Hi All,

I think I nearly have this, but I just wanted to check something, I find I am trimming a lot, almost manoeuvre, trim, manoeuvre, trim... especially in turns, is this right?

You in theory should not fly without all the autopilot modes. You can temporarily disable all of them by holding the trim button down. That is what I do. The preferred method however, is to press and release, press and release, press and release, press and release, press and release... get used to it if you want to use this method. ( which is what you are doing now )

....is this right?

Yes.

For every single change in attitude, now matter how insignificant, trim and trim again just for Good Measure.......and trim again :)

if you hold down the trim button while manouwering the autopilot wont fight you...

if you try to change the heading the autopilot allways try to keep your actual heading, so if you try to turn left with rudder input the autopilot will turn your rudder to the right to keep your heading.

its simple once you understood how it works, while you hold down the trim button you override the autopilot channels, so the autopilot wont try to hold your heading/pitch/roll and fight you.

just press the button as long you are manouwering and if you reached your heading and the heli is stable release it and the autopilot will keep your new heading and pitch/roll.

I never had a problem flying by just trimming a lot. No need to turn nothing off nor hold the trim... now I just got to be a better pilot :D

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..

This is also how I do it. In a close environment ( like canyons/valleys and amongst highrise buildings) I find it so much easier to just hold in trim whilst jinking and the ship is solid as a rock. When I lead out of this environment, I get the attitude I want then release. Small corrections are then done with the trim-click method.

This is how one Ka-50 pilot does it. Listen for the 'click-click' of the trimmer mechanism:

Very helpful!

What are the scales on the bottom of the HUD? I do not recognize them from my BS. Left looks like G, right must be Collective?

Take Heading Hold off, hardly any trim necessary.

Or change your flying technique to involve fewer turns and changes in values. If you turn >3deg sec then the heading hold holds your turn rate instead of your heading.

Everyone always forgets to mention another big part of the trim system, that being the collective brake. In the real thing you must squeeze the brake lever on the collective to actually move the collective. There is a microswitch on the brake handle that when the handle is released it provides Altitude point for the ALT HOLD autpilot channel. I find it really helps with long distance flights AFAIK the trim button does not set the altitude if you have the ALT HOLD button pushed in.

Also notice in that video about 4:30 when he's doing aerobatics....you dont hear the trimmer click anymore...he's probably got the button held in.

Wet = Hands on all the time constantly using Cyclic, Rudders and Collective in and out of their RT locations in accordance with the attitude of the BS.

Slayer is correct about the use of collective brake to change Altitude / have a finer control over it when using Alt hold AP. Dont forget that it will DEMAND 20% authority unless you override by excessive movement / demand. The collective brake enables you to take immediate control in that band 1-20%.
