  1. I'm not the biggest fan of missions that start in air but I have noticed that it seems to help initial stability to exit and restart almost immediately. Got in the habit of placing collective about half power to begin then immediately lowering and then pulling back up after mission starts. Would still rather start on ground at idle.
  2. I inadvertently set my main characters logbook to "Invulnerable - NO". Now I can no longer select him cause he's dead many times over. Where and how can I go to re-set this back. There must be an editable file somewhere I hope ? ? ?
  3. I forgot earlier to remind people that "Clearing a Category" will only wipe out any joystick assignments and not touch the keyboard bindings. But the upside is that you will now be able to assign joystick buttons to all the lines in the category including the ones you were locked out of.
  4. I've been waiting and wondering about this too. Remapping entire catagories seems a bit much to have to do for some catagories at least. Not so bad in those with few joystick assignments.
  5. Great photos Skull. Interesting to study the breaks. Main cabin looks pretty intact and survivable with a bit of luck for the crew.
  6. Right, starting at 2-46 gives a good general description of the AP system and channels then 4-19 and on goes into specific situations and usage. Nice to be able to refer to a real flight manual to fly this thing. They make a good point about being ready to disengage the system as I have had it go bonkers a couple times myself. Now have a stick button keyed to shut off the whole AP instantly.
  7. One easy hover trick is to tell yourself to "Pull Up On The White Line" For example if you see a lower white line, lift the tail...... etc Edit: The 3 docs in the link above are all excellent Also the Mi-17 manual inc in the Mi-8 docs folder has lots of good info on this and other systems in the Mi-8
  8. There is a great Mi-8 English cockpit mod available now from Devrim. Check the forum. Installs easily and looks great. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=114166
  9. You can't lock the front wheel but setting the main wheel brake will reduce the movement of the nose quite a lot while you're getting ready to lift off. At least you won't be turning in a circle. I find the Mi-8 moves very little on the ramp with the brake set I find that when you release the brake I usually get a little nose movement to the right - apply pressure to the left pedal. Then as you increase collective the nose will start to move to the left - apply pressure to the right pedal as required. Normal for any helicopter with a single main rotor and a tail rotor. Of course the Huey pulls right and the Mi-8 pulls left as you apply power.
  10. Make sure your front wheel brake is locked when you start up. Before you try to lift off, make sure to set the Pitch/Roll channel and the Yaw channel to On and it will help a lot to keep your nose straight when you lift off. After you gain some altitude and build up some forward speed you can disable the Yaw channel if you wish. Performing basic flight maneuvers with the Yaw channel on and off requires different techniques which take some time and practice to become comfortable with. At different times you will likely want the channel on or off. And of course you will want to make friends with the Trim function. All three helicopters have noticeably different "Trim" functions that also take some time and practice to get comfy with... Edit: I misspoke above. You will be locking the main wheel brakes but this will reduce the potential side movement of the nose quite a lot
  11. Good thought Gunfighter, we never asked if he had power....... The switch in Mainstays photo worked instantly to clear all my pylons. Make sure you are using the right hand switch under the safety cover. Lift cover - hit switch.
  12. Worked fine for me. Master Arm switch was Armed (P), but Weapons were Safe (Alt-S)
  13. An excellent English mod is available now... Check it out. Easy install http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=114166
  14. Hi again wolle, The Mi-17 manual in the docs folder also has a detailed section on the radios, comm, adf, etc that are shown in the beta model but not active yet. I'm assuming that Belsimtek will be making them to function as described in the docs
  15. Yes.... like Lizzard said is very important to do
  16. Yeah.... a lot of people have gotten into trouble forgetting that the 5 on the vsi isn't 500 fpm
  17. Keep in mind that once you know where they are, the hidden switches can be operated from the front of the sight with your mouse
  18. Yeah they did a great job on the animated crew in the Huey I think. Mi-8 cockpit feels very lonely
  19. Another Mi please......
  20. Hi wolle, The Mi-17 manual included in the docs has a lot of very good info that can be applied to the current release until a full DCS manual is released after further refinement to the beta. It even has a very clear explanation of the use of the auto-pilot system starting on page 2-46 ......
  21. Wow ! Great documentary. Very impressive aircraft for sure if you weren't already convinced. Edit: Just finished watching the second part which focused primarily on the Mi-8 in combat. Amazing machine. I want the rear ramp, wide side cargo door, "door" gunners, anti tank missiles.......... And would also be great to see both the Mi-8 and Huey capable of offloading troops from a hover without landing in rough terrain.... well we can wish can't we ?
  22. Yes and look at the poor sob in the KA-50. I know that there is a lot of computer assistance available but still you have one person dealing with flying, navigation, engine management, weapons system and targeting, threat assessment and response...... Stress level has to be high at best
  23. Because it's not as twitchy as an attack helicopter on the move I think the sensation is of being in a slower bird then it actually is. And this is a big heavy beast compared to the Huey. Pretty peppy for it's size I think.

  25. Makes me wonder if we will have a "slick" variation in our MI-8
