smirkza Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Have you got a link? i'm using a techgear matte screen guard but sit get sde :( I'm hoping this is what he is referring to, as I have just ordered one. I know it's a galaxy note 3 inside the DK2 so this should fit well, and if it doesn't work it's a small loss. Here are a couple of videos that hint at the improvements a matte screen protector could offer Will let you know if it makes any difference when it arrives... Cheers, Smirkza Cheers, Smirkza
SkateZilla Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 (edited) Filters on the DK2 (Scotch Tape, Privacy Filter, etc) only blur the screen/shift out of focus. However you CAN shift /diffuse the screen enough to remove the SDE Effect without making the image too blurred: http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=140&t=17927: Trash Bags and Laminating sheets. hansangb Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I took some pictures through the CV1 today to help illustrate what to expect from the resolution. These are shot through the optics, not screenshots. As you can see, it's fairly usable, but certainly not perfect. One thing you're not going to get from the pictures is the smoothness of the low latency and 90hz refresh rate and the sense of presence. Still, you can get a pretty good idea here of what to expect gauges and stuff to look like. Edit: see the photos at the link for a larger image https://goo.gl/photos/R84Rxmoie2Nyp55u7 https://goo.gl/photos/R84Rxmoie2Nyp55u7 Here's a shot leaned in slightly and cropped to 100%. You can see that the speed tape is quite readable, and the thousands on the altitude tape is easy, but the hundreds and tens are a bit more difficult. Thanks for the photos. As a longtime DK1 and DK2 user, the images do look sharper (accounting for the camera/handholding etc.) I'm chuckling because people w/o DK2 experience only see the image and are saying "it looks terrible" I get that. Based on the camera picture, it's like taking a step back in time. But I can assure you, that the sum total of VR experience *MORE* than outweigh what you may conceive as less than stellar image quality. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, you just have to try it. For the same reason why I can't explain the color red to a person born blind, I can't explain the VR experience with a 2D picture. It becomes a non-nonsensical comparison. Kind of like showing off 4K and 8K image over a 1080P only TV set. SkateZilla Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 (edited) Post info when/if you hear about them, I would be interested in checking it out. I doubt it's "Official" as it replaces the entire Mipi DSI / Screens. But there was a 2560x1440p 75hz OLED Screen w/ Mipi DSI to HDMI Board for $160 USD, However, if you're not in China, you'll pay significant shipping + export tax, taking it to around $300 easy. One could scour ebay and the google for 75hz 1440p displays, Which would be higher res than CV1 BTW. 2560x1440 vs 2160x1200 The main issue w/ upgrading DK2 screens is the Mipi DSI only supports up to 1080p, otherwise you'd be able to get a compatible 1440p screen without the expensive mipi hdmi board easily. Cheapest I can find now is $250 for 60hz 1440p, 90 day estimated shipping. Or, would the Oculus runtime limit the res somehow? $300 is a lot, but if I can boost my DK2 up to higher than CV1 levels then it is money worth spending. SkateZilla Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 (edited) MIPI Board is the Board and DSI Chip that Converts HDMI to MIPI Format, which is what all teh small cellphone screens use as a interface. Mipi Board needs replaced w/ screen because DK2's MIPI Chip doesnt support above 1920x1080, and is actually overclocked to get the higher refresh rate. Replacing MiPI Board may or may not break direct to rift, and force you to use the unit as extended monitor. smirkza Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 Wow, I just downloaded and tried the Apollo 11 experience from Steam. If you are a sim enthusiast, history buff or just want to experience a cracking piece of immersive story telling, I recommend giving it a go. Works fine with the Dk2 and no gamepad needed - keyboard works fine. The screenshots and videos don't do it justice. I've been using VR for a while now so thought I was over that laugh-out-loud feeling you get when you first put on a headset. This put me right back there in that happy place. An excellent experience. Very much worth it. (I know it's not DCS but sitting at the top of the rocket as it blasts off, with all of the switches and instruments modeled and the actual recording of the cockpit comms playing through your earphones is quite DCS like. Kind of...) Cheers, Smirkza

Do they need beta testers? :) Shame about DK2 Mipi chip, I wonder if the chip could be hacked/ overclocked so that it can push 2560x1440 @75 hz I'd be happy to put a cooler on it :) Possibly cheaper option might be a 2560x1440 rgb oled screen, with DK2 Mipi DSI chip tweaked to project to 2100*1200 square on the screen so it's the same resolution as CV1. It would not use the whole screen, but rgb screen would probably make quite an improvement over the pentile screen. 75hz is minimum in my opinion, 60hz is probably not worth it. But the problem with these games (actually more like experiences) is to wow you and thats it. How many tines can you go through the same 10 mins demo -low replayability. The DK2 was development kit - rough around edges at times. CV1 one is completely different story. dot Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 (edited) diffuser vs no diffuser on dk2 is probably similar to when 3dfx 3d accelerators first came out. All it does is blurs the pixels slightly so you can't notice the black bar between pixels. To see more clearly (stuff between pixels) , higher resolution screen (with more pixels) is needed. P.S. I've just noticed that this image also demonstrates another interesting feature; lighting effects! Just like on this picture, people have reported that Fresnel lenses on Rift and Vive produce "god rays" effect:D [ame] [/ame] Edited April 5, 2016 by dot
