joebloggs Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Any map makes volunteering to make a VR map without any judder? You could add quite a bit of detail to it without getting any judder with the new edge engine and it would be huge success with VR about to be released next year. I can't see ED making one just for VR, but someone must be rubbing their hands thinking it's a good idea. I know i'd make one if I could.
vicx Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I am doing some pretty intensive testing with VR and Nevada. It is pretty early to be making guesses as to what is causing the framerate problems .. but I think that some rendering techniques in Nevada are problematic for VR in particular. The actual objects that cause problems might be able to give some clues. The Trees in Nevada have a problem but it might be something specific to the technique used rather than just their numbers. I have been trying to turn off some of the rendering passes in Nevada so that I can look at stuff in isolation. So far I have only identified one thing (and there could be many others) that causes a hit to framerates. *Note* This is running everything on an extremely LOW settings ALREADY. And still there are highly unusual drops in framerate that are not easily explained. So these pictures will tell a story of this first thing I have found. I don't know whether doubles-sided polygons are the actual problem. Or they are just a a tiny bit more expensive than single sided and that turns out to be a problem for VR. Could be specifically double-sided polygons with a different texture on each side. Could be specifically double-sided polygons having a normal map. I don't know. I have seen objects having double-sided polygons causing a drop in the VR framerate from 75fps to 50fps. Being close can cause the drop or just having more than a few objects with double-sided polygons in the viewport. It could be coincidence ... but it could also be something for ED devs to look at. For most people going from 75-50fps is no big deal but for VR it is very bad.
joebloggs Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) When you say: "Many other Scenery models with double polygon cause fps." I don't think that is something ED would change right now for VR. I admire your work on this, but I think it will only come to fruition once someone decides to make a VR map that's made from scratch and has VR in mind. You only have to look at how popular something like Elite Dangerous became to know there's a market for VR. The new Edge engine allows you to place many objects on the map at once, so someone making a VR map could add lots of detail and make it a very good VR experience. Who knows, maybe Ed will do this themselves as soon as VR takes off next year, I know I would. Edited December 7, 2015 by joebloggs
metalnwood Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I am not so sure a map made for VR would do much if the engine is having issues with specific things like being pointed out. For example, up close on an object, there is nothing in that object that should suggest it should drop to 50 from anything well above that.
Deathbane Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) Assets like this as a former games dev, need optimising. It doesnt just affect VR, it affects everyone including those with multi monitor setups. VR just notices it harder due to need for consistent high framerate. The fact I get a very, very smooth experience in the sky, and above cities until im very close to very certain assets, says a few of them might need work. ED have done an excellent job on this so far. Edited December 5, 2015 by Deathbane V.O.D.K.A. Squadron: Northern Wolves - Red ones go faster!
Brisse Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Good find vicx. I hope the devs can put this feedback into good use. Maybe you should post it as a bug report, so we are sure they notice.

joebloggs Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Does anyone if DK2 uses MSAA in the setting of DCS? I just changes mine from 2x to 16x and have no judder at all. Before MSAA used to have a massive hit on performance in DCS, so I'm just wondering if it makes a difference in DCS now or if it's somehow switched off.

vicx Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 (edited) joebloggs might be right. It could be that Nevada and DCS 2.0 are highly tuned to deliver ONLY 60fps or in very difficult scenes a lower target than even that. My testing seems to be showing that any scene with more than a dozen LOD0 terrain objects just can't render fast enough ever. I don't think VR SLI is going to solve this. I doubt even raw clockspeed will be enough in the short term. I think mking VR work with Nevada will require changes to the DCS 2.0 renderer and/or the assets which seems unlikely ... in the short term. I think encouraging ED to make an updated Caucasus map VR friendly is an approach we should take. I'm just wondering if it makes a difference in DCS now or if it's somehow switched off. It seems to make a visual difference to me using the built-in techniques. It isn't that taxing because it is other stuff that is doing the damage. === i7 3820@3.6Mhz 16GB | GTX780 3GB (very similar to a 970) Everything set on extreme low settings Other custom "extreme" low settings via lua edits to - config\graphics.lua - config\terrain\terrainoptions41.lua - config\terrain\low.lua Added information for DE Edited December 7, 2015 by vicx add image
Flim Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 (edited) I thought ED guys were testing this...? Obviously they knew there were issues. In my opinion at this point, if you are not developing for VR (specifically) not just hoping it will work on the side, then you are way behind. That is where gaming is going, no one will want to play 2d in the next few years. I like the idea of making a map for VR, that would be a great place to start... Edited December 7, 2015 by Flim

There's a radio mod posted a few pages back. Not sure if it works in 2.0. It did in 1.5. You could test and see. joebloggs Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I am not so sure a map made for VR would do much if the engine is having issues with specific things like being pointed out. For example, up close on an object, there is nothing in that object that should suggest it should drop to 50 from anything well above that. Why not? Obviously you wouldn't add these objects to a VR map if they were causing a problem. If you were making a VR map from scratch it would be up to you what you added. Even making a fairly plain map, if that's what was required for VR would be good. This would allowed you to add more ai without getting the dread judder and it would be great for VR. The NTTR map was never designed for VR, the Devs just added VR to DCS because it came along. I think they have done a great job at introducing it to DCS, but now it's upto a map maker or ED themselves, to make a map that works well with VR. I'm sure most people with a VR headset would agree with me on this.
DerekSpeare Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 The reality is VR. If developers don't take ownership of this fact, they will be left to rust. VR isn't going to take over tomorrow, but in the years to come, it will be the way games are enjoyed.
