The radio works mostly by using presets, but you can manually set the radio frequency from the front panel after you press "-" button on the main radio control panel.

LAlt + Y changes the coordinate system of the F10 map in game.

Viggen was designed, as per Swedish doctrine, to operate from prepared road bases. We don't have exactly those in DCS yet, but that doesn't stop people from using ingame highways as such.

I guess you can guesstimate it by using F10 map, since it tells the cursor position's altitude above the sea level. Since the air pressure at sea level is 1013 millibars and the pressure decreases about 1 millibar per 10 meters, then you can calculate the appropriate altimeter setting from that.

New vid card with older rig? Anyone?
Retu81 replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I upgraded my system recently from an ancient one to a little more modern. At one point I had GTX 1060 installed with an old AMD Phenom II 965. You could clearly see that the old CPU was holding the GPU back. The performance wasn't any better than it had been with my previous GTX 750Ti and in some cases it was even worse. :D So I don't really recommend mixing old CPU and new video card together. -
Tail boom strike perhaps? Sudden movement of the stick leading to the rotor blade hitting the tail, for example.
-
Yep, I swapped my MB and CPU and forgot to deactivate modules beforehand. Lost an activation from each because of that. Not a big deal, since you get a new one once per month if you run out. It still caused a bit of a hassle as you had to type in the serial numbers again.

Should be. The engine has its own mechanically driven fuel pump that sucks fuel from the feed tank. The rest of the pumps are electrically driven booster pumps that transport fuel from different tanks to the feed tank.

The limitations in the handbook may not always be due to structural strength. Sometimes the hydraulic system isn't just powerful enough to extend the gear to downlock. Or the drag produced by the gear at high speed could overwhelm the control surfaces leading to loss of control.

I don't have Spitfire, but one thing I really had trouble in 109 was the gyroscopic force produced by the engine or trying to lift the plane off the runway too early. Then it clicked: all I had to do was insert proper take-off trim, pull the stick fully back until about 100 km/h then center it, while maintaining the centerline with rudder/brakes and let the thing just fly off the runway on its own. If you try to force the plane on two main wheels the gyroscopic effect will push you to one side if you don't catch it immediately with pedals. If you're late, then you'll drive off the runway from the other side. :)

909900, huh? Does that mean that we need to memorize specific numerical codes if we want to do anything useful with the navigation system? :)

Usually the parking spots on the ramp have had their coordinates mapped beforehand. So the pilot only needs to copy the coordinates from a list. 2nd question: From the manual it looks like that Mirage has a slot for a portable data cartridge. Those data cartridges are used to transfer the whole mission plan to the aircraft. So the pilot doesn't need to enter the waypoints manually. The data can include: waypoint coordinates, timetable, radio frequencies, troop placements, threats etc.

Not a Viggen and it's on a trailer but... :D

New PC - do I need to deactivate modules on the old one?
Retu81 replied to mx22's topic in Payment and Activation
From FAQ: "Each game license has 10 activations and 10 deactivations, some modules has more than 10, all campaigns has 3. You can activate your game up to 10 times, campaigns 3. The number of installations is unlimited! This game also allows Activations Automatically (“AAA”) technology that enables you to create a new activation once every 31 days. This function is enabled after all 10 (3) default activations have been used" https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/support/faq/564/ -
So it's officially Two Weeks™ now?

I bought a Zotac GTX 1060 6GB version without the fancy cooler. Now I'm waiting for the damn thing to arrive. Amazon's carrier lost the first delivery, the replacement should be arriving on Monday if everything goes well.

That's brilliant. :D

That's not a refueling probe. It's just a cover for the pitot tube. Why would Finns even install a refueling probe on the Mig, since we don't even have tanker aircraft? Edit: A better image of the contraption:

Hawk's seat (MB Mk.10) also uses leg restraints. They are those blue straps in the image: The pilot would pass them through the D-rings on his flight suit and attach the other end to the seat during strap-in. After post-flight inspection we tied them on the flight stick to keep them out of the way and have them easily accessible for the pilot.

There was a joke in Finnish Air Force that described Draken as "the best known way to convert jet fuel into noise" :D

Did you have flaps set to landing position?
-
Well, you have an aircraft that weighs as much as a medium sized truck, goes three times as fast during landing, but only has 2 (3 in Mig-21) wheels with brakes. That's a lot of kinetic energy that needs to be dissipated as heat through those two brakes. Things get pretty complicated. :)
