The New Edge maps

S! All,

I am a little confused ( and no it is not because I drank to much beer in my younger days (well maybe) )

Ok I know that if you got the A10-c in beta you also got the new Edge Nevada map with it (when it comes out which is not to long now by the sounds of things)

And I have read some were that the map that is DCS world now will no longer work when DCS goes EDGE.

Sooooo will DCS still be a free DL with the currant map but done in EDGE ??

I know that if I want (and I do ) the Nevada map I will have to pay for it which is cool

But what map will the non Nevada owners use in EDGE?? :joystick:

At the moment there are no current, known, plans to update Georgia theatre with EDGE.

The current map will still function just fine after EDGE is released.

DCS will still be free, until stated otherwise.

Cool Ok,.

That being said, So if I want to fly in EDGE I will have to buy Nevada map (no worries their)

Or go DCS WWII 1944 (which i have)

or stick with the old Georiga map. And stay with the Satuts quo

I am so bored of waiting for this... content development for DCS is so painfully slow.

I wish people would stop developing for dying platforms like FSX and focus their efforts here instead.

Well, I will leave the speculations if FSX is dying or not on somebody else (mods won't be happy about this kind of conversation anyway I think), but all I can say it's not that easy to just "stop developing for FSX and focus on DCS instead".

Remember that DCS and FSX are two completely different platforms, so switching from one to another effectively means starting over from zero. And people who are good at something usually don't like to quit and challenge luck somewhere else with no guarantee of success.

But I fully agree that DCS is the future and any potential developer would be much needed.

I was just thinking about EDGE today and the whole "Flat plane of water under everything" method currently used in DCS: World.

Considering Wags said the the terrain has the option to be put onto a spherical globe, I wonder if that means they've moved away from that method of rendering water, to a more... visually appealing, shall we say, method.

What's visually unappealing about water that you can't see?

Nevada + F/A-18C = no carrier ops :P

Anyone thought about this? I'm quite confused, since we'll still need the black sea region for carrier ops when the F/A-18C comes out, will DCS World have 2 different engines inside of it? EDGE + current? That's gonna be a pain for the developers to maintain. :noexpression:

The fact that the water surface looks 200+ ft under the shoreline in most rivers and lakes is what I'm mostly speaking about. Thanks for the wise comment though- always appreciated.

That was fixed for the vast majority of water bodies in the game. The two rivers in Georgia connecting to the Black Sea are the only two remaining rivers that have this issue. Granted all of the other rivers and lakes are built into the terrain mesh and have a more simplified water effect when compared to the Black Sea, but they are no longer an empty space using the water layer to create a texture.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

Not sure where this is coming from but you are welcome, i guess.

You might want to consider that indeed the problem you hinted at, as Grimes has explained, is almost non existant before you give me attitude about a question.

It might be my imagination, but the rivers seem to defy gravity in a number of places and go up and down hills like they were roads instead of constantly flowing downwards.

The water layer will render under ground IF you look under ground.

So is the water layer completely gone now or does it still render under the ground like I've heard talk that it does?

Yes, those are errors in the elevation map or caused by the resolution of the elevation map being too low. This is a separate issue from what was discussed above.

I don't know, but the cause of that is sometimes the rivers/ lakes flow extra fast and flood during heavy rain season and cause the soil to become super soft. Even the slightest weight on the riverbank will cause an object to sink

Thank you for clarifying that ;) I guess when you fly around the Black sea and are constantly flying over those rivers, I notice it all the time.

My attitude was in regards to your comment, which obviously was inaccurate, as Grimes just stated. When you fly in a certain area often, I'd say it's very existent, and noticeable.

Anyway, I guess I was just curious about how EDGE is going to handle this. Only time will tell I suppose.

I'd like to redirect your attention to your first post:

at which point there was no way of knowing whether you were talking about the concept of having a plane of water under the terrain per se or the problem you only mentioned in your second post, hence my question. It is rather obvious to you what you are talking about, it isn't to everyone else. All i'm asking is you dial down the attitude, it was uncalled for.

...once the map is in DCS, we can evaluate the performance impact of tree collision and decide what we will do...

Wags, any news about that?

Gotcha. There might be a problem if we're looking underground in an airplane though.
