I snapped this picture when I was doing Flying Crew Chief stuff for C-17s back in 2008. We only spent 3 or so hours on the ground in Tripoli. This was from the flight deck. attachment.php?attachmentid=49323&stc=1&d=1300770680

Landed totally flat, by appearances, no trail that can be seen - rather like those MiG-29 images from Allied Force in '99.

I wonder if something hit it.

both pilots recovered, blaming it on mechanical failure, no mention of hostile action.

I suspect machanical failure after it got hit by something, whether AAA or Sams or birds.

Too bad about the mud hen, the US cannot afford to be losing them with production long shut down.

You know... For some of us, the less - the merrier :) It's good to know that the pilots are OK though.

Even if it was shot down, like I suspect, they are not going to admit it anyway. Too much of a propaganda coup for Libya.

Nice to hear that the Pilot and WSO was picked up ok, hopefully without any injuries.

In taht video we can see AIM-120C with serial number dating from 2004...phew...USAFE really needs to dump that old ammo somewhere but is prohibited to do so in Lakenheat and transport it back to US is costly.

Hence conflicts like this 'round the world!

Why would you suspect that? Most of the SAM sites were taken out and no one is indicating or claiming that it was hit by anything. It would be surprising if it was operating at altitudes where something from the ground could hit it to begin with - there's simply no need for that.

Even if it was shot down, like I suspect

It's very possible that an F-15E could possibly have been shot down over a combat zone by friendly or enemy action. They're not invincible, and there is so much misinformation around this conflict that we may not know what actually happened for a while.

Remember, the USN kept the Speicher shootdown details on the qt for a very long time, not forgetting the F-117 nonsense during Allied Force. Propoganda is a two way street.

I'd been thankful there were not more casualties. There's a fair amount of lethal metal in Libya.

Why would you send an air dominance fighter to pound ground? Pretty stupid inquiry.

I wouldn't take everything that the media says for granted. In fact, even if it has been indeed shot down the officials will never initially admit that, as it was the case with the shooting down of the Aviano's squadron commander F-16CJ in '99 over Serbia until evidence leaked out. I would say that according to the pattern of the damage seen on the following pictures there is a strong case that the culprit for the 'crash' of this plane might likely be a detonation of a larger missile warhead in close proximity. On the other side the libyan side did not confirm shooting down the plane as well. It makes sense to assume it was flying at medium to high altitude since it is really stupid to fly at low altitude where the risk is high from AAA and manpads taken into consideration the obsolescence of the air defences in libya and the initial sead efforts. However, it is a possibility we shouldn't exclude, since these F-15 are pretty sturdy planes that usually don't go down by themselves in peacetime conditions due to mechanical failure :)

P.S. Hope I was more constructive this time, and you will not interpret my posts as politics like the last time

The holes you say might be from missile explosion, seems too big and few, to indicate damage from shrapnels.
