too many password protected servers online imao.

I understand this for squadron trainings or VFS MP events, but it appears that many guys set up their "for my homies/DCS forum members only" servers, which is a bit worrying when lookin at the current MP overall situation:

-> some servers open, no more than 8 to 12 players online at high times (network coding troubles is a separate issue) ... most of them not more than 3 to 4 players online and even these are often pw protected.

seems ridiculous since the community belongs to the interaction of humans..

this post should not be read as "I wanna play in every server" more than "think before you generally password protect" (f.e: swedish server passwording for their swedish players / french for french players etc..)

Inherently, for some reason we have not too many MP guys in DCSW out there and the ones that are online, often additionally limit access to others... limits the MP fun for no reason. -> Teamkillers, too high pingers, etc can be easily sorted out, so no need for all this passwording..

I hope this changes once FC3/ mig 21bis etc.. comes out..

another oppinion which can often be heard in this forum is the "Flaming Cliffs low fidelity" versus "DCS high fidelity attitude" with players saying we are the best and we're not allowing FC /DCS planes here ...

for god sake why ?? let everbody fly the kind of simming fidelity he wants to fly, some will change to full DCS fideltiy afterwards, some may not...but no reason to separate themselves beforehand.

would really appreciate to hear some response here...

cheers

I can tell you one good reason for passwords on the servers: to prevent people from joining without being on Teamspeak...drives me nuts to have people on like 104th server (for example) who are not on TS and buzzing all over without me knowing WTF they are doing...including not yielding right of way at airbases.

yes, these guys are annoying, but had several MP sessions on open servers with players, I've never seen before, some of them even werent on TS and we managed to coordinate each other and it was big fun...

Well yes you can coordinate without voice comms...if you are typing like a madman rather than flying the jet...pass.

You could always run your own open server...or get on the website/teamspeak for the closed server and get involved.

When we have our Squadron's server available to host DCS:World we prefer not passwording the missions. The server has a good speed and its nice to have many pilots inside a mission.

But when we are forced to host ourselves a mission then our internet speed wont handle more people than our squadmates (4-6 pilots) and thats the main reason for passwording.

Another reason is when organising an online event and the slots are reserved days before the mission date ,you want to be sure that the slots will be free for those who registered to them. ;)

good points and fully reasonable...

hoping this kinda "slot camping" can be technically solved by ED and the server can be held open...

Im also praying for a better DCS network capabilites in the future...

sent you a request to OP "Chameleon" btw ;-)

When ED releases a DCS World dedicated server that can handle all the players and keep the misbehaving players out we can see more open servers. But we also need some good server tools to administer the server remotely with functions like the once in ServMan or SLMod.

+1

Its really what its all about for us too, we need to be able to control the server better before its wide open. Wish we would get some sort of update on what they are hoping to accomplish with the DCS Dedicated Server.

yep, ED should bundle a good portion of their ressources on the dedicated server issue after releasing FC3, as this is very fundamental...

A great mod would be some kind of script that cross references your pilot name with registered users on the community forum database OR teamspeak. If they are not registered they cannot spawn at a ramp start slot, instead spawning somewhere out of the way already in flight. This would stop people moving around the airfield being unaccountable.

Also, a trigger zone around the airfield with a radius of 5 miles could detect the height and proximity of the pilot, checks to see if they are a regular registered flier on the forum database or currently on teamspeak, if they are allow them to land. If not, remove them from the airspace.

For larger events to happen it also needs to hold 64 players, 20 fastmovers, 8 a2g players, 2 jtacs, 1 commander and maybe one spectator (for filming/live battle reporting) on each side. And it also needs to hold more units! So this is of course challenging to implement but if they get rid of the mission processing on the server and move this more over to the client there should be plenty of server power to host large missions. I don’t believe the communication lines on the server side are the bottle neck for this to happen.

For a normal squad against squad event its sufficient with 32 players , 8 fastmovers, 5 a2g players, 1 jtac, 1 commander and maybe one spectator (for filming/live battle reporting) on each side.

On public server there also should be a way to balance the teams like when joining a server where there is 2 fastmovers and 2 a2g on the blue side and 3 fastmovers and 2 a2g on the red side the natural free aircraft should be one fastmover on the blue side or a new a2g player on either of the sides or something in that direction. Anyway, some sort of selection to manual/auto balance the server. I know this is hard to do but today there is no choice in either way on a public server for the admin. It should not be mandatory but selectable by choice of the mission designer or server admin. Balancing game servers have been here for several years and are done quite successfully by the FPS games industry.

90% of VH's servers are open and we regularly have 8-10 people in there.

I write the active runway in the mission brief and any other rules I expect to be followed. If people choose to ignore them, I will warn them once which will promptly be followed by a kick if they proceed to break the server rules. I've only ever kicked 1 person.

I do not require teamspeak or membership - Open servers are a great way to meet new pilots and learn from each others skills. However, I do understand that when I am leading a formation of 5 or 6 aircraft through aerobatics, I do not want to be typing like a 'mad man' trying to get some dumb punk to obey the rules... A DCS Dedicated server would solve a lot of these issues... If multiple people could have server admin rights to manage the server including a ban list and changing missions etc... It would be a very valuable tool.

64 player open servers, with human controlled fastmovers , A2G planes, tanks, helicopters, tankers, Awacs, JTAC , ground force commanders etc and all this on a STABLE connection would lift DCS up into an area which was never been reached by any other commercial use Sim producer. (commercial meaning: Not for Military only)

And it would manifest EDs very own idea behind DCS: a fully controllable simulated digital battlefield.

What would sort out the comms issue is a ingame voice com system tied to the UHF and VHF radios just like F4 BMS....Heck even FSX has that.

That works OK for mirror missions (Both sides have F-15's and A-10's and their ways points are basically the same). But in other cases, not so much. Especially if people don't have all the modules. You may only own DCS F-15, but Red side, which is only Flankers is at a numbers disadvantage, will force the new player on to the that side.

I'd rather be on the side outnumbered 10 to 1 than forced to fly something I don't want to fly. Making this optional would be good, but I also kind of fear it becoming over used. Usually players are able to sort things out by themselves. Perhaps something to mitigate this would be balance tolerance. In other words, the auto balance does not kick in until the imbalance between team size reaches a certain threshold, like 1.25:1, 2:1, or 3:1.

Give voIP with few features like wing voice only, to all voice or friend list in DCS and there will be more talkative people.

Regarding overall passworded servers - it is owner's decision. It is pathetic to have 80% pass protected servers but if the owner decided to, then it is his issue only.

ED could finally make something a'la internal Hyperlobby and some filters to filter pass protected servers out :)

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

The one thing I wish DCS MP came with is a checkbox that says "Display locked servers" so I can uncheck it. It´s quite a burden to log on these days only to see locked servers all over the place, forcing you to go and search for the three of four unlocked ones.

Well I dont think anyone "owes" the community an open server.

But maybe ED could have set one up by now...

I sympathise with the OP, but in the absence of dedicated servers with proper scripting and auto admin abilities its better to password.

If you want to fly with randoms then you can always host your own server and keep it unpassworded. I think then you'll come to realise how annoying it is when then airfield is unusable because of so many crashed aircraft or when you get shot down randomly to the text of 'LOL' in the chat system.

Perhaps one day we'll get a dedicated server where we can script it to filter out these idiots.
