By using my superior code breaking skills and complex multi-million dollar software, I think I have been able to nail down a time as to when Beta 5 will be out. I have posted the analysis below. "There are a couple of major items (like TIR no longer working) that still need to be fixed before this Beta can be released, but as soon as they are fixed and internally tested, this Beta should be released shortly after. There are a couple of major items (like TIR no longer working) that still need to be fixed before this Beta can be released, but as soon as they are fixed and internally tested, this Beta should be released shortly after." As you can see, the complex algorithm has identified key letters in the quote above. The results of the 12 hour computations conclude that: Tuesday, One Feb is when it will be released.3 points

Just so you know, in most modern countries if someone creates a work they automatically have copyright over it, even if it does not have a notice. The fact they put it on the web for you to enjoy does not mean that the copyright is relinquished, it just means there is an implicit 'license' grant for you to use whatever they produced. Legally (in most countries, although the Internet fuzzes it a bit) someone who then reproduces or distributes that thing is infringing copyright ('stealing' as you put it) despite having the implicit 'license for use'. I'm not saying this to be 'heavy' nor pedantic. I hope to be informative so that you know how the international community (WTO etc) would see such similar situations, and so that you can understand the discussion with a proper mental framework (such issues are well understood and discussed to death on the InterTubes already). Since copyrights are pretty much ignored on the Web (which has both good and bad aspects) it means the only way for the creator to retain control is to restrict its spread. It is not the creator who harms the community but those who take the work without authorization. Even liberal outfits such as the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and others retain copyrights and require licensing under terms they choose. This is the only way that creative people (eg. Tyger) will remain 'incentivized' to create more good stuff for us to enjoy, which is why the principle of (limited-term) copyright is recognized universally as good (even if not always followed) and morally just. You will note that those who have taken the work in this case don't even acknowledge the creator or have the common courtesy to ask permission to distribute (which would have given Tyger a chance to find mutually satisfactory terms - since he likes people enjoying the fruits of his labor). In the Internet Age this is the direct moral equivalent of 'stealing' physical goods - no one has any right to help themselves to the copyrighted work of others (not only is it immoral, it is also illegal, not that anyone is threatening legal action - so please don't panic anyone). If you don't like Tyger's terms (use TS and fit in with others on his server) then you have perfect freedom to create a mission and publish yourself (note: reverse engineering is perfectly permissible, copying the bits directly is not). We all have large constraints on our time - but that is no excuse for those that 'steal'/infringing copyright especially in such a tiny community as ours. Tyger is a busy man- he has a family and children and a (more than) full time job as a Regimental Sergeant Major in the British Army (including recent combat in Afghanistan). He gave up his free time (it takes several dozen hours to create a great mission, then even more to test and tweak) to create and share his mission, on terms he would like to choose. Anyone else is free to also give up their limited free time and create a mission themselves. Sorry for getting on the soapbox here - but it is annoying that people think it is their 'right' to make demands about the labor (missions, mods) and resources (servers) of others. Sure, state you would like more open servers - but that is different from essentially demanding that control of a resource ought to essentially serve the 'will of the community' rather than the creator/owner. Community created resources are a privilege the creators grant you, since they wish you to also have fun, but it is no 'right' of users. Once you create your own missions (if you stop making excuses and give up your own time, if sounds like you are very able) then you will have the 'right' (copyright) and be able to extend the privileges to others as you see fit.2 points

I close my servers usually because we have more than enough fliers from our own squad. Dont need people who are not on our TS, who have no clue and pollute the sim with countless chat messages, interfere with taxi ops etc.2 points

I have to agree, putting it out unfinished may give the general public a bad taste and could possibly hurt ED in the long run. I mean even here with the sticky's and stuff about it being a beta when you pre-purchased the game, some folks got pissed because it would not work. I love the fact we get to in some small way help a product mature, but that is just me. I really balk to think how these forums would blow up by some , how do I say, less then knowledgeable folks not understanding what they bought. As always my 2 cents. Bullet2 points

Just to put my 2 cents in.. Squad servers are PW protected because you want to keep your well-prepped and briefed missions from going south. Most of the squads are serious groups who want to fly in a somewhat realistic environment, this will not work if you have guys popping in and out at will and not being on comms. Not saying this goes for every pilot but the simple fact is that you have no control over who enters and when someone decides to go renegade. Compare it to a game of soccer, how would you feel if you were playing a match and all of the sudden a supporter runs into the field and starts kicking the ball off field, starts insulting your team members, then disables two of them by brutally tackling them and leaving them helplessly injured and then running off again because he decided he didnt like the match that much anyways or he had only 5 minutes to play :D On the other hand, I dont think there are many squads that would deny you an opportunity to fly around with them and see what is going on if you say hello on their forums and state your intentions. Personally I cannot really enjoy flying on public servers mostly because of lacking comms but it depends very much on mission design. I do agree that it might seem daunting to make the step to join a squad because you may think you are a casual player but it is only a matter then of finding the right squad for you. Mature squads (like mine :)) understand that people have lives. Wives, kids, jobs, other hobbies, you name it. The advantage of a squad if you are casual pilot or just have a busy life and do not fly long periods of time is that you can actually plan flights in your schedule. You can agree with another pilot lets fly Monday at 1900 for 1 hour, you can agree on what you will do in that hour and then do it. If you happen to have some extra time you can just hop on TS and see who is there. IMO that is much more efficient then browsing the online servers to try and find a good one and continuously getting frustrated because there are no servers up to your liking or there is a lack of public servers in general. If you like flightsimming and you have experienced your first multiplayer flight with good comms you will never want go back. As far as missions go.. If you put them up on the forum, how can you be upset about someone hosting it? I saw my missions hosted a couple of times on servers and it actually made me feel good instead of bad because I put the mission up for people to have fun with it in the first place. So seeing them hosted confirms I must have at least somewhat achieved that objective. Can imagine you'd like some credit for your work, as said put your name and adress in the briefing and hope for some valentine cards in three weeks :thumbup:2 points

Generally I think its a problem when you jump online and at least 70% of the servers are locked. The lack of Servman could be a factor for why we don't see more open servers. The scale and scope of DCS also plays against a traditional game-server. There is no need to run a DCS server with 40 slots, unlike LockOn. Even with 16 slots, 8 for A-10C, 8 for Ka-50, that would be WAY overkill. DCS thrives with a low number of players working together to accomplish the task. Thus we have an atmosphere where known groups tend to have closed missions and the overall capability of a "pickup game" or matchmaking simply do not exist. Unfortunately this bodes badly for individual players who need a group to play with. I hope when Servman is adapted to DCS:WH a few open servers will pop up. As for the rights of mission designers. Eh, whatever. I stopped believing that the mission was the major reason a player joined one server over the other. Hell, I was halfway tempted to run all of the big servers "exclusive" missions on our server just to see how the admins and the player base would react. And you know what, once you put a mission out there for the public to use regardless if you want them to only play in a specific server or not, there is pride in knowing that someone else enjoys your work. When they take it down because it is buggy, just blame it on the game or your personal need to make the mission more complex than it needed to be -_-2 points

Not to butt in here, but I think you're right (sorry misunderstood what you wrote the first time and edited). I'm not a lawyer (or your lawyer), obviously, but as far as US Copyright law is concerned a derivative work is something that is derived from the original work in the sense that it includes major elements of said work. Writing a program from scratch that utilizes original source code that happens to interface with an API offered to third parties is not a derivative work. If Eagle Dynamics provided you with a scripting language that was their IP, and you made something with it just for lock-on, it might be a different situation. For instance, if you reverse-engineered someone's software or took their source code, and then made your own version of the program, that would be a derivative work and would quite possibly violate your original EULA depending on what EULA it was. Now, with the above in mind, look at a program such as TacView, which utilizes an open scripting language (Lua), which interfaces with several different games, and just happens to also interface with ED's product. Would they suddenly now "own" TacView? Under the logic that any third party content is a derivative work, anyone who writes software which interfaces with any of Microsoft's proprietary APIs (DirectX, Win32, .NET, etc) would be Microsoft's IP. That's quite clearly false; while the APIs are Microsoft's property, the 3rd party content's copyright rests with its respective creators. I have read the license agreement that comes with the product. There is a difference between creating content on your own and creating content using the proprietary utilities provided by the game's creators. If I make a skin, for instance, in photoshop and happen to use that skin in the game, does my photoshop image--which I created--suddenly become some third party's property? I think not. However, if you use ED/TFC's mission editor to make a mission, that's a different story--and of course the EULA contains provisions for use of the mission editor and distribution of content created with such. There's certainly a lot of confusion going on here regarding EULAs. You should check out the ArmA community if you think that this is the only community where petty flamewars break out over who created what, despite the fact that all mission content is strictly NFR. It gets seriously ridiculous at times. The type of thing has been going on since well before people were making custom .wads for Doom.1 point

Here's a couple different ways to do it. With TAD: By using whatever zoom level in the map you are comfortable with (ie. default, EXP or EXP2), guesstimate the location of your target from visual to the map, place cursor over that place and create a markpoint. Set CDU to MARK and slave the TGP to that markpoint. With TGP/Maverick: Bring up your TGP or Maverick, ensure they are SOI and select boresight. Check boresight on HUD. Point TGP/Maverick symbol at target by maneuvering the place. For TGP: Once the diamond is over the target, move the tgp slightly and it will begin inertial tracking. Resume normal flight, make a markpoint if you want. Reset your flight to an initial point and attack. For Maverick: Same as with tgp intially, but instead of moving it, just hit TMS aft short to ground stabilize and immediately create a markpoint with it - or adjust the sight onto target and attack right away if you prefer. In any case, don't forget to offset/reset your flight to the desired altitude and IP before you commence attacking. Don't press you attack if you don't have to at first. Finally, if you go to GUN mode on the HUD, the gun pipper should occlude any symbology under it.1 point

I think that everyone can agree, that if you want a solid mission released with a stable bug free gold version of the game, that is clearly your right to do so. If you want a closed server, I think that is the best way to do it as said, as well as your right. Open servers lack the comms usually and are not cohesive, with a plan. Totally agreed. But your primary reason for not sharing a mission was none of those reasons, it was plagiarism. You were worried someone would learn a trick and use that trick in their mission to make something cool, taking away from your awesomeness and your, "I'm more serious and better than the rest of you" ego status. In the end if you keep excellent missions "close to the chest" for just your personal wing, whether you think you are growing the community or not, the reality is you aren't in the big scheme of the DCS community. Those like MadTommy, Grimes, Greb, and COUGAR are giving the community some great missions and I look forward to everything they have to come. As stated, some people enjoy this simulation when opportunity affords. Currently, with a family, schooling, and a job it is impossible for me to create my own content so in order to pass my dollars to DCS I need a healthy, helpful, vibrant community to make this more than just a short term few mission training module. I've delved into the editor a bit, and have made some for other games such as Arma. I understand what it takes and appreciate every effort. In the end, your content truly belongs to DCS in my eyes. In fact, most games with modable content have a license agreement that says just that, that your creation belongs to them. It's their software that is allowing you to create missions and content. If you want to be a hard nose and pretend you don't share creation because somehow the community is damaging you in some way, that's your issue. It just really doesn't lend to making your "wing" look all that great in the eyes of probably 95% of the users on here. It reeks of elitism and sense of superiority. But then as you said, it's your right to do so. I am sure that I and many others can live without that content anyways, and I'm not begging for you to change your position, I'm just voicing my opinion on the open forum as is my right to do.1 point

Test setup: 580's SLI lightly OC'd 800/1600 running driver 263.09. 6970's CF lightly OC'd 950/1420 running driver 10.12a. All Benchmarks are bezel corrected (besides 5760x1200) and have 2x AA. ZR30w's have their plastic bezels removed and monitors clamped together to get the smallest vertical gap between screens. i7 920 D0 @ 4.55 GHz 6GB DDR3 Intel SSD Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound 3x 30" HP ZR30w's in Portrait I don't have any fancy graphics for the benchmark numbers, so a spreadsheet view will have to do. Going from left to right, the numbers would mean average / min / max. ^ = nVidia DX9 AFR portrait FPS limit bug of 39/40. More on that later. All in game settings are maxed unless otherwise stated. AF16x is forced in both drivers as well as disabling "optimization" driver settings which only gain you 1-2% performance anyways. Sorry 5760x1200 users, the 580 benchmarks went flawlessly as you can natively select that resolution in Surround but AMD wouldn't let me set that no matter what I did. Only Heaven 2.1 custom resolution worked. Manually editing the other games files didn't work and gave D3D errors etc. I tried registry edits to get 1920x1200, but that wouldn't work in Eyefinity. The last resort was going to edit EDID files but that's a bit involved and not worth it for a resolution I will never use. Blame AMD's wonderful driver team for not allowing a basic 1920x1200 16:10 resolution on a 16:10 30", wtf? * = 580 memory limit reached as viewed per MSI Afterburner. The breakdown: Heaven 2.1 DX 11 - 6970 CF comes out above the 580's here. The 580's run into memory problems. But even at the lower resolution where memory isn't as big of an issue, the 6970's still win out. Crossfire scaling is around 85%. Resident Evil 5 - 6970's win by a fair margin. Eve Online - Even though SLI does work in Windowed mode, I pulled in a lower number with the 580's than I did with the 6970's in which Windowed mode only works single card. Win 6970. DCS:A10C Beta / Medium in game settings - Mixed results here, the 580's ran into serious memory issues. Aliens vs. Predators DX11 benchmark - Clear winner for the 580's. Hawx 2 benchmark - In landscape you can see the 580's trump the 6970's. The 6970's win in portrait mode because of the DX9 AFR portrait bug on the 580's. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - One of my favorite games. The 580's win here but just slightly. You can see 95+% crossfire scaling. World of Warcraft DX 11 mode - Clear winner in the 6970's. Rise of Flight - Favor to the 6970's. Left 4 Dead 2 - 6970's win. Batman - Guess what 580's? DX9 AFR bug, yet again. The 6970's do well with virtually 100% crossfire scaling, yet if the 580's portrait bug wasn't there I believe it would have won out in portrait mode just like it did in landscape. Metro 2033 - The 580's just edge out the 6970's here in portrait mode. MS: FSX DX10 - Crossfire didn't seem to be kicking in here much for some reason, giving the nod to the 580's. Lost Planet 2 - Favor: 580's. There's no way around the nVidia Surround DX9 AFR portrait mode FPS limit bug that I could find. You also cannot enable triple buffering via D3DOverider in AFR, only SFR mode. That poses a problem because in order to eliminate screen tearing, you need VSync. In order to get VSync without tremendous input lag you need triple buffering. You see where that is going. Without Vsync on, both the nVidia and AMD camps both get horrible screen tearing. This occurs no matter the FPS. Above 60, below 60, it doesn't matter. Some games automatically enforce triple buffering to limit the input lag, but for the ones that don't you need D3DOverider/ATI Tray Tools etc. Ease of setup - The 580's were much less painful to setup and get running in SLI. Run 3x DVI-D cables. The displays just "work" like they are suppose to with DVI-D, even with the 3x 25 foot cables I use to get the signals from one room, through the wall into the computer area. Not having to deal with the sound and heat of a computer in your immediate area is so sweet. ;) Install the drivers, setup the Surround resolution, bam your done. The 580's also over clock real easy in SLI and didn't produce many problems. AMD has a bad driver stigma because their drivers, well suck! Recap: 580's would be much more competitive in DX9 portrait games if nVidia would sort their drivers and fix the FPS limit bug. Too bad most games are still DX9 as the bug doesn't exist when using DX10/11 as you can see in BF:BC2 numbers. If nVidia doesn't fix their drivers, as more games leave DX9 behind this will become less important. 580's 1.5GB memory limits its performance at such a high resolution. At 5760x1200 and below it isn't as much of a factor. SLI works in windowed mode, CF does not. SLI works in virtually every game, CF does not in a select few. 2GB VRAM means 6970's can run the 3x 30" resolutions at 4x AA +. Crossfire scaling is quite good. 90-100% gains normal by adding a second card. Display port sucks. :) Noise levels and heat output are similar for both setups. At 100% GPU load in my super air cooled case the GPU temps average 65-70 deg C max for both setups. The 6970's are noticeably louder and I confirmed this with using a dB meter. In order to save a nickel, AMD decided to make one of the DVI ports single link only! Vsync on 580's Surround is perfect using 3x DVI-D cables. Vsync on with 6970's present a large problem in Eyefinity as you are mixing Display port/DVI-D signals and a single permanent obvious screen tear will always be present. The only way around this is to wait for "Eyefinity 6" edition 6970's or get the 3-DP 6990 when they are released. Major pitfalls with 580's 3x 30" Surround: 1.5GB VRAM, DX9 Portrait AFR FPS limit. Major pitfalls with 6970's 3x 30" Eyefinity: Display port, mixed display connectivity screen tear, AMD drivers. I have been thinking of whether or not trying out the 6990 cards in CF for four GPU's if they launch with 4 GB (2GB frame buffers). This does pose some problems. Quad CF is notorious for having issues and increasing input lag because of all of the buffer flipping. Single GPU games like Rise of Flight and Eve windowed performance would actually decrease as you would only be using one of the four GPU's which would be at a lower clock. Some games like DCS-A10C I'd run into CPU limiting way before 4 GPU's are pushed to max. Besides Batman, with the 6970 CF setup I can run minimum 60 FPS already with some room to breathe and lock the FPS there. I don't even think a GTX 595 would compete unless they came out with 6GB cards. Yes, 6GB would be needed (3GB frame buffer) per card or it would just crash like the 580's when it runs out of VRAM. If anyone has any good ideas on how to get the "custom" 5760x1200 resolution to work with the 6970's, I am all ears and would finish the benchmarks for that resolution. I will try and update these benchmarks when new drivers are released by both sides. Please let me know if you have any questions.1 point

I also see no sense in open servers, as the kind of flying this sim deserves, is not possible by just jumping into a running mission. There needs to be a briefing, so that everybody knows the master-plan and his role within. Limitations, Procedures, Comms, ... There is so much that makes open servers kind of useless... I could imagine missions, that are announced on public forums (including a briefing), where people can sign a slot to take part (like a LOCERF for example). This way squadless pilots could take part in a complex MP-mission. But this will have to wait until the software is "final". However, still then, too low skills of one could ruin the mission for all. And that is why I'll keep flying with my squadmates only, and maybe with guys from squads I know for flying on a similar level of realism.1 point

Get a grip of yaself and stop whining. My server is closed because i am testing and testing to ensure I release something stable. Incase you have forgotten, guess what? we are in Beta! Every Beta version i have had to re-evaluate the mission concept or something in the mission design to make it compatible for 'now' - ie the current beta build. When i did open the server to the public, it was then, now listen carefully, 're-served' by two other 'private servers'. the mission itself was essentially in Beta by virtue of the fact that A-10C is beta. I asked the fixed slots (6 only) not to re-serve. I asked them this when they cam on the server. I havn't got a problem with reverse engineering, hell crack on! we've all done it for the good and benefit of learning more with regards to the ME and the condition and action sets. I'm in complete agreement with Moa. It is my right to decide whether i serve closed or open. If you don't like it or think it's bad for the community, i couldn't really give a damn. Tyger is right. He made the mission and it is his right to do with it what he wants, including locking it (he doesn't need a good reason to do so, but he does have good reasons, some of which he took the time to explain). If you don't like it then I suggest you create your own mission and test it until it is of multi-player quality. Then you are free to share your talents with the community. Far too often people on these forums act as if they have some kind of right to the hard work of others (ED or modders) and have the right to complain loudly about the decisions made by the creators - despite the fact that they themselves have never contributed anything of such significance (and therefore do not appreciate the colossal amount of work such things take to create, test, and make easier for others to share). Commenting and criticism is fine, and even serves a necessary function, on the understanding that the creators *owe you nothing*. No matter if you disagree with the creators they are contributing to the community far more than those who contribute (and it is a contribution, albeit small) nothing other than criticsm. While creators (myself included) would very much like you to enjoy our work, and appreciate the feedback you give please don't mistake that anyone other than the creators has the right to dictate on how we decided to share our software (my personal preference to be more open, but others are perfectly within their rights to be more closed when sharing their stuff, or on whatever other terms they choose). Yes, please state your wish that there be more un-passworded servers that are out there, but you must also respect the rights of the server owners that provide them (and they do cost money and effort to run and maintain) out of the goodness of their hearts. If you don't like closed mods then create ones yourself and share them (this is what I do, I have licensed the source of my lottu utility under GNU GPL v3, and will soon share my statistics source code). If you don't like passworded servers then please create one and manage it yourself (as I do with the VNAO 'stallturn' server). It is this that will grow the community (which you profess to want, as do I).1 point

Henchman as I've said before, it'd be fantastic to play this game in a world with the graphics of Crysis BUT...We have 2 options...ED can spend their resources making a beautiful graphics engine which nobody can run, and which the military don't care about (meaning we'd probably never get the sim at all), or we can have a brilliant sim with lesser graphics... Look how long it's taken Beta 5 to get sorted...They're adjusting things like velocities of missiles through the air and extremely complex systems through a multiple layered sim..Their target market (i.e most of us here) simply don't care about how good the graphics are. Yes it's great we have HDR now, sometimes flying through the clouds is really quite beautiful, however I'd take well represented and realistic systems and avionics over Crysis style graphics. I also think that statement probably represents most people heres views - Look at the community playing IL-2 still (hell, even Falcon 4.0!), versus the community behind Crysis..The communities speak for themselves, and graphics definitely didn't win that battle! The fact is, Crysis will disappear as soon as a new graphics engine surpasses it...DCS-A10 will be around considerably longer. If we wanted graphics over realism we'd all be playing Wings of Prey. I am not willing to accept second rate systems so I can have shiny graphics. Neither are most of us here!1 point

Только меня заколебали частые вылеты из игры в онлайне? По сравнении с ЛО1 очень нестабильно в онлайне ведет себя игра. есть лекарство?1 point

Hi there, first let me introduce myself: i'm playing BS since release but never gone for a serious virtual career like in a squad or so. Just having fun and modding. I really love the atmosphere in BS with my hands and feet on the G940, giving additional commands by touchpal and kpow's profile while having a glance over all by freetrack. Startup procedure: I don't know if there is any relation to it, but let my tell about. The procedure starts with connecting the WiiRemote by BT, starting Freetrack and checking functionality. Then connecting the G940, opening the profiler and checking functionality also. At last starting and checking touchpal. If everything is fine, like it is normally, i go on with starting BS, choosing a mission and go on for a flight. So far so good. Problem: While playing, for short or long, the G940 will quit working in BS with a reliability of 100%. The throttle lights are still on and the FFB-pressure on the stick feels the same like last but BS doesn't recieve any more commands of the hotas, nether of the axis set in BS nor the buttons set in profiler. When pausing the game and switching back on desktop the profiler is still working and shows all functions of the system working accuratly. The only thing helping out for the moment is shutting down the profiler, starting it once again (restarting not just reopening from the taskbar) and switching back to BS. After that everything works fine for some minutes, just until the command line gets broken again. That can happen after some minutes, second or just not. The real annoying factor is when restarting the profiler and in the same moment freetrack quits communication with the WiiRemote. Any idea?1 point

Wouldn't it be cool if something like this could be incorperated into DCS? http://sites.google.com/site/samsimulator1972/home1 point
