  1. TV's are great for consol gaming and that is about it. As mentioned earlier response times on TV's suck. If they were so great then we all would have gone out and bought a 40 to 50" TV to flight sim on.
  2. Just to clarify I was talking about price sweet spot, not performance. Above 3200 speeds and the price starts to jump significantly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Congrats mate on your build. Well balanced and powerful system. I would stick with the 1070 for a while. For 1440p gaming I'm not really sure if you need a 1080Ti. And as Bit said I would manually change the voltage. The auto overclock features by motherboard vendors tend to err on the side of overkill when it comes to voltage. Reducing the voltage while still ensuring stability will reduce your temps a bit.
  4. Forget X299 and for that matter AMD X399 and Threadripper if all you are doing is gaming.
  5. I have always overclocked my rigs and for that reason I have felt more comfortable with only populating 2 dims slots or in the case of my ageing X58 system, three slots instead of six. And with this in mind I would target a 32GB 2 stick kit. As far as RAM speed go with the fastest you can afford with 3200 being the current sweet spot.
  6. Nice stuff. Who in their right mind would spend similar money on a i5-7600k unless all they are going to play for the next 3-5 years is old single threaded poorly optimized games.
  7. Awesome stuff Pilotasso. Turn off those lights in the room. PC should provide adequate lighting.
  8. 100% agree. Either get R5 1600 series or wait another few months for arrival of Coffee Lake 6 core with Z370 board. The 7740X is a joke.
  9. With that kind of drop in temp the cooler must not have been seated very well at all. Looks good now though.
  10. Have we actually had any direct real world DCS comparisons of an Intel v Ryzen CPU with same GPU? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. One of the best things about the English summer is visiting Duxford.
  12. For me IPS is a must. Photography RAW editing work I need the benefit of an IPS panel. Plus I don't play fast stitch style shooters. Flight sims and strategy games so My next monitor will be another IPS panel but with GSync, 34-35" ultra wide 3440 x 1440 resolution with 100-120hz refresh. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I love when people lay out their hardware before a build. Really solid choices there David OC. I was looking also to the Max IX Hero board. Perhaps not the best of value but I like the aesthetics and features. Only irritant is no wifi despite a mini port and cutouts on the IO shield for it.
  14. That has become my view. I game at 1440p which really does l vel out he CPU playing field and as you said DCS relies more on a good GPU rather than just heavily on the CPU. I would rather have 6-8 cores to get me through the next 5 years rather than being stuck with the big standard 4 cores that Intel have shoved down our throats for the last decade. And the sexy temptation of a 5Ghz CPU clock speed just ain't all that anymore. In any case at least there is a real choice now instead of the boring get a i5 or i7 K CPU. 15. That's promising to hear Pilotasso regarding the RAM speed improvements. I bought a 2x16GB 3200 Corsair Vengeance kit a few months ago with view to building a new system. I had heard RAM prices were going to climb so committed early to the purchase. Then with all the memory problems surrounding Ryzen I had been hesitant to commit to a Ryzen based rig. Looking good now though by the looks of it for AMD and early adopters. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Have you not considered a AMD Ryzen based system such as a R5 1600. You could build a system around this with considerably cheaper CPU/motherboard combo than a Z270 Intel i5-7600k based one. The extra cash saved you could then put towards a more powerful GPU such as a GTX1070 8GB card. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Nice specs though as someone else mentioned 64GB of RAM isn't going to yield any benefit in games compared to 32GB. Also as you already have a GTX1070 I would suggest jumping up to the 1070Ti instead of the 1080. In any case your specs are stonkingly good and should yield great in game performance. 18. I would hold off if you can for a few months. Intel are releasing there high end X299 very soon and then followed later in the year by Coffee Lake for the mainstream. But there are things you can do now with your existing system to squeeze out some better performance while you wait: 1. If you have a decent CPU cooler I would have a go at overclocking that i7-920 up to 3.8Ghz - 4Ghz. 2. Buy an SSD to put your OS and main apps/games on. 3. Get the best GPU you can afford. GTX1070 offers great bang for buck and is perfect for up to 1440p gaming. Then in the coming months once you have made your decision on motherboard, memory and processor you can move across the SSD and GPU into your new rig.
  19. Personally 1440p with a 27" or 34" ultrawide is the sweet spot for me. I've owned this Dell 27" 2560 x 1440 for a good 5 years now. I just want to move up to a GSync featured panel.
  20. If using 1080p monitor then GTX1060 should be fine. I would grab a i5-7600K instead of the older i5-6600k as overclocks higher. I would however strongly consider a Ryzen 5 and B350 motherboard based system if you want to save some cash which you could then perhaps look at upgrading the 1060 for a 1070 card.
  21. I was wondering when Asus would release a cheaper slightly less featured Strix variant. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. If you are looking at an Intel K series CPU then I would target a Z270 motherboard instead of a H270. Also make sure that your 16GB of RAM is a two stick kit so you have room to double the memory down the track. I'm with Bit that 32GB is preferable if you can afford it. Though with RAM prices right now being as high as they are I think 16GB is a good middle ground.
  23. Six months ago I was considering an i5-7600k and nice Z270 m/b and overclock the CPU to 4.6 Ghz. Now it is difficult if impossible to justify this with the emergence of the Ryzen 5 series. Here in Australia I can grab a Ryzen 5 1600 and a top line m/b like the Asus VI Crosshair for AUD $668. While an Intel i5 7600k and Asus Maximus IX Hero would set me back AUD $734. That's an additional AUD $66 for a lesser 4 core/4 thread system vs AMD's 6 core/12 thread alternative. If I coughed up the extra $66 for the 4 core/4 thread Intel rig, I can see myself in a year or two winging about not having enough cores and threads and how new games run like crap on my rig compared to others with more cores/threads on their CPU. The only justification I can find for the i5-7600k is if you only play old single threaded games and nothing else along with using little to no productivity software. So yeah, right now it's AMD for me unless Eagle Dynamics take another 6 months to release finally a merged and improved DCS platform by which time Intel should have a response with mainstream Coffee Lake i5's and i7's.
  24. Kaby Lake X seems a waste. Even for enthusiasts cheaper R7 8core platform is far more appealing. Coffe lake may be a more appealing mainstream alternative however who knows if this will come out in the next few months or at end of 2017. More and more I am leaning towards an R5 6 core/12 thread based rig. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. Link: 7700k vs. 1700x ( AMD wins almost any gametest now, WOW ) It's all good news for pc users. Intel is rumoured to be "rushing" out the door coffee lake with a i5 using 6 real cores and guessing i7 version with 6 real and 12 threads. It used to be so easy the last 6-7 years regarding CPU decisions but now not so. Guessing these coffee lake will come with another 5-10% IPC gain. Looks like Intel chose not to cut prices but rather get Coffee Lake out at least 6 months earlier than originally planned. I guess cutting prices for them kind of cheapens their premium branding.
