First On-Line Air 2 Air Kill!!! Wu-huuuuu...

Last night... on the 74th Flying Tigers Server... operation Samson...

Me and a bunch of Hogs just about cleaned the Samson area (after heavy losses due to the SA-11 battery in "Death Star" mode)...

...suddenly the Ops warns about a pair of hostile Mig-23s, incursing the area of operation...

Recalling a sentence from the briefing about two Migs captured by the enemy, i frantically scanned the skies...

These two start taking names the minute they entered missiles range... In what seemed like a couple of seconds there were three A-10s plummeting down...

Luckily, when the frenzy started I was a little further to the shore at 10000ft, evaluating the new target area that was open after cleaning the Samson task...

Migs went pass me... I followed their smoking trail of destruction, anxiety & rage mixing in my head... uncaged Sidewinders...

As soon as I got tone my missile went off but this sneaky Mig went up for the clouds stepping on flares and afterburners... The fourth Hog managed to fire an AIM-9 just before he ate an Aphid (R-60), thus taking one of the dreaded Migs with him...

It was me & him now... I climbed up through the cloudbase, blind... just praying for a tone in the direction I thought the beast was headed last...

Then I hear another Hog taking the fall, nearer to the base... Damn they were fast, bloodthirsty... like wolves storming a sheep herd...

I descend back down through greyness, just to witness the last of my bretheren being shred apart by the Mig's guns...

Was I the last sheep, or the sheperd... I don't know... but my squealing Sidewinder seeker pointed to the smoking remnants of the last fallen Hog told me the big bad wolf was coming... head on...

I clutched the weapons release, missile went woooosh and a second later it was me again, all alone wandering the skies... with just a hurting memory of my lost brothers and a picture of a Mig-23, plummeting down in pieces...

Awesome. That must have been quite a thrill. I'm still a noob when it comes to air to air. No kills yet. :-(

Congrats on the A2A kill, they don't come easy...

They'd come a lot easier if the A-10 was allowed to carry AMRAAMs: :D

Ha...I was one of the ones going down. I heard a MIG fly by and I started typing "Holy shit I think I just heard one"...then he killed me. That was a pretty sweet mission, wish I didnt come in so late.

And what did you learn that evening: Don't type messages once you're engaged, activate your CMS and perform defensive maneuvers! :smartass:

:D

Sidenote: Using TS3 gives you hands-free time! ;)

Well, the sidenote aimed at the broad range of all non-TSing pilots. ;)

Can anyone in the thread please tell me the name of this "Mig intrusion" mission...?

I'll maybe try to set it up for my clan mates... but can't remember which one it was... :)

Thx!!!

*EDIT*

Just reread my first post... operation Samson it is...

Can someone give me a link to this mission... if I don't find it myself...?

THX!!!

*EDIT2*

Damn... just found a post on how all the 74th missions are restricted to their servers only... will wait for it to come back in in the mission rotation... :)))

If you are on a [another] sqds server then their TS server should be used..

74th server = 74th TS

159th server - 159th TS

etc, etc

I'm sure no one would mind.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

As a ground dude in my day job I take eliminating the air threat seriously and I cringed when I saw the efficiency with which enemy air decimates blufor in Fast Missions. So, I try and whack a couple of fixed wing threats when I can as my first order of business before I go terrorizing redfor ground targets.

At medium difficulty: When aircraft are merging, lock on with Mavericks at max range, loose a couple then get the hell out of the way--I have done it a couple of different ways, either one per target or two, and two seems to get the job done though you can do two at the first target and then one at the second and then see whether you need to send the fourth. How you do it is all a matter of how dextrous you are at locking up targets.

Once the missiles are on their way, root hog or die. So long as you give enemy AI pilots a wide berth they seem perfectly willing to extend professional courtesy your way.

The Maverick is too slow to chase from rear aspect and it's not exactly nimble but provided the target is not offset too much it can manage to put itself in the way of a target unawares. If you're lucky the enemy will not notice the incoming mail. Helicopters are easier and the PK rises accordingly.

Generally, A2A with an A-10 is a losing proposition after the merge. Even the Hog's peers, the SU-25s, are computer controlled and as such have better power management, and certainly better targeting algorithms--I've followed SU17s around and watched them kill Bradleys with 20-30 round bursts at greater than 1Nm. You can't maintain power for a turning fight for long. The helos are tough because they can rotate and tear you apart in short order and they have good countermeasures and aren't shy to use them. Which means you often have to loose air to air missiles at half a mile or less to get it in there, which means exposure to punishment and a need for some luck (created or dumb) for a good release off the rack.

I have found that it's great when you can get an A2A kill but for me it's always the result of somehow making the fight unfair. Which is good business as far as I'm concerned.

I was once teamkilled on purpose in a server. For my retaliation I decided to get on the Tk'ers six and stay there no matter what he tried to do. Suffice to say I BFM'ed him into the ground without actually firing a shot at him. :D
