I wish I could toggle in game between two axis curves....it would be sweet to swtich to the "Smooth Hog" for refueling and then back to "Twitch Hog" for the rest.

I just tried the curves on X and Y, and I found out how accustomed I was to no curve when I failed to pull out of a steep gun run with Smooth Hog.

I remember reading an advice from someone involved with ED when FC was released that axis should be linear for most realistic handling. Is this still true for DCSW? I'm considering tweaking myself as my x52 is getting a little old, and has become a bit unweildy... (It kinda wants to stay in it current position and jerks a little when moved, almost as it gets "stuck")

AFAIK it's correct for most aircrafts out there. Unfortunately we do have to deal with PC simulator controls culprits (yeah, you too Warthog owners) and curvature is the only way to deal with it.

I've been advocating for curvatures use since the very first month of my Black Shark flying, two years ago or so. Many people would probably found about it earlier but I needed to clean up my signature :) Joystick configuration tips and advices

Yes, a properly set curvature can "simulate" a real long control stick - hand inertia / delay.

In Falcon 4.0 :tomato: there was an option to switch to less sensitive controls for refueling. It was activated at the moment of fuel valve cover opening. I don't know if the real 16 has something like that.

thats one thing I really like about the X65 Stick... It has 4 different sensitivity modes that you can bring up on the fly.

One thing I had to do with the WH is add small deadzones to make up for the tiny bit of mechanical play around the center of the stick - side to side is at 3% forward backward is 4%. You can feel the play by just pushing the stick with one finger. So I just push it with a finger and set the deadzone to compensate for that. Basically it is the area or the stick moves in which there is zero spring tension Doing this keeps you from having to constantly "bump" steer so much when doing refuling. This with curves help tremendously with AAR.

Yes, that does come in handy doesn't it :).

I don't know how you fly it at those settings Strong. I tried it and while that may be excellent for landing or AAR I found it far to sluggish for combat maneuvering. But that's just me. To each their own. I kept backing Sat and Curve by 5 unit intervals during test hops and I eventually ended up at 100 Sat and 20 Curve. Will proceed to test that under combat conditions and then landing and AAR and see how that goes. But everyone here is definitely right ... in order to do AAR at least some tinkering with these settings is going to be needed.

Ive been down the curve path before, but linear is the most real I like it and the hog stick is very precise. Linear helps me fly on the edge of stall and do some hard missile evasive maneuvers. With a curve the non linear response creates jerkiness as you move towards the edge of the stick it moves too fast. In exchange for that a curve does give you more resolution near stick centre so it can suit some people if they don't do any hard flying.

I have played alot of hours in rise of flight with twitchy planes like the sopwith camel though so that's trained my hand I guess, I find the warthog to be a fairly smooth flyer and the cannon very accurate at default setting.

Useful Thread

With these settings, I was able to AAR full tanks twice in a row with no disconnects. I have more precise control over the Hawg and I don't over extend my flight surfaces when hard maneuvering.

You may have to tweak these numbers to your personal taste.

This, as a nugget, really interests me. HOTAS, generally, is not my friend.

I find I have more trouble with throttle than with anything else. StrongHarm, would you kindly recommend a setting for the throttle so that there is more give in the mid-range of the throttle slider?

Would very much appreciate it.

I saw somewhere in the Options/Keys a settings for "throttle step" ...I'll have to check it again, but perhaps therein lies a solution.

...Will have to revisit this when I get home.

Cheers,

Moosh

Use negative curvature value (?) to bend the curve the other way. The resulting non-linear throttle axis char. is not recommended in any case as it won't solve spiking sensor issue even by a bit. If the throttle sensor spikes near the movement range limits try to use saturation instead, leaving the curvature at 0.

Just for interest's sake, hasn't anybody else built a little extension for their joystick? It's really easy to get some plumbing/garden hose bits and pieces and customise it to your liking (especially if you have a joystick like a Cougar, which comes apart and has really strong springs) - I've got about the right length now after a bit of trial and error, and I haven't found a need to tune the axes - tiny, precise movements, as well as rapid movements are possible. It's a massive improvement.

Yup extending the stick length is a very good mod to enable precise control across the entire throw of the stick. I may do it later down the road.

Strangely it was only yesterday I started drilling AAR and quickly discoverd I would need to increase the curve on my Warthog, my thinking is set the stick up for AAR and then relearn the BFM's based on that curve as AAR is a necessity. Will try these settings Strongharm they might be the answer.

A friendly warning:

  • most joystick mechanisms (gimbals) are not properly built to withstand loads and provide sturdiness even in their default configuration, let alone with increased stick length = increased loads
  • if you use crappy sensors modding the stick to have a longer arm will not help you

I did the changes to the Axes Tune somewhat differantly. I set the Deadzone to "25" and the Curvature to 35 and the A-10C flies as smoothly as can be. I left the other settings at default levels

Congratulations! You've just turned your stick into keyboard :D

It seems like a technical problem so you should search for the solution using forum search function and, if nothing is found, post a new topic in appropriate forum section.

BTW...

Copying Errors / Warnings AS TEXT

  1. When faced with the error message window, click on the window's title bar to highlight it.
  2. press CTRL + C, just like you do when you want to copy a text string or a file.
  3. open Notepad.exe from the Run menu, and paste the message by using CTRL + V.

Double check you do not have any conflicting settings for that axis.

No idea why it happens but every once in a while my roll and pitch will also show up under my CH Rudders column. I just delete them and no problem.

I thought in DCS: Warthog and Blackshark we're supposed to leave it linear (since the performance and handling comes with the flight model).

However, in FC2/FC1 etc. using Saturation 100% and Curvature 30-40% for both X/Y and Z gives it a more realistic feel of the jet. Lowering the Saturation limits your travel in the axis, while Curvature tweaks the range of inputs so it's "softer" near the center, and exponentially gets more "coarse" after the elbow on the curve.

I would say curves are only really mandatory for yaw. I was having huge problems on landing and takeoff when I realized that the slightest tap of my pedals would induce huge yaw. Setting up an aggressive curve lets me make minor NWS and rudder adjustments for keeping me on the runway...
