ModMan 7 is available and introduce the possibility to add a new skin slot automatically ! the easy way (aka user friendly) to add new skin slot is now available for users Skin artist you have only two things to do 1- making(use ED tools) the .CDDS file and packing it in the modman ZIP package 2- Making a skin.lma7 text file and packing it in the modman package To pack it, you must use the new button in the Mod Maker windows asking you for a skin.lma7 file ONLY ONE skin in a ZIP/RAR file Here is a skin.lma7 example (same as included in the skin sample) [skin] file = Bazar\World\Shapes\KA-50.skins argument = 70 otherfile1 = Bazar\World\Shapes\KA-50-BLADE.skins otherfile2 = Bazar\World\Shapes\KA-50-NOSE.skins otherfile3 = Bazar\World\Shapes\KA-50-TAIL.skins otherfile4 = Bazar\World\Shapes\KA-50-WING-L.skins otherfile5 = Bazar\World\Shapes\KA-50-WING-R.skins l1 = material = {"KA-50-lamp", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-02.bmp"}; l2 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT1", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-01.bmp"}; l3 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT1_M", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-01.bmp"}; l4 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT2", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-02.bmp"}; l5 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT3", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT2-DEF-03.bmp"}; l6 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT4", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-04.bmp"}; l7 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT5", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-05.bmp"}; l8 = material = {"KA-50-PAINT6", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-06.bmp"}; l9 = material = {"KA-50-Vtulka_met", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-02.bmp"}; l10 = material = {"SOPLA_KA-50-PAINT3", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT2-DEF-03.bmp"}; l11 = material = {"KA-50-gear-rubber", "Standart", "KA-50-PAINT24-DEF-05.bmp"}; l12 = material = {"KA-50_ST-rm_paint1", "Standart", "Ka-50_St_Paint2.bmp"}; l13 = material = {"KA-50_Lifting_rotor_mast", "Standart", "KA-50-LRM-24.bmp"}; l14 = material = {"KA-50_LRM_Part", "Standart", "KA-50-LRMpart-24.bmp"}; l15 = material = {"KA-50_LRM-CENTRE", "Standart", "KA-50-LRM_centre-24.bmp"}; l16 = material = {"KA-50-LRM_B", "Standart", "KA-50-LRM_B-24.bmp"}; l17 = material = {"KA-50_BORT_NUMBERs", "Standart", "empty.tga"}; l18 = material = {"KA-50_Turkey_Numbers", "Standart", "TactNumbers-USAF-black.tga"}; [color_scheme] country = {B2A43A73-E650-49B0-98B9-F67A53DA95FD} cnt_unit = {3457BB1E-523F-4C24-BBEA-58D028623F05} color_scheme = {3448843E-09C4-4DF3-8A7A-2707AE267519} color_name = ModMan7 test sample - Digital camo file = Scripts\Database\helicopters\Ka-50.lua file is the path to the main aircraft .skins file Argument is a key identifying skin list in a .skins file (ie : Ka-50.skins file) otherfile# (# is number) is the path to the alternate .skins file used for aircraft damage. country and cnt_unit are key identifying some sections in db_countries.lua file color_scheme is a key you must generate for each skin you create. color_name is a a name you give to your skin note that it's working also for other planes and helicopters ! just set the 'file = ' values (and others useful values) a GUID key generator is available in the modman Option window but you can use any GUID key generator utility. !!!! the KEY GENERATOR IS NOT WORKING AT ALL on some PC !!! so use this ONLINE key generator: http://www.somacon.com/p113.php this key is used for this line in skin.lma7 file : color_scheme = {3448843E-09C4-4DF3-8A7A-2707AE267519} (replace with you own GUID key) each skin must have an UNIQUE GUID key, so you MUST generate your own GUID key ModMan will add automatically the skin entries in the .cfg .skins and .lua files (and will remove it during uninstall) ModMan will also calculate the skin index automatically for users, you will have only to install or uninstall the skin mod You can now add all the upcoming skins from artists as new skin slot (if they package it in the good way) Don't install anymore skin mods overwriting ie: ka-50.skins, ka-50.lua , db_countries.lua and config.lua and so on. Wait for a an updated package using SKIN.LMA7 feature package. (you may contact your beloved skin artist) you can download ModMan 7.1.1.0 here http://www.checksix-fr.com/bibliotheque/index.php?Fichier=5767 7.1.1.0 ------- - When adding a Ka-50 skin, entries from skin.lma7 will be also added automatically to the KA-50 *.skins damage file for other aircraft you need to specify the filelist in skin.lma7 file (see DCS_new_skin_slot.doc documentation) - DCS_new_skin_slot.doc documentation updated 7.1.0.9 (hotfix) ------- - When adding a skin with index number even (ie: 2.0, 3.0) , the skin will be now added properly 7.1.0.8 (hotfix) ------- - Fix an obvious bug in file management system about some hang during mod scan/install process (ie: for 'A-10-1.0.zip' lockon mod from simmod) you can download ModMan7 skin sample here (it's a VikVaughan's skin) http://www.checksix-fr.com/files/modman/ModMan7_skin_sample.zip Others ModMan7 skins compliant with new format Italian Army by Ciniko http://www.checksix-fr.com/files/modman/ModMan7_Ka-50_Italian_army.zip download mirrors are allowed, don't ask for ;) best regards Skypat ps: this is working only for DCS products, not for lockon1 point

Instead of having a bunch of threads for my little cockpit build I though I'd make a combined one to post updates in etc Here are the two previous threads: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=32054 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=32392 Update: I've been working on the targeting panel and the collective head during Christmas, both are now fully functional. The collective plate + thumbjoy etc will be painted black (or maybe I should just let the bare aluminum show and just paint the plate). I use the analog thumbjoy to slew the Skvhal sensor, makes it much easier to be precise with the senor. Below are some pictures of the collective head and the targeting panel + links to some youtube videos. Some new vids on the targeting panel and the collective head. /Oakes1 point

Is it possible to create a third party campaign generator for DCS? I ask because the lack of a real Head-to-Head element makes long-term playability questionable in my opinion, at least in multi-player. What if a server could, after shut-down, pass along unit position, strength, and supply level to the 3rd party generator, and then that generator could then "rewrite" the mission with new unit levels and tasks that the server could then start with at re-boot? This may have been tried with LOMAC but LOMAC has the H2H element that makes it fun even in static missions that run the same day after day, month after month. DCS needs something different. The image I have in mind is the MultiVipers server running Falcon 4:AF. Campaigns run for days or weeks before one side claims victory. Players care about the outcome though their individual roles in that outcome are minimal. Players can either fly Packages generated by the campaign engine or pick their own targets and grab some friends to help take 'em out. The illusion that you are part of something bigger makes for a much better MP experience. I'm not suggesting that ED change anything (...or...much)--DCS is the greatest sim yet made. I'm just asking if it is possible to have an evolving on-line battlefield. Regards, Smokin' Hole1 point

:)1 point

Yeah possible, but bear in mind I didn't install Birdy's scenery mod 1.3 + Merzifon when I took these screenies. This Birdy's mod doubles the qty of trees when using high scenery in LOFC! I have like 7 road bases placed throughout the map (4 in Crimea; 3 in Caucasus, IIRC). I'll go check ASAP if some of them are more hidden and post screenies back!1 point

Opinions differ on what the "essentials" of a dynamic campaign are. For some, any randomness - regardless of realism (e.g. should the enemy AI flight path really be going through a mountain?) - counts as a dynamic campaign. For others, Falcon 4's real-time GUI sets the bar. One middle-of-the-road criteria I like is, "if I destroy a bridge in mission 1, then enemy units don't cross that bridge in mission 2." For that to be satisfied, it isn't sufficient for TacView to record simple score-keeping data, "player 1 destroyed three buildings" - it's necessary to identify which buildings (or tanks, airplanes, etc.) were destroyed. I'd surprised if you could obtain this level of detail from lua-exported mission data, regarding destroyed map objects at least. Speaking as someone who's tried, I don't recommend this project to you. Too many DCS features are still "up in the air" and being changed by ED from original Flanker 2.0 code. If ED can remove the entire Su-25T flight model, they won't hesitate to remove whatever Taciew exports a 3rd party DC depends on when they feel the need - as they did with the saved campaign data that the SkyWars DC used. What does ED need it for, anyway? A meaningful dynamic campaign is not like a new skin or terrain add-on - it's an active, integrated computer program that depends on cooperation from the sim developer. The scraps of, almost accidentally-exported data you describe are not a substitute for a working partnership.1 point

Not trolling mate. Just stating an opinion. Many here dislike Steam alot more then the current protection system. Simple as that. There are ads and resource usage while Steam is running as well. It is just as I said..bloat ware. I do not want a built in PC games store for dummies and all the extra bloat that comes with it. I do not want comercials and advertisement in my face. I do not want anything more then to purchase what I want to play, put it where I want to install it on my system and then play it. If I want to see all the ads that you see in the screenshot I can just hit gogamer or ebworld and do it there. At least then when I close my browser it is gone. Nothing is on my system trying to sell me anything. There is no doubt current system in Black Shark is LESS intrusive then Steam. Also it is completely transparent as I said. Install, activate and play. IMHO if Black Shark were to be released on Steam than that is fine for those who would tolerate or desire such software on their system but lets not pretend it is elegant or any thing really different then a glorified game lobby and online store. Exactly that which many of us intuitivley avoid putting on our systems. Out1 point

When addressing the subject of simulation, IMO there are many particulars that can be specifically treated. Any simulation needs to be clear what its goal is. A clearly defined goal of what we wish to achieve via the simulation package will produce the template and guidelines in producing/choosing that simulation in the first place. There are studies *out there* arguing that a fully featured high fidelity simulation (particularly one that simulates an air combat environment) is not (counter intuitively) necessarily the best approach for honing particular skills in the fluid/dynamic air combat environment. In other words, we start from what skills we're trying to acquire, then having a simulated environment that focuses only on that aspect. Having more than this becomes a distraction. To this end a fully featured simulator that models a *dynamic campaign* doesn't usefully target a specific set for skill acquisition, because the parameters within the campaign are *dynamic* and thus not able to be controlled to produce any measurable outcomes ... unless the metric used is the degree of pleasure we gain through *playing* make believe :P. I think that DCS straddles that area between a simulation tool and an entertainment package; and IMO (again) I find the TE (OF4.7) and ME (Lock On FC) to be much more *useful* tools than Falcon's Dynamic campaign ... My 2 cents, Cheers.1 point

Thanks for posting that. On my machine, Win 7, same settings as my previous 3.6GHz run, I got the following: 2009-01-14 01:42:35 - dcs Avg: 85.027 - Min: 29 - Max: 201 For some reason view control stopped being controlled properly within the recording so I stopped the benchmark at that point. Not sure what that was about. Is it intentional to have the map screen included during playback? Seems strange, that must be where the 201 fps came from. [edit] Oh and Maximus, I can't recall where I read it, but it was a source I thought I could trust who stated that the smoke of the flares was tweaked between the Russian and English release such that it didn't impact the frame rate in the English version nearly as much as the Russian release did. That might not be accurate though!1 point

I want to start by saying yes, yes, yes, well done and thank you very much to DCS, Eagle Dynamics and any one else responsible for Black Shark. I have been waiting for a good Helicopter sim for a long time. It has finally come. Ok, now that my feelings are clear, I offer a little bit of critisism. A medium level avionics setting would be good. the easy setting is just to arcade for me. I will get used to advanced avionics so it cant be too... complex but being able to start on a medium avionics setting would be nice. I am thrilled with the real flight dynamics and physics so I have no Idea on the arcade flight setting. I have felt trim force feedback, but I have not felt any stick shake. Probably have not been in a nessacary situation yet. Hard to tell wether to swap feedback axes or not. Now if there is a rescue chopper added complete with winch, I will be thrilled. I now you all are saying there are other titles that can do that. I am familiar with some, but I like Eagle Dynamics scenery and editors much better. Bottom Line there is not a better Helo simmulator out there and I only look for this one to get better. Thanx, Vetic1 point

I think Feuerfalke makes a very good point about flares drawing in attention. Currently it is already modeles for AI aircraft (they more easely detect targets that launch flares) and I hope at one point such advanced detection logics will also apply to ground units. In some situations running a pre-emptive flare program might do more harm than it helps. Attack helicopters depend a lot on operating undedected (unfortunately this aspect is currently still underdeveloped in Black Shark), so launching flares will be a tradeoff between security against missiles vs. not getting shot at in the first place.1 point

I really do not agree with you here. While flying with friends, we often have fun trying to spot specific things on the ground and identifying them. Also, we often have to search and spot for other air traffic. I can assure you that trying to spot a low flying helicopter is really not an easy task in real life... and it has nav lights and beacon running. Same with ground objects... it's nearly impossible, especially and the typical engagement range of the Ka-50. I bet it takes real combat pilots a lot of training to reach efficient target spotting and identification skills. While I play this little spotting game in real life, the targets I'm trying to spot are not hidding. They are not covered with camo patterns. Spotting targets is much more easier in DCS than in real life, regardless of the settings. I am no combat pilot, but I'll be really surprised if anyone confirms that is not the case.1 point

This is very true, look at this screenshot (png without destructive compression so the image looks exactly like in game). There is a Mi-24V closer than 1 km and within the HUD. Can you spot him? (Ps. he also have his green/red wing-nav light turned on!) :music_whistling:1 point

I'd just like to post my opinion and say that I like steam and have bought many games on/with it. And I also enjoy the opportunity of calling my flatmate a hobo each time he joins an online server. No problems whatsoever. That being said, I also have no problems with buying games outside steam and no problems with starforce. I bought the english Black Shark with no hesitation or thought and I thoroughly enjoy playing it each and every day :)... I'm a happy camper. Kisses, hugs and flowers!1 point

While all this advice works right now in Black Shark, I'll post a warning: One of these days the seekers on those MANPADS (and all heaters in the game, really) will get a code review. When this happens, you might see the same thing happening that happens RL: Once that missile locks on, you can spam loads of flares, but it won't matter one bit. The reason you use flares pre-emptively is because you want that missile locked on a flare, or the operator to not fire because he's not trusting the missile to lock onto your chopper rathen than a flare. Spamming flares will help reduce the missile Pk, but not to the degree you see right now in DCS. This is why you should practice using flares pre-emptively, not re-actively.1 point

UM...Not sure to feel bad for Mastiff or LMAO...You just can't win, buddy. :D Back OT: I don't know why you're worried Reaper. I've read a few other threads like this here and at the simHQ boards by heli pilots who are worried that once the fixed wings start coming out then "their" sim will stop being "shown the love". The answer is that all aircraft released for DCS will be shown the same amount of care and detailing regardless of whether they are fixed wing or rotary. ED plays no favorites (at least not to my knowledge). Remember that after the A-10C comes out, it will (90% certain on this) be followed 9 months later by an apache (the A model). This will probably be followed by a few more fixed wings, and later on down the road, they will release a Hind. Eventually the engine will get a face lift and you'll see (it's being speculated, no confirmation that I could find) collidable trees, improved optimization, better ground and air AI, new weather effects, along with a whole new list of bugs to find and patch up. :) What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter if you come for the rotaries or the fixed wings. You'll get the same amount of attention that every one else is getting. Rotaries are not better than fixed wings and vice-versa. Some people are worried about how Multiplayer will work once fixed wings come out and rotaries become the "helpless underdogs". They are forgetting that you don't have to include both types of aircraft in the same online mission. There will most likely be several rotary-only servers for L33T rotary fiends who wouldn't fly something that couldn't hover even if their wife threatened to leave them (as someone who plays both sides myself you should be grateful I used "fiend" instead of "snob" :D). There will be all types of servers. Some for just fixed wing, some that will probably be uber-realistic requiring teamwork and coordinated cover operations from both fixed wings and helis. Rotary nuts worrying about "their" sim being ruined by jet jockeys who won't play nice when they're on the opposing side is stupid and pointless IMO. This sim doesn't belong to helicopter enthusiasts and it doesn't belong to the jet junkies. It belongs to all of us. You should stop worrying about your own slice of the pie and start thinking about how to make it work for everyone.1 point

You're passing the blame. And the blame is Windows'es at best. Anyway, in the folder tree you'll see, Desktop stands on top, below that there should be things like Network, a falder named after your username, maybe a folder called Public, and then one called Computer, click that one, you'll see your drives, when clicking the correct one, you should be able to navigate to your DCS install folder. Also, Skypat, when installed to C:\ModMan, in my Vista installation it will still need to be ran as Administrator to ensure full functionality, to avoid having to point ModMan to DCS on every launch. -Z1 point

Hi Right now I use the SIOC KeyboardEmulator for inputs, which works kinda OK for simple commands. Hopefully the PCIP will allow us to send switch position directly to the sim i.e. "put switch 52 to position 4" or similar. Today with key-emulator since most keyboard commands only allow you to toggle switches you have to make sure that the physical switches are in the correct position when you start the sim or you will be out of sync. For outputs, I have no idea at this point how this is going to work, again well see what the PCIP contains I guess. For me the ideal solution would of course be if ED implemented the IOCP protocol into BS *Hint* *Hint* :music_whistling: And again, thank you all for the kind words of encouragement. /Oakes1 point
