starts doubling a little and you get your 4s and 8s, then everyone (vendor) goes nuts and you get your 10's 20's 32's and 50's, before you know it it's in the 100+ range and getting ready to switch to the new denomination to start all over again.

Personally I'm looking forward to it, but not as much as I'm looking forward to magnetic racetrack technology being commercialised which offers a quantum leap in personal storage shifts: http://www.almaden.ibm.com/spinaps/research/sd/?racetrack

(As can be typical with IBM, they research brilliant designs, sit on them for 1-2 decades, then someone else comes along and produces marketable versions of it for them that then become popular..).

/tangent off

Personally I wouldn't be too troubled about storage escalation. The device capacity also goes up by an order of magnitude or more frequently enough to keep up. What does become difficult is effectively backing it all up!

Bah, I remember people being skeptical of digital distribution solutions since downloading a game that's a massive 1GB over the internet would take waaaay too long...

Connection speeds also grow reducilously fast.

Depends which part of UK you live in. In London "Virgin media" gives you 50Mbit. And from December all London goes optical via BT.

Basically the line is well well over the boundaries of being able to get ADSL, ermm realistically we would be pleased if you receive any form of service at all........
