  1. This is precisely what I do, especially because of this term: (https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/faq/bonus_rules/)
  2. ED can keep all of their flyables. As long as I get my map SDK to play with I will be happy.
  3. DCS Kickstarters have been such a mess. I doubt ED would even try one anyway. This will only hurt third party developers.
  4. A photo to help people make their decision:
  5. This mission is pretty fun if you just want to drive a vehicle and ignore the commander aspect. Check it out: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=116463 (also, for those who may have missed it, ED confirmed working on a DCS level armored vehicle)
  6. I only bought the A-10C beta because I wanted to fly the Ka-50 around Las Vegas. NTTR is looking a lot nicer than it did back in beta, and now I have a Huey with civilian skins. I think the wait will be worth it.
  7. I don't support games or developers that give priority to their console versions.
  8. You could also throw a saddle on it and have mounted infantry shooting from mechback.
  9. I think the first practical mechs will be much smaller and lighter than the typical sci-fi behemoths, and they will most likely support infantry. Some of the previous users had jokingly said mechs would be used as a target, but that could seriously be part of their role on the battlefield, especially if they are unmanned. A robot isn't innately concerned about self preservation, so it can be used to draw enemy fire while providing covering fire for human troops. Mechs could also be used for mine sweeping, bomb disposal, around hazardous materials, and for lifting heavy objects. I imagine they would be more of a utility vehicle/robot than a tank, and they may be "optionally piloted" too.
  10. One company having too much control over a market is never a good thing. How many more solid decisions until I can say "I told you so"?
  11. My work here is done.
  12. I watch it for amusement more than serious news, but I think I visit OfficialNerdCubed more than any other game news sites. He has done a DCS video too: (There is also an official website) http://www.nerdcubed.co.uk/
  13. The reason I don't like all of my accounts merged is because I don't want everyone I know and all of their friends knowing everything I do every time I do anything. Having a single account for everything makes it more difficult to manage privacy, and makes it much worse if someone gets your password.
  14. I assumed we were using the Greek alphabet. Gamma testing should be next!
  15. Yes, as long as it does not require me to install my modules twice to use them in both World and Vietnam.
  16. How could I vote yes when there still isn't a C-47 announced? A timeless classic.
  17. You could turn a model rocket into crude IR missile with an arduino, some infrared photodiodes, and some steerable fins. All you have to do is write the tracking algorithm and rig it up. That should be doable with a $200 budget. (The price will scale with the size of the rocket if you want more range)
  18. If you forget to set the airplane as the player airplane, switch to it and press alt+j. That should put you in control.
  19. If you look in the beginners guide, it says DCS supports .bmp, .tga, and .dds files, but I have been using .png and it works just fine. .png will do lossless compression more efficiently than .tga, so it is a better choice for saving hard drive space.
  20. I have been simming for 20 years now. I think a better question is why I am still here. The simple answer is that if I left, there would be a void in my heart that nothing else could fill. It is much more cost effective and convenient than the real thing, and the ever improving quality of sims has kept me around. I think all humans have an innate desire to experience flight, and this is the most practical way to do it, well to simulate it. I realize it has nothing on the real thing, but I don't get vertigo in my desk chair.
  21. I don't think I can actually comment on this topic in a way that would not be considered political. (aside from a metacomment like this)
  22. If I had to choose between a random person and a sim pilot, I would pick the sim pilot. In FSX, I let one of my (completely not plane savy) friends try to land an ultralight on a 4 km runway in good weather... he was not able to do it. But then you get stories like this: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-humber-24450534 Whatever that guy's chances were, an experienced simmer would have better.
  23. The CPU still has to do a big chunk of passing data to the GPU. I know these days there have been efforts to put more of the load on the GPU, but it can't do everything by itself.
  24. DCS does not currently simulate the sea floor, so it is equally possible to land any distance off shore. It does simulate stream beds (at least for ground vehicles, but that may be built into the ground vehicle model).
