fair point, but you are missing the point, a benchmark is a standard point against anything else that already existed not something that is yet to exist.

so is VRS better than something like Jane's F/A-18? and keep in mind that actually I'm asking about the plane fidelity only, not the sim/environment in which it plugged in... with this, even based on what I only saw I think it's safe to say that VRS is of a superior fidelity than Jane's or any previous F-18 sim so with that alone it's quite worthy as the benchmark for now.

I do agree though that they should've ported the VRS into DCS :(

The VRS Superhornet is much more detailed than the Superhornet in Janes F/A-18E. What it does not yet have though is ACLS which Janes F/A-18E has but aside that there is a lot more on the VRS Superhornet.

It's sad that people accept the VRS Superhornet as a benchmark, but that's the state of flight sims. It's riddled with compromises and the handling qualities of the flight model are presently wildly inaccurate, but it's really the only recent publicly available Hornet. (Super or otherwise.) If you are impatient and have the dough, why not. If you are very discerning (demanding?) I would wait for the "real thing."

As far as carrierops is concerned FSX and addons like VRS Superhornet are the benchmark. There is no other sim that models carrierops better for the PC especially with the vLSO. Another thing is comparing VRS Superhornet to what we had before the FSX version:

1/ there was no decent Hornet FMs, the stock acceleration one is quite bad.(even if its a legacy hornet)

2/ no other dev has done a Superhornet addon let alone any jet combat aircraft in FSX with as much detail.

3/ they modelled weapons and external stores, compared to the FSX acceleration hornet which had none and only basic avionics.

4/ MP combat capability and also we are finally able to shoot other aircraft down and destroy ground objects. Could do none of that before VRS Tacpac.

5/ SEAD- SAMs can actually shoot you down and the aircraft can suffer battle damage.

A lot of the above never existed before VRS Superhornet in FSX so yes they are indeed the benchmark as far as FSX is concerned. You cannot compare it to DCS and its carrierops is still ahead of any other sim.

I am eager to fly a carrier aircraft. I currently own both DCS and FSX, because FSX caters to my love of commercial aviation. I really badly want a very realistic and good looking +well performing carrier aircraft. The F/A-18C by ED or the F/A-18E by Coretex Designs are obviously the most promising ones, but it could take a very long time for these to be released, and I might already be in college, which would mean I won't have any time at all.

My question is, should I go for the VRS F/A-18E or is it worth waiting for the F/A-18's for DCS?

Thanks in advance!

I am not waiting. Best to get my feet wet now. When DCS gets their F-18 I will get that, too. At least I will be up to speed on the F/A-18E 's systems. I just purchased the VRS TacPack. I played with the Superbug last year for awhile.

Going to fly with these guys:

Downloadable stuff:

There are alternatives within FSX:

My post, this thread, I go by DieHard to their forum, also.

And lately I have also been experimenting with the FC3 flyable F-18C mod here to DCS, my Message #7:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1928513#post1928513

You can fly the F-18C flyable in FC3 to the Multiplayer server Virtual-Aerobatics. They have slots for the jet and a CV carrier. It is the easiest way to do carrier ops I know of.

There is another DCS mod. I think it is Moa's Stallturn mod for FC2 updated to FC3. Most all these guys are the Aussie crew. I have found them my NY wee hours around 4AM on the DCS Multiplayer server list down at the bottom of the list. I could not find these guys other than this:

If ED ever does do the F/A-18C I am sure it will be worth the wait. But I will be honest, there really is no proof that they are even working on it. Based on the timeframe needed to develop the A-10c I would have to say it's still many years away. Probably closer to 4 years. If you look closely at the threads on the forum you will see that the only people talking about the F/A-18c is us not ED. I hope I am wrong, but time will tell.

You are wrong.

They have already stated that the next DCS title will be th F/A-18c; granted that is subject to change if something comes up. It's also not four years off, they have been working on it sometime back shortly after the release of A-10c.

Honestly, I would not expect any new on Hornet until this time next year at the earliest.

Although I disagree with some of Risk comments, he does offer some points of argument. Has anyone seen WIP of F-18C besides an external model. Matt did mention though that dont expect any news of the F-18 until next year and that was posted around late August IIRC. If news does surface at what level of maturity will the module be? I agree with Revelation on the point that it is not four years off. No one really knows though. At this point I am hoping to get news on anything. It's been almost as quiet as a funeral home around here lately. :music_whistling:

Its worth the wait BUT:

ED have already admitted they are putting it on the back burner "don't expect news till summer 14". Which, in Russian means 'if the devs think they can be bothered and if they can work out how to get carrier ops and SAR to work then they might tell me they are looking to work on it and release it some time in the next 2-5 years so long as they don't get distracted by something shiny.

And I thought Google Translate did a lousy job of translation...

I'll concede to one of Sharpe's points. There is a certain percentage of the DCS population that would not buy both versions of the F/A-18. I'm probably one of them. I'd like to support ED but I don't like buying software / modules that I won't get around to using. I bought the A-10C last December when it was on sale and have spent a whole 5 minutes on it. But that is mostly because I don't have a proper joystick. Anyways, if I had the choice, I would choose the F/A-18C just because I grew up loving that plane.

One question. As far as the A2G radar modeling goes. Is it safe to assume that ED will have to lay the ground work for that so other parties can/should adopt it to follow the "standard"?

I find your lack of faith (in ED) disturbing.

As far as I recall the Hornet has been in the works since before DCS: World was released (around the time of that trailer for World or CA from a couple years ago which ended on a Hornet launched from the catpult).

4 years seems plain silly to be honest. The thickest of work needed for the Hornet is in the systems. ED and 3rd parties (as far as NDA allows us to know) have been working together to tackle issues with modelling the avionics. Just like a supersonic AFM paves the way to the rest, the same goes for avionics.

I expect once the first 4th gen aircraft is released, the rest will come by soon enough. If bezcl is planning a 2013 release on their 3rd gen plane, 4th gen should start coming from next year.

As a note, the Eurofighter and F-15E aren't that close to release, the MiG-21 is. RAZBAM is working in a trainer, VEAO is finishing theirs. Both have a fair amount of work in cockpits and etc, but there's a lot more than that.

I'd like to know why everyone assumes work on the hornet was put on hold for EDGE and DCS WWII, lol

EDGE, is a Image Renderer, the DirectX/GFX Engine Coding Guys working on that aren't usually the same guys that program the Electric, Hydraulic and AFM Systems for Modules, Let alone the Guys that do the 3d/texture work.

DCS WWII is a Partner Project by RRG, ED Themselves arent Building DCSWWII, RRG is building the content, and hopefully the RRG Guys have their own Systems Coders :).

Probably someone mistook the concept of multirole aircraft with multirole programmer :music_whistling:

The only thing that'd make some sense to hold off until EDGE is mostly done (which, by the latest updates, it seems to be to a good extent) would be the externals if to optimise them somehow... but the externals are done already so :D

Apart from some Animations, externals look to be nearly complete, Never Really looked to see if there was a Damage Model/Animations/Parts, pretty sure there is.

Edge will prolly allow Easier Implementation of Ground mapping Radar....

Though I think that was brought up before.. either by some one else or myself...

This has been my thought also for some time and the reason why the Hornet has been pushed back was to get EDGE in place to do as you just mentioned. To me, if this is the case, it just makes sense to go this route instead of having to redo mapping radar over again. I'm just speculating though.

^ hope you guys are right. It's my dirty little quiet hope that ED are still working on their F/A18 with a view to a rapid delivery sometime in 14 (sooner the better) just as soon as EDGE comes out. In fact, if I am being honest I once kinda hoped they would release EDGE and announce the imminent release of F/A18 in the near future.

-Ah to dream and hope ;) one way or the other I am a cantankerous impatient soul and just want some Hi Fi, modern, fixed wing and multi role ASAP.

Every time I feel impatient about the Hornet, I think back to one of Wags' posts where he says:

6- We understand and fully empathize with the desire of many members here for high-fidelity module aircraft ASAP. Rest assured that they are coming and we are certainly not delaying them in favor of lesser fidelity modules. However, it seems some here vastly underestimate the amount of time and money it takes to create one of these.

(emphasis mine)

Then I feel a little better. :)
