Wags has given me the ok to discuss this, so I'd like to bring you up to speed on what has been done with missiles and ECM. ECM: 15s start-up any time you power the ECM on Burn through moved out 25-28nm for fighters with older ECM 23-24nm for fighters with newer ECM 12nm for strategic and tactical bombers featuring powerful ECM sets Missiles: Fuzes have been given more realistic triggering distances - the most powerful are the AIM-120 and R-77. Speeds and ranges have been adjusted to create a good relative representation of these missiles with respect to each other based on real data and corroboration from people in the know. AIM-9 has specifically been significantly sped up, and is almost equal in range and speed to the R-73. This adjustment was done according to RL speed-time-altitude charts for the AIM-9L. For radar guided missiles, the basic range setup is: AIM-7/R-27R < R-77/AIM-120B < AIM-120C < R-27ER. ARH missiles will now track down to very low altitude. No more <10m safe zone. Very significant resistance of radar missiles to chaff unless you put them on your 3-9. Chaff resistance is AIM-120C > Other ARH > SARH Reduced seeker gimbal limits for radar missiles. Again, here ARH are better than SARH. Heat Seekers will not search for targets if launched without a seeker lock. This means launching any heat-seeker without seeker lock will cause that missile to be wasted You must now hold the trigger for a short time in order for a missile to launch The missile proximity fuze is inhibited for a very short time when the missile launches. AI changes: AI will now notch with an accuracy corresponding to their skill. This means that while an excellent AI can lose most of your missiles, an average AI will most likely be hit. While the note on this may be short, the change in gameplay is big. Basic Aircraft changes: F-15C now has an IFF HUD cue for the PDT/STT target The MiG-29C will now have a default payload of 6xR-77 Aircraft flight models adjusted to conform as much as possible to their realistic climb and acceleration capabilities, as well as turning ability. MiG-29C should turn better than in FC1 F-15C now has an energy model based on the -220 engines. All flyable fighter aircraft will now be able to go supersonic with their full payload. The exact top speed depends on what you hang on your wings. Realistic G-Loc model returned to be more realistic. You can sustain a medium to high-g battle for a long time, but if you abuse it and try to hold 8+ for long you're in trouble. Doing a 'g-warm up exercise' for 15-20 sec at 5g or so will better prepare you for a high-g fight, increasing your tolerance to high-g for a few minutes. What is the effect effect of these changes on game play? In general, the idea was to encourage a player to turn away from a missile in order to defeat it. You will notice changes in how missiles behave with respect to chaff especially. For SARH, I would recommend to launch salvoes of two missiles; chaff is not likely to decoy both of them. The best defense is a notch and orthogonal roll, but this means the defender gives up the fight and the attacker has complete advantage - as it should be. Aircraft using SARH vs. ARH equipped aircraft will naturally be at disadvantage, however the notch and otherwise beaming ARH missiles and using decoys at an appropriate distance will work. The longer fuzes mean that maneuvering to dodge the missiles kinematically is now riskier. The best chances of survival are a combination of beaming, maneuvering and countermeasures. Note that I am not talking about long-ranged shots, as those tend to be easier to defeat. I'd like to add that Wags, Yoda and myself campaigned to get much more robust counter-measure rejection (chaff resistance, performance, pk, anything else you'd like to call it ;) ) for SARH missiles in order to not make things both more realistic and not so horribly lopsided. There may have been others but I don't hear and know everything. :) You will find that SARH chaff-resistance is such that someone who could before easily chaff away all your missiles, will have to try extremely hard to decoy just half of them. Note that this is for head-on or near-head-on engagements. Overall, all these changes, including visibility as well, will mean that the BVR engagements will now be moved further out. In addition, most BVR kills will now be beyond visual range in terms of simple head to head engagements, especially at medium and high altitude.2 points

[sarcasm] Let’s delay the release of FC2.0 & DCS: A-10 until the devs can take advantage of DX11. It should take about 2-3 years to rewrite the engine from scratch. Then another 6-9 months to get the actual game scripts working. In that time, as we will have no new flight sims to play on, I will come round your house with my Commodore Amiga, CRT monitor and a null modem cable. We can play Falcon 3.0 multiplayer. By that time DX13.1 will be out. [/sarcasm]2 points

It takes what, a year to introduce a completely new airframe? So if LOMAC is scrubbed for DCS models as what you suggested, then import what, seven planes? That's 7 years of wait time to get up to where they're at right now with FC 2, just under a new brand. Screw that.2 points

Missile range When talking about missile max range it is important to understand what this actually means. If we keep it really simple now and skip all discussions of Rmax/Raero etc. An a2a missile that is stated to have a maximum range of 70 km can actually never fly 70 km over land and hit a stationary target. What is meant by 70 km maximum range is that if you have a target locked 70 km in front of you and fire a missile, the missile might hit if you have absolutely optimal conditions, those are: Both you and your target are flying straight towards each other at reasonably high speeds. Both you and your target are flying very high (think 10.000 m or above) Your target keeps flying straight towards you during entire missile flight. These numbers such as 70km may be given with some marigin of error, so 70 km could likely also include some small room for target maneuvering, but nothing like turning more than a few degrees. (probably<10º). The more your target diverts from the straight nose-to-nose flight path the longer path your missile has to fly. The lower closure the target has to you, the slower the closure between the missile and the target. Radar vs EOS range I don't know the range of the real systems, so I can only speak for the game's implementation. Take the Su27 for example which has both a powerful radar and EOS. Aspect and engine setting (AB flames are huge targets for EOS) play key roles. Head on you can detect targets a2a with radar up to about 120 km. (HI prf) Head on you can detect targets a2a with EOS up to about (Im guessing) 15-30 km (depending on targets throttle setting) Tail on you can detect targets a2a with radar up to about 40 km. (MED prf) Tail on you can detect targets a2a with EOS up to 30-80 km (depending on targets throttle setting) Numbers above are for standard MP fighter type targets. Bigger targets can vary by a lot!1 point

You don't need to educate me on the subject :) I just think that "speed of sound modeling" are too big words not suitable for the new sound engine because my guess is that its "modeling" is limited to sound delay. A simple test will show if I'm right. Set up an AC 10+ km away and hot, closing on supersonic. We shouldn't hear it until it passes the camera. BTW, the best doppler and fly by sound effects I've ever heard were in Flanker 2.0 :P1 point

Lockon/F.C has never been cheaper and you can buy it anywhere online if you can't find it in stores. Frankly PC games in stores are becoming a rare find, let alone anything that's over a year old as console games slowly take over. F.C 2.0 what I gather from Matt's launch post is the FINAL update to the product, a product that many have been playing since day one and have been waiting a LONG time for the next patch (Check out thread patch 1.13). This is the end of the line for the LOMAC series and it's then moving forward with the DCS series. I'm sure in the development process DCS team learned some new things they can later apply to other DCS modules with regards to compatibility etc with F.C 2 and Black Shark among other things. ED is taking all the risk here, they've researched all the possbilities I would assume (money at risk if not) so they know more than anyone here why they do the stuff they do and what's beneficial to them in terms of where they can go/go with the LOMAC series. I was VERY surprised to hear about F.C 2 simply because I always thought Black Shark would have to wait until A-10 possiblity before I could get fixed wing human players into the mix. To me, F.C 2 not only improves my F.C experience, but REALLY improves my Black Shark experience knowing I can call in support from strike/fighters controlled by humans. That alone for me is worth the $30 price tag....but that's just me.1 point

FC2 gets more content and brings Lock On right up to date with the intention that it remains compatible with the DCS series. I know I prefer the idea of DCS with the FC aircraft, rather than DCS with KA50 and A10 and another nine months wait... As to whether it should be a patch or not - ED have taken many months to get FC2 ready and naturally would like a return. I suspect they weighed up the business aspect and I think we're lucky that FC is getting the upgrade at all, especially considering it's taken much longer than planned. I haven't forgotten the price rise, BTW. For me it's what I might expect to pay.1 point

One must take into account that Eagle Dynamics is not like most other gaming companies. As much as I despise that fact it happens to be true. Most games have somewhere between 5-10 patches throughout their lifetime with the frequency of patches becoming less and less as time goes by. Majority of them are just bug fixes, UI additions, or balance fixes, but from time to time real content is added in some form or another. For instance, in Battlefield 2 we got a few new maps, Team Fortress 2 has at least doubled the amount of content in the game since release and its not even an MMO, Company of Heroes has added compatibility patches so all owners of their games can play online no matter their combination of standalone products. Starcraft 1 still receives minor updates to the gameplay mechanics and its over 10 years old. However between Lockon, Flaming Cliffs, and DCS we've had (correct me if I'm wrong) 5 total patches. Their just not that type of company. So unless they ship a game or a patch that carries the digital strain of the Ebola virus, I'm not expecting an additional patch to improve gameplay mechanics or functionality. But alas, they are releasing a payware patch. Such a patch is the first in a long, long time to actually add stuff to the game. As much as I want to join you and push our luck of them actually making additional patches, I've come to the realization that its just not gonna happen.1 point

This: Yep, you love them this much: They're not trying to squeeze anyone, they're trying to maintain their costs and profit margin and due to running overtime, it costs more. Nothing is for free. Not really, once all is done you have an upgraded sim of all the aircraft that you've already flown the guts out of. The FC2.0 release is the middle ground of compatibility with their newer products while not wasting wads of time recreating the wheel. I'd hazard a guess that most people would prefer a new DCS aircraft instead of ones they've already smashed about the place for years. All your suggesting is that ED spend a whole heap of time recreating aircraft that the FC2.0 release will address to an adequate level... that is time, and a whole heap of money, for a marginal benefit. As i said in another thread, if you don't like the way things are headed then you don't actually *have* to buy this product. If it isn't what you want, then don't buy it. Sales speak louder than words. BTW, just man up and pay the 5 bucks for another copy of LOMAC through ebay... pirating it and then saying ED made you do it is just ridiculous.1 point

Common sense? Tell me Steve, since you're so new and updated on things. What common sense is there in releasing an add on pack for a 7 year old game that cannot be bought in stores or anywhere for that matter? So much common sense that the only customer base that will ever know what Flaming Cliffs even means is the current Flaming Cliffs customer base? With the tiny feature list of tweaks and patch updates, not even the Digital Combat Simulator customer base, who may have never played lomac would know what flaming cliffs is about. In fact how are you going to market what essentially is a large patch as a 29.99 product? In a sense, I feel like ED is trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of this community but I love them too much for keeping flight sim gaming alive to really get angry at that fact. I think what T-Bone means is why not cut up Flaming Cliffs or Lomac for that matter into bite sized chunks. Release them separately as DCS games, update plane models one at a time (how hard it is to create a singular Flanker model) and release it as DCS modules. For instance, lets look at this: Every 6 months, they'll take a plane from Flaming cliffs. Lets say Flanker, update the model, weapons, radar systems, etc. Maybe do a complete AFM overhaul of each plane and then release it as a 19.99 module. Go at the same rate until all Lomac games are successfully ported into DCS. At the same time, you have continuous updates across the board to create a master product. Once all is done, release a SUPER sim of all the aircraft.1 point

Time and money? Creating all new models, FM's, and cockpits for 7 planes is a huge effort. Probably not something that could be cranked out in 9 months, like FC2.0 was.1 point

ubisoft allowed ed 2 upgrades to lomac, which includes fc. fc 2.0 is just an update with only terrain and a 6dof'ish pits and a few fixes thrown in. i doubt bs and fc compatibility will ever see daylight.1 point

Would it not be possible to get a half mil flat laminated version? A non-laminated chart would be silly and easy to wear out. While you're at it you might as well get the ED/TFC/DCS branded protractors, chino graph pencils, permanent markers and 'whizz wheels'. If laminated charts are the ones produced then anyone using it may want this useful tidbit: Use a permanent marker to draw your lines and then you can remove any lines with some aftershave/cologne and a tissue. Or use your wife's perfume, whatever is cheaper. Deodorant sprays work well too. Nail varnish remover works most of the time but doesn't smell as good.1 point
