  1. Why even post then AS? Your first post didn't provide anything but trolling, or maybe trying to increase your post count? If you dont like it, at least come up with some constructive criticism... Or better yet, just dont post at all. To claim 'I was just honest' is beyond stupid...

  4. Hey Guys, Here are my pictures from the show on Saturday. The guys had to fly a rolling show due to height restrictions frm Gatwick Airport, shame to miss the heart. Apologies but my video camera decided to die during last week so I didn't get any video, and my camera is only a cheap Fujifilm Finepix A920 so not the best shots, but some have come out well. I've left all images original size in the zip file so you can zoom in if you like. I have to say I don't think it was the Reds best show. Maybe I'm picky but some of the formation positions were a little out for me. The clearest one you'll see that in is line astern. Overall though a great show and I'll post some pics and videos of the Tornado's and Typhoon tomorrow. Below is the full 10 on arrival from Cambrai at around 12.30pm coming in for landing break And here are the full pics: http://www.veao.eu/media/reds-biggin2010/Reds-Biggin2010.zip Enjoy, Ells.

  6. I've read the arguments for/against using labels - how on the one hand it's not realistic to use them but on the other neither is a 2D world with 256 colors and sh*t shooting at you through trees. I'd play "convoy hunt" and with the labels on you'd see huge splotches of blue, giving them away immediately which was boring. But if I'd play "convoy hunt" without labels they would take me out every time prior to me seeing them (usually by their escorts shooting me thru the trees). And not to mention the missions that have troops in the forest! Anyway, I didn't come up with this, I actually read it on this forum somewhere but it works so well I wanted to pass it along. I edited the labels.lua file so that ground units have a "0" at 5 km and less. Weapons have a "+" and naval units have a "^". That's all - no unit number, range and all the junk that clutters the screen. "Convoy Hunt" is now truly "cat and mouse". You only see the convoy < 5 km and even then they're just the slightest discoloration against the background. Sometimes you think you see a discoloration when it's not - so it really screws with your mind. Individual troops and units are really hard to see, so it takes alot of scanning which I think is realistic - the brief told you they'd be there but you still have to work hard to see them. Anyway, it might be old news to some but it was an easy fix that I read somewhere that changes the game fundamentally for me. Thought I'd share.

  7. I probably should have used a quote, to make it clearer that I was referring to what Subs17 had written... The part about ground talk channel, and modeling the battery usage in particular, caused me to recall the 'parable of Janes A-10' (specifically the 'feature creep'). As for the other parts of the thread, it isn't particularly difficult to understand. I will point out though that I often do not automatically accept declarations from people who are not either part of the dev team, or the testing team, when it comes to the ease of adding something to the simulation code. That is not intended as a slam, or a slight upon whatever expertise they may have... it is simply based upon: 1. The knowledge that simulator code of this order tends to be a large squirming beast, and that additions/changes often have unintended consequences. 2. Those of us on the outside are less than fully informed about what is in the simulator code. Personally, I *think* TS3 integration/support (or possibly Mumble) *probably* would be fairly easy to add, or at least provide hooks for... [and could be a very nice feature!]. However, I'm not in a position to declare that as a fact. If they can do something like that without significantly delaying the rollout, then heck yeah, go for it! If that doesn't appear (To E.D.) to be the case, then I'm content to trust their business decision(s).

  9. ^^^^ Well yeah, I attribute this video as great 'cause every video I once tried to make (and always gave up on it in the process) was worse...so let's not go there. It's a "Furball" video in documentary style, what should it look like? Transformers perhaps? Edit: I can post some great flybys I made with Windows Movie maker 5 years ago... :P

  10. Oh, Im so sorry AS, I didn't realize you were posting all this to defend the freedom of speech. That you had to post such an honorable and honest comment against a new member to the community, in order to preserve the freedom of speech and show him what the community is made of. This kind of posting and attitude from such a senior member as yourself, is sickening and your only making a fool out of yourself. There's a big difference in saying something is not good and giving advice on how to make it better compared to just throwing out harsh and trolling comments. Honesty is one thing, but at least I would like to keep the ED forums civilized. But, Im sure your way of treating new members will make the community grow and flourish....

  11. For my country, this world cup was a historical sucess and the best appearance in a big football event in my country short history. For your country, it was once of the worsts appearance, with one of the most goals recieved in one game. Who do you think got more reasons to laugh? :)

  15. Indeed. Thats one common misconceptions about Afghanistan - it is an extremely varied country regarding to geography, and even mountainous and desert areas have large amounts of vegetation.

  16. Small arms doesn't create that much of a muzzle flash, and seeing it in daylight from a moving jet would be surprisingly difficult. Not much brush and trees ins Afghanistan, try googling Helmand and the green zone, it is named so for a reason. Not saying these things to be a wisea$$ but knowing people from the danish army that serves on the ground in that area and hearing how they describe it (having had to relie on the GPS from the Leopard 2A5DK tanks to spot targets, simply because the TI is far superior to any naked eye spotting there, mainly because of high elephant grass, brushes, and wooded areas. strangely the Helmand provinse is also one of the places where there has been the most fighting. 17. No, you don't really need to consider any of that. The fact is that an A-10 pilot is very unlikely to see the infantry he's attacking. There's a bunch of descriptions of combat that show this to be true. Maybe in some rare cases they could see enemy troops, but by and large, fat chance. You're just shooting up some coordinate or a position relative to a smoke marker.
    1 point
  18. Try to play without labels but having the map markers on. Its good way to learn to find the targets by yourself but still knowing the area they're in. Thats more realistic option than the labels at least.

  19. Yes, they are. But that raises the question about how bad the others are or rather on what standards they are measured. ;) IMHO the job of the referee has become much harder. Todays games are captured by dozens of high-resolution and high-speed cameras, live-editing and blending in of offside-lines and stuff like that. But FIFA regulations still forbid the referees to judge by video-evidence! On the other hand, I have to concur with a German ex-Profi soccer-player who noted, that all this needs to be in the worldcup, because it's played by people, it's refereed by people and both make mistakes. But, he stated, that is what makes this sport so dramatic and exciting. This argument certainly has something to it as well. Why was Wembley one of the most discussed soccer games in Europe so far? Why is exactly this game so much of a myth that it helps attracting people to todays games?

  20. Name an "arcade server" please. If not "speaking with brevity" is your idea of arcade play; good luck finding a 100% clean "simulation server." Lock-on is a simulation. Maybe not as hi-fidelity as other simulators, but still a simulator. It annoys me how some people in this community condescendingly starts pulling words like air-quake and arcade out of their asses as soon as someone doesn't comply with their standards of brevity-discipline. I think GG put it very well; don't expect people to act like real pilots all the time, but kick them the hell out if they act like assholes.

The Dev's have previously mentioned that they are looking at Mumble / Murmer intergration. http://mumble.sourceforge.net/ This is good news, mumble is a great tool from the other opertunities I've had to use it (Project Reality intergration for eg) ... fingers crossed with ED's updated radio stack this could make an appearance and REALLY throw the cat amongst the pigeons

  25. AWACS Pics Here are some pics I took of the inside of an E-3 Sentry AWACS at the recent Tinker AFB airshow. I forgot to take outside pictures of it, but got detailed ones of the control stations. I was suprised that the jet was basically the same as it was back in the late 70s when they went into service. I imagine they have some modern upgraded ones but the crew claimed they knew nothing of any upgraded versions.

  26. Guys, First, I never said anything about banning. Or enforcement. You are making up your own stories at that point. So I don't know how to address those queries. RE: KA-50 takeoffs, use the server/house rules for etiquette. If apron t/o and landing is ok, then awesome. Point is to be aware. RE: Pure simulation, we're talking about behavior, not sim fidelity. And I never said I had a problem with learning curves. In fact, I believe I accounted for that with my proposed item "If I don't know, I will ask."

  27. astrospud has it right. there are more and more guys here that are just so freaking serious that is is freaking. like some sort of fanatics, not willing to listen to any suggestion, and more then happy to storm on anybody that dares to criticize or (godforbid) doubt this dogma. You cannot voice ones free opinion unless you're ready to be called sh**head. Smoky, I know how you feel, but that oath - c'mon man! thats for inter-squad rules. besides, how you're gonna enforce that? do you have some virtual police in plan? and do you think it will help this sim? to ban 90% of paying customers in the start? cos, its about how many are NOT playing up to your rules right now. and they will never learn (nor appreciate them) if you ban them. internet created greatest freedom in the world equally for all people, and you are all competing over who is going to be the biggest brother of them all? jeez! cmon people, whats with all this paranoia and police brutality? what happened to all of you? for crissake, this is a GAME, it should be fun.

Mfg toyojoe

  33. Please elaborate. How does my wanting someone to behave with some measure of etiquette in a server labeled as a simulation server mean that I am elitist? I have to admit your logic is difficult to follow. You yourself mention you are "still learning". Still learning what? Are you intending to "learn" to coexist between arcade and simulation servers, thus being the thorn on both sides? Or are you "learning" to be a better sim pilot? I suspect the latter. If that is true, then your comments are even more at-odds with your intentions. Put another way, if you are not seeking to multiplay in an environment with simulation etiquette, then what are you still learning? And there really are only two buckets..sim and arcade. We can pretend to blur the line but at the end of the day you're either flying with the mindset of simming, or arcade. You can't flop back and forth and call it something new. It's just arcade at that point. Funny that folks are getting so perturbed by this. lol Wasn't my intention. Really I just wanted to see if the majority of folks here flew with sim etiquette or if most prefer to d!ck around informally, lone-wolfing, doing taxiway takeoffs, and what not. I don't care what any specific person does, since I fly only on sim servers. I was just curious about the community. No harm intended. Allows jets to cool. :D

  34. Do KA-50's need to do rolling starts? Let's face it, they take longer to take off and land than fixed wing and can tie up an airstrip for jocks to land their crippled birds...:P Seriously, this simulation experience has a spectrum of users. I find it disheartening that some seem to want to impose a dogmatic approach to multiplayer. Sure, there should be rules, based on respect and understanding, but it's an over simplification to put players in the "Simulator MP" and "Arcade MP" baskets. There is a lot that I still need to learn, but I am not going to learn any of it on an "Arcade" server... It all sounds like hubris and elitism IMO...

  35. Hey how can I respect other pilots who have taken\respect the oath if I don't know who they are? You also Forgot * Don't kill AWACS when no one is even in the game and then boast about it. * Don't chase people back to their base and then exit the game after you run out of fuel or kill them. * Try to Balance Teams when joining a game. * Do not do suicide runs on Ka-50s and hang around the FARP till your out of fuel ( There is a special place in hell for you ). * Worst of all Don't say things like "Whatever" after being shot down anyone who says "Whatever" needs to be banned for a week.

  38. You want to use a Data Link Ingress Point or Target on the Data Link Panel not a Target Point on the PVI-800. I made this mistake too. Read the section from 11-4 in the manual onwards; but realise you want to "Designate Target and Ingress Point" (11-6), not "Designate Target Point". Then see "Automatic Ingress to Target" (11-9) Also, make sure HMS is NOT active, as this seems to confound the systen if it is (Schval cage/uncage button acts differently) Try this in Para_bellum's tutorial mission where stuff isn;t shooting at you (much): http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185/Tutorial_How_to_take_off_and_b.html#Post2626185 Good luck - I can only get it to work right 70% of the time.

  40. We are working on DCS to saturate all your beloved cores, but it's a long road to go. Right now, the main part of DCS - simulation and graphics is still single threaded. Graphics drivers became quite capable of using several cores, that's why multicore cpus does improve performance. Also, new sound engine is quite cpu-hungry (it is completely software) and runs in a separate thread (actually, 2 threads - one for rendering, another for loading). So, I'd recommend at least a dual core cpu for DCS and FC2. The new design for simulation part, capable of using many cores, is mostly done, but DCS is a very complex application and converting it to a different internal architecture is not an easy task, so, please, be patient.

  41. Also got G940,I see this too. I blaim the software entirely. The slop doesnt quite ruin the game for me because every single HOTAS I ever owned had such slop and other worse "features". But Im collecting HOTAS, got a CH, X52, the G940 and also a range of other thrustmaster offering and 2 MS sidwinders, one of them FFB wich reminds me had feedback erection problems ( :D ) so nothing new on the ffb compromose front (it always sacrifices something). May get crazy and get one of the A-10 HOTAS offering either from TM or CH (who knows both). ;)
