As someone who has taken real flight lessons... this is the best advice right here for DCS. The link to the videos is the best. I'd recommend starting in the Su-25T... the tail draggers in the real world are are a gas to fly, but a pain initially on the ground in a simulator and no one is going to be around to walk you though the odd stick and rudder maneuvers initially. I'd go with the Su-25T. then get some rudder time in a tail dragger if you feel so inclined.

This is a mis-characterization of the SU-27 and to Russian engineering. Which is pretty impressive and far from poor. Its a matter of attitude. Russians think from a war time perspective which states stuff will get shot out of the sky and design accordingly. Cheap where they can afford it to be and expensive where it must be and easily replaceable under war time conditions is not a poor design choice nor poor engineering.

Wags answers this question here: There answer is not likely for a long while. Actually I think the engine will need a serious re-write to accommodate a dynamic campaign. We can't get many objects in game as it is before the thing grinds to a halt. ETA: Re-write is a bit strong...

Procedures for intercepting aircraft in WWII and Korea?
aileron replied to aileron's topic in DCS: F-86F Sabre
Guys while all this information is fascinating. I'm talking about the procedure for the pilot in the cockpit. In todays world they talk AA, ATA, CATA: Aspect Angle Antenna Train Angle Collision Antenna Train Angle ATA, and CATA... wouldn't of existed for the pilots of WWII or Korea... so I'm wondering how'd they do that. Thats the procedure I want to know. How'd they gauge ?,000 feet displacement, and at what angle to make their turn, when they had to guesstimate target Airspeed, Aspect Angle, and Altitude from target. This is still a relevant task for an F-86 to get on the six of an unwary target without being too far behind or overtaking the target, or missing it all together. -
Each brings something special to the table...

What was the procedure pilots used to do an intercept outside of seat of the pants in the days before radar scopes in the cockpit? I can't seem to find any information about intercepting aircraft during the world war 2 time frame or the Korean war time period. Was wondering if anyone knows of a good document, book, or place to go online to find above info?

There were a few in our area according to this image.

Thank you so much LeCuvier! I was able to use your input and make the F-15C work the way I wanted it to. :) -
Flaming Cliffs Toggle Switches F15C

Bummer... thanks Sierra99... this is what I feared. :( -

Is it possible to make toggle switches on the Warthog Hotas Throttle work with the flaming cliffs 3 aircraft? If I go into my install folder for 1.5 and look in Mods\aircraft\Flaming Cliffs\Input\f-15c\joystick\ Tthere is no Warthog lua files. So I have nothing to edit. If I copy the default lua file and rename it to: Throttle - HOTAS Warthog.lua Then edit the file to have this entry: {down = iCommandPlaneFonar, up = iCommandPlaneFonar, down = 1, up = 0, name = _("Canopy Open/Close TOGGLE"), category = _("Systems"), }, or {down = iCommandPlaneFonar, up = iCommandPlaneFonar, value_down = 1, value_up = 0, name = _("Canopy Open/Close TOGGLE"), category = _("Systems"), }, It doesn't' work. Is it a. because you can't Or b. because I'm doing it wrong?

Just curious... I thought the F-18C didn't come with ILS. Is it older F-18's (A models) that didn't come with ILS? Or is this a military version of ILS and it doesn't work with the civilian version? This is what I thought I read in Hornets over Kuwait (i.e. Navy/Marines had own version of ILS and couldn't use civilian version.) Also if I remember the military ILS system only worked on aircraft carriers.

Parking Slots Very Restrictive For Wide Body Jets
aileron replied to Worrazen's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I would also like to point out that this is a game... even though the video includes an emergency situation. -
I think you mean this: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2851944&postcount=1 ETA: arrghhh... sithspawn you beat me to it! LOL. :P

Everyones talking the Viper and all's I want to see is a 150. Surely we can make some room for a REAL aircraft. Okay... okay okay... I want the viper too. Block 50... of course. ;)

How bout just some water so we can park an aircraft carrier off the coast. I mean the NTTR map makes it all the way out to Santa Ana, Long Beach, might as well just put the water there.

Wow those links are awesome... and yes far more clear, I know see where I got defensive... like I said before... my bad. I don't know how you can get actual flight plan logs from say Desert Storm... as interesting as that would be. But hey maybe someone has one laying around. I think the mission data card you posted above is pretty much what we need in DCS as a kneeboard. I'm requesting that it auto-generate based on what you've put in the game mission editor. All that data should be available to the games database, so it should be possible for the game engine to create them. Of course now I have to go off and check out all these tools(links) and Bogey Jammer's toy.

Sorry my bad...

I said "Waypoint" as well as NAVAIDS, and I'm not sure I follow you guys as to what the military does vs. flying airport to airport. What exactly do you think they did in WWII, Korea, or Vietnam? Do you really think a guy remembers each heading, altitude, speed and distance flown to a waypoint, then his IP and his target, then all that data back to home base? Do you also think they don't have known TACAN/VORs/NDB's (A-N in WWII) to get back to base? Don't just think modern computerized aircraft. I recommend you guys read and enjoy Richard Bach's "Stranger to the Ground." And you can enjoy a story of a fighter pilot during the cold war in an F-84F over France doing a long IFR flight. You can see his map overlay and yes his flight plan 'AF Form 21a" in the book. Also where do you think kneeboard flight plans came from? Also there is such a thing as intersections from a known NDB, VOR, TACAN as well which would be your waypoint. If time and distance are not the only way when you're above the clouds and can't find that knotty mountain top to make your turn from. Pilots with kneeboards; this one below appears to be a flight plan: And yes, I know they carry far more data than just flight plans... I know they can be electronic now but not sure they use them in fighter planes at the moment? It would be nice if a mil pilot would chime in here. ETA: I also agree a floating knee board is not great but its better than nothing. I'd prefer the pilot have it on his body in the cockpit. But I really think for an F86, MIG15, F-5, Huey, MI-8, this is a really necessary addon. Even modern jets can benifit. I don't know how many times in modern jets in other sims that shall go nameless, I've refereed to my knee board, especially when the fit hit the shan and I needed to egress the area.

When you select an aircraft and put down its waypoints a flight plan page should be filled out for you if its a client/player aircraft/helo. If you chose to fly to a VOR, NDB, RSBN, ILS, PRMG, airport, or just some waypoint it should tell you all the pertinent information. From / To / Heading, radio freq, Identifier, dist, time, etc. When you get in the plane and you hit K for knee-board (or look at virtual pilot) your flight plan should be available to you similar to the one I showed above. That way your not scrambling around looking at F10 moving around the map while holding heading and altitude or taking off your VR goggles to figure out whats the next frequency for that NAV/Comm station, whats my next heading, etc. On modern jets its not as big a problem as they can program in their way points... right up until you get shot at and lose your instruments, and have to rely on compass to get back. Then you wonder where you are and what heading gets you back home. Hence knee board flight plan.

We really, really need a navigation log in the kneeboard. Its so frustrating to try and navigate in VR without a knee-board flight plan that you can look at. This has been an area in DCS that is seriously lacking. So I'm posting this because you almost always take off in a real airplane for another airport with one and I usually fill one out if its beyond super simple for any flight sim game. Because VR makes making your own flight plans impossible on a real knee-board its really become a problem. So ED... we need a knee-board flight plan. :)
