Trying to tweak out right performance out of rift
FragBum replied to Jyge's topic in Virtual Reality
Okay this is what works for me mostly low level stuff trying to learn to fly helicopters. :) PD @ 1.1 5930 i7 @ 4.7Ghz 1080Ti @ 1.97Ghz 64GB DDR4 @ 2.4Ghz SSD Rift mostly 45FPS with ASW on NTTR, Caucasus other maps not so good. -

Interesting points on retreating blade stall It gets interesting real quick. -
Huey and landing! Where are those experts pilot with quick landing :)
FragBum replied to Frag's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Nailed it, friction. It's got skids right. :P -
@Tundra odd I find in order of GPU/CPU usage NTTR is the most efficient map. Is that 1080 an upgrade? Now I did a bit more investigating and seems I got an Oculus update around the 8th of Nov. interestingly that's about when i started getting random BSODs and DCS crashing. Which I haven't had in the last week or so. Now wondering if it's windows/Oculus function.

No not ordinarily, you would use it if say DCS ran oddly or not at all after and update. There also shouldn't be an issue simply running it manually, doing so might overwrite any 3rd party mods/data. Other then that it's a repair tool for your DCS installation but not a backup tool for your personal DCS data, logbook, your missions etc.

Trying to tweak out right performance out of rift
FragBum replied to Jyge's topic in Virtual Reality
Yes depending on settings, map and mission that's pretty much all I get with similar spec PC. ASW  nah More info here. -
Okay over the last few updates I have been noticing improvements with both Rift image quality and DCS performance and with this latest update DCS 2.5.3.24984 more so. Whilst not 45FPS to 90FPS kinda improvements initially over the last few updates I've noticed smoother game play and improved VR image and seemingly slightly lower GPU and CPU usage for a given free flight mission using Taskmanager. In an effort to keep as smooth as possible gameplay and reduce the occurrence of stutter and frame drops I previously tweaked settings so that I rarely hit 100% CPU or GPU and average 60 to 70% in NTTR map the actual usage ramps up and down through normal gameplay however having some headroom means less issues. The maps are important as different maps have different CPU/GPU requirements. Now TBH I haven't changed anything this side as far as settings go until last night where I increased AF to 4 because I can now and still have CPU/GPU headroom. I have mentioned this observation a few times however seems no one else has noticed anything as well apart from a small mention in DCS official news there has been no indication in the OB update thread either, yet my PC/DCS/Rift experience has improved. Whilst I had a quick fly after downloading 2.5.3.24984 update yesterday it was last night when I was sitting in the Mi-8 the switch labels and the interior just popped I don't recall any of the models looking this good since ver 2.3.x Or there may have been a Windows or Oculus update that I missed but I don't remember any in the last month or so.

Okay I understand but I think that's part of it. When I first got my Rift I took the Huey out and it was AMAZING! I mean I loved Avatar not for the Null Plot but the 3D imagy. Anyhow after the Huey I took the Gazelle out and well after about 10 minutes I had to land it and take a break. It will pass.

Wow how so, did you have issues with your VR.

Indeed interesting there isn't much mention about making sideways and indeed even reverse approaches in the manuals, so it's not just me. :D However the maximum amount of thrust from the tail rotor is only the amount required to maintain or change the attitude of the aircraft on that axis. After all any more or any less would result in the aircraft rotating from the main rotor torque. I would also be interested to find out but expect it would be a smallish effect after all vectored thrust from the tail rotor is still thrust. I only really think about it in terms of use the anti-torque (cyclic and collective) to position the big fan when doing so. ;) This method works for all of em :music_whistling: -
Mmm no that image really doesn't show the resolution correctly otherwise my Rift CV1 is somehow near as good as the primax 5K and I would expect better from 2.5K/eye. The vids are pixel for pixel mpeg encoded and near enough.
-
Awesome. Do have a look at Gripes323 vid that looked great I was waiting for the G effects with some of the manoeuvres. Yes the screen door effect or SDE can be an issue for some people, for me I can see it if I focus on it or effectively filter it out. There are prescription lenses available for them as well if necessary. Also keep in mind there is aliasing, moiré and other artefacts in VR again this can be controlled to an extent by settings in game again I can filter these out to an extent if it's at/below a certain level. DCS is also not as well displayed as some other VR titles however for the immersion VR offers I'm okay (for the time being) with the failings of current VR tech. I have the CV1 so it's 1080*1200 per eye It's a bit misleading when they say 2160*1200 however something to keep in mind the field of view is something like 110deg so you effectively have half of a 2K screen but it the same res wherever you look and is kinda like flying with a diving mask on. Sigh! VivePro looks okay at 1440*1600 per eye but may need to consider hardware perhaps someone with experience could chime in with details of hardware requirements. It is near double the pixels.

VR for me, I have been flying Rift for 2 years this Jan. Resolution is not that bad and comparable to my monitor comparing the VR portion displayed to the HMD image yes more will be better. Colour rendition is not as good as it could be but still acceptable my personal consideration is that the colour in Rift seems oversaturated giving images a "cartoony" appearance again first gen devices and apart from a lack of adjustment within the Rift software it's not a deal breaker. A wider field of vision will be better and I'm guessing 2nd maybe 3rd gen devices will bring wider FoV and higher resolution, just duno if that also means FTW4080Ti and i12 CPU's will be needed and associated mortgage on the house to pay for it. :P Immersion and depth perception especially for helicopters and low level work it's a complete game changer for me, I doubt I could go back to a flat screen indeed I tried that once and it's no longer a option it's simply just flat. As for comments re at my age and so forth I'm 60 I wear glasses for reading, driving etc but with rift it's perfectly clear and in focus without them which for me is amazing. so you other ole farts might want to give it a go. :D  As for your rig DCS and VR craves GPU and CPU power not saying it wont work it's just you will probably feel the urge to upgrade, just saying. :music_whistling: I have never used TiR so can'y really comment apart from there would be a disconnect for me with head movement verses scene movement not being 1 to 1 however I would expect you'd get used to it. Okay a short video of course you won't get the stereoscopic effect and depth perception but the image is about the same on screen as it is in VR

If you use autostart do you have the same issue. You need to work out why the "alarm" light is on maybe revise your startup procedure.
-
Interesting with similar spec machine I couldn't really run PD @ 1.3 and MSAA @ 4. TBH and it's a personal preference however for me PD @ 1.2 or even 1.1 and MSAA @4 looks and flows better in VR. I also run the settings mostly on high except shadows low/flat and attempt to keep either CPU and or GPU from hitting 100%.
-
Well that doesn't seem correct, Rift colour might seem a little cartoony compared to my monitor but it's acceptable and kinda close enough. Maybe first base clean the lenses of your HMD with purposed lens cleaning wipes. Go through the vendor setup procedure. Check your graphics settings don't also adversely effect display in the HMD.

Maybe try to adjust gamma when there is no canopy to look through some canopies can have high glare. I find a gamma of about 1.8 to be pretty good.for my Rift. Some of the DCS models have seemingly different glare effects as well.

Okay the manuals are a good place to start FAA PDF Also this one Not free Principles of Helicopter Flight W.J. Wagtendonk (An IP recommended this one) Huey Manual Oh and this one has some great info There are more of course.:D then for some gritty reading Chickenhawk Robert Mason Shockwave Peter Haran This one has been recommended so I ordered it. To The Limit by Tom A Johnson Welcome to the dark side.

What DCS Modules are needed for a Server?

Yes agree. -
I know I just love how they fly. :D

There's always the thought police, right. Get over it .:music_whistling:

Sure but which one are you likely to actually fly. I know which one(s) I have flown.
