So SimCity. Who's getting it

Hi all,

Ok I know this isn't a sim technically. But the new Simcity is out next week. Looks quite fun, I know I certainly enjoyed the hr Beta earlier this month. As its all online this time, I was wondering which of my fellow Pilots from DCS will be running for mayor.

I appreciate that this simcity outing isn't for everyone as they have made quite a few changes, and the always online requirement has upset a lot of people, but that aside.

To buy or not to buy, that is the question.

I must say that I'm pretty skeptic about new titles (especially when EA is involved), but I tried beta and I was pleasantly surprised!

Many people said that new Simcity is going to be bad since cities are too small, but when you discover the possibilities, it's really not a problem.

But to be honest, I don't like the price at all. This is the kind of game that I will surely enjoy, but it's not like I'm gonna play it for hundreds of hours like flightsims or other games I like. It should be around $40 IMHO. Next thing is dependency on servers. They shut it down or start maintenance and I can't play singleplayer game?

I am avid city builder since sc2k. In sc4 I have a region that I'm working on and off for over 6 years now, quite proud of it.

Naturally i purchased the premium version. Joined the first betabtest and network stress/beta test event last night. It is fun yes , and whrn it kicked us out i was so ready for more. but those small city sizes and not having any control over region is a big step backwards. I really hope they will introduce bigger regions and bigger cities in the full game. Or at least in form of expansion down the road

so you all fine with EA mining your data via origin ? or is that inconsequencial ?

i also see it as a more of a town builder now, because anti piracy methods have interfered with game play to such an extent that you cant build just anywhere on the maps. dont get me wrong "i wants it", but on my terms. and please. no smart comments about my opinion, you will likely just show your ignorance.

Always online drm, no thanks

Indeed. Its so not funny or acceptable that the game seems designed around it by default and explicitly to accomodate such mentality, Small towns requiring persistant loading by design! sheesh. what that means is they couldnt concieve a larger than simcity 4 or cities xl city building sim because of what stood in the way. the technology is fine its there for sure and ready and waiting but no, EA, origin and drm all stood in the way. its lame but only because i was so interested before the reality came. it could have been more but i understand its probally great for what it is. i`ll enjoy youtube lets play video for this though.

theres another not so grand but unique city/town thing that captures my eye is WildFireWorlds a create a rioting city simulator. it has this pretty nice papercraft design behind its elements.

Played the 4hr beta. I know you guys are all against the always online nature of the game, but just that small demo of cooperative play with others in the region has me pretty excited about this game.

excites me too but well, ive drawn a line, my bullcrap radar is out in full force and no matter how immediatly exciting it is, simcity 5 should have been about somthing else other than a simple sale to a new generation of gamers. it had heritage and grandeur. not any more. its all made too generic to sell too to many people. and its upon this very premise that attention is not payed to what these gargantuan companies and corperations are doing and twisting us into. its like saying screw the politics, screw the morales, screw everything because the game is good. ill sell every notion of whats right out the window because the game is good lol. its just wrong on so many levels.

I will probably get it, but I am considering waiting a couple months to see how it turns out. There is so much negativity (antihype?) surrounding it at all corners of the internet that I don't want to waste $60 just for it to flop and get shut down.

I'm also torn. I really-really want a new Sim City, but I'll make sure to get some reviews under my belt before I plop down money on it. Nothing hurts so bad as when a franchise is reawakened but in a bad way... (See that new Aliens game, for example.)

Please don't mention a certain Aliens game EtherealN, I'm still having upset nights over that. ;) Such a wasted opportunity.

As to Simcity, yes I can see people's objections to the new format. I've played every simcity there is and I will agree its different and the maps are too small.

However, that said after playing the beta, I must say I have no concerns over it. So long as you are not expecting Simcity 4, which it isn't. Can't think even EA can argue different.

It is a very fun game and quite addictive. It does have huge potential and if they give us larger maps, which has already been suggested are coming, then it will be fantastic. It has quite a personal feeling to the city, you feel quite involved in it, and I can't wait to play it. Although as EA we know that there will be a lot of DLC, which maybe they should have included in the original game. Sadly that's a sign of the times as everything seems to do that now. Not saying its right, but on the other hand, there's nothing I can do to change it either, so I won't wind myself up over it.

Same applies to the always online requirement. I really hate this, as I would really like to be able to use it when I'm away on holiday etc, when I won't have Internet access. Sadly most companies think that we have Internet everywhere and are all pirates so force this on us. Again it's not the first game to do it, it certainly will not be the last and I really don't think there is anything we can do to stop it. So I'm not gonna worry about it, and just enjoy the game.

By all means wait for reviews, I certainly am glad I cancelled my Aliens CM pre order and read some reviews first, considering how it turned out. Just wished I did the same with Duke Nukem. ;)

Look at it, as a sims spin off, rather than a true simcity spinoff, and you won't be disappointed.

It is extremely good fun.

For those who are getting it, please don't send your crims and pollution over to me. :)

Preordered it today, boxed version. With the price being what it is, I might as well get a proper box for it! :D

I also played the beta, so I more or less know how it'll be like. Looking forward to it.
