Flagrum Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 EDGE in version 4, used by three commercial projects, with stunning maps. No wonder Nevada takes that long ... (yeah, somehow I am really feeling a bit grumpy after finding out of all this. sry. I better get out of this thread ... )
Royraiden Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) Looks fantastic. Edited September 16, 2013 by Royraiden [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
159th_Viper Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Was it in development for DCS:W? No, these are maps for Concorde XXI. JackDant Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 No, these are maps for Concorde XXI. Vids are however a good indication that we are in for a treat  Do you know that for certain? Because the actual quote was: Those are examples of terrain based on EDGE technology that will also be used for the Normandy map. However, those two images are from an unannounced map that is in development. (my emphasis) The implication there was that the map is currently being developed and that it would be announced at some point. Not that it's already deployed in a different product.
Chain Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I have heard that Mi-17s operate from Ft. Rucker. :suspect: To be honest I don't think we will ever get these maps. Chain System: Windows 10 | i7-7700K @ 4.5 Ghz | 32GB of RAM | Nvidia GTX 1080, 3440x1440 | DELL Ultrawide U3415W | Samsung 960 Evo M.2 and 2 TB Seagate Barracuda | TM Warthog Hotas | SLAW F-16 Pedals | Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive PRO VR + High fidelity F/A-18C simpit :)

Because the actual quote was: (my emphasis) The implication there was that the map is currently being developed and that it would be announced at some point. Not that it's already deployed in a different product. It could mean that those maps, that are already relased for different projects, might be reworked atm to be included in DCS.
159th_Viper Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Do you know that for certain? My inference based on their website: Our newly established Daleville Training Facility right outside the gates of Fort Rucker, Alabama That and the fact that they run a Mi-17 Sim associated with a company in the Ukraine. Not that it's already deployed in a different product. It could be that this presentation of the Corsica map is only for visalisation purposes. Just to show some nice landscape. Adding the "things" (collision model/road logics...) to that map for using it with DCS could be taking much longer... Roadrunner Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 i dont know what media they will use, but from the pictures at the kickstarter page, i could assume they make korsika for us, in the end they are showing product pictures that should resemble the final product in appearance and quality, at least my opinion. take that one: use google maps and search for "Ajaccio". https://maps.google.de/maps?q=korsika&hl=de&ll=41.926133,8.775287&spn=0.025384,0.051198&sll=48.917413,11.407993&sspn=5.740184,13.106689&hnear=Korsika,+Frankreich&t=h&z=15 :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "There's nothing to be gained by second guessing yourself. Linx Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 What we see there is not based on PCs as we know/have them. So what's the point of it comparing apples to bananas? edit: what I mean is, yes, EDGE seems to be really great, but on not-so-capable hardware some features certainly need to be toned/scaled down. But by how much - we can not even remotely tell. Yes, you're probably right. Our machines might not handle this engine to the fullest right now, but DCS will be here for years to come and our hardware will just keep on getting better exponentially.
OttoPus Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Lots of ground object and details, and very smooth moving. Not so beautiful to look though (especially long distance mountains, colors, atmospheric scattering and so on), I really hope we'll the cookies AND the milk :D
VapoR Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Looks amazing! Will be a great place to take the upcoming Mirage 2000! Looks MUCH better than what we've been shown of Nevada so far.
zaelu Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Well... A10C was initially a commercial project... How big is this Corsica map? 49 for each airport is a bit big price but for a map... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] I5 4670k, 32GB, GTX 1070, Thrustmaster TFRP, G940 Throttle extremely modded with Bodnar 0836X and Bu0836A, Warthog Joystick with F-18 grip, Oculus Rift S - Almost all is made from gifts from friends, the most expensive parts at least
159th_Viper Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 How big is this Corsica map? Well, the entire island is only 8,680 km square so much too small for anything but Combined Arms and limited Helo Ops I would have thought. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Flagrum Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Well, the entire island is only 8,680 km square so much too small for anything but Combined Arms and limited Helo Ops I would have thought. for the relation: georgia is about 69000 km² ... and we also have parts of russia. So if it is only the island, it would be less than 1/8, perhaps more 1/10.

Moore's law can fix all those problems for you in pretty much no time at all. ;) Even if we assume that what was seen there is running on specialized hardware (we don't know that either, remember), engine capability is still engine capability. So if it is only the island, it would be less than 1/8, perhaps more 1/10. Depending on how much of Russia you count, the Caucasus map has anywhere between 150,000 and 200,000 km² of detailed terrain.

Они, насколько я знаю, не предназначены для DCS. which google translates to Commercial fitness equipment, it is not for the PC. They are, as far as I know, not intended for DCS.And moore my a** - what our systems can do in, like 2-5 years ... pffft. What we see in those videos is just not representative for us now and I only try to be not too overenthusiastic. 1
Geert Hooghe Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 IMHO DCS did far better concerning the clouds instead of this. The scenery is nice but remember...we're flying in the air...where the clouds are ! Scenery is important too but clouds MUST be as realistic as possible ! Like I said...IMHO ! :-) 1
Lib Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Does anybody know if EDGE will bring us the possibility of "Hyperthreading" or using more than 2 cores ?
HiJack Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 49 for each airport is a bit big price but for a map... Yes I was just pointing it out. The interesting question will be if all these maps will all work in DCS World or are they licensed products that do not mix. We could end up redesigning the world over and over. And one "ditch" is licensed for one product so you need to make your own "ditch" if you would like to share it with the community.
ZMEY-HS- Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Depending on how much of Russia you count, the Caucasus map has anywhere between 150,000 and 200,000 km² of detailed terrain. Yeah, its somewhere around 180k sq km.
HiJack Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) You can get some serious good terrain and weather for FSX This is from a "real" weather engine that costs 50 bucks: Likewise you can buy airports for about 50 bucks. Is that the way for DCS with the EDGE engine? Edited September 16, 2013 by HiJack
159th_Viper Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Likewise you can buy airports for about 50 bucks. Is that the way for DCS with the EDGE engine? Well, yes, if you're going to release Starr Bumble Bee II or similar modules. For all else with flames shooting out of collective a$$es on take-off one definitely needs a very, very large map :D Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career?
